I find it very hard to feel sorry for someone who gets killed at work when their vocation is playing with, what is essentialy, a giant fish.

Still, if the beasty gets put down who fancies a Tandori whale bhuna? It would be a shame to see it go to waste.

Hello, I kill great white sharks as a pastime, simply to eat their livers with some alfalfa beans and a nice chianti. I am also highly intelligent. I usually eat mammals though, you know, ones about the same size or bigger than you...

Wanna swim with me and get me to play fetch for you?!?

These animals can just get a wee bit cranky or just play a bit too enthusiastic and the result is death. 26 people die in the US due to dog bites each year. If you keep a 26 ft, 6 ton dog in a cage measuring about 8 times it's length, then it's going to become agitated.

People should really stop using the apex predator of the oceans as a circus clown.

It's a bit astonishing that Hercule Poirot could miss the clues in these murders.

Evidently the whale in question was 'involved' with four other deaths. Oops.

Killer whale kills trainer in America. A spokesman at Sea World said, "It's a tragedy, but I don't think he did it on porpoise."

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

He was always so good natured. We gave him fish and kept him in a tiny pool. We can't figure out why he got upset that he couldn't go hunt things and ate another trainer. It must be a phase. He should grow out of it shortly.

"Blamed for another death".
Whales can't commit murder.

And I do find it interesting how this happened, despite all this "Hurrr he's a KILLER WHALE GUYZ!" talk. Orcas are pretty domesticated as it is, and there was an interesting case a year or two back where a pod of Orcas were shadowing a boat and ganked a Great White that was getting too close to it.

Because maybe, you know, they were hungry? Or felt the shark threatened their young? Or wanted to play a match of waterball with the sharks head?

And what do you mean by saying whales can't commit murder? Just look into those big, soulful eyes and tell me you can't see the psycho inside.

See, that's what the whale researchers who saw the attack originally thought.

But they'd just seen those specific Orcas feeding off seals earlier, and the fact that after ripping the Great White apart--they just left everything for the seagulls.
And the youngest Orca in that specific pod was still larger than the Great White.

It's just an interesting incident, because Orcas and Great Whites stay away from each other for the most part.

No. it's since been shown that orcas specifically hunt great whites.

The reason they leave so much is that they just kill them for their livers.

http://www.tvthrong.co.uk/nature-shock/nature-shock-series-premiere-whale-ate-great-white

It's also been shown that when a great white dies, it releases chemicals into the water that cause all the other great whites to flee the area for hundreds of miles. So when the orcas show up, the great whites flee in terror.

Weird, because that's completely contrary to what National Geographic was saying.

Interesting though.

It's all very recent research. I imagine usually the great white and orca do avoid each other, principally because great whites are moving off as soon as they become aware of orcas nearby.

They should release it into the wild so it can feed on some swimmers instead of their trainers. Much more cost effective. That or we could let the PETA people swim with it. It would be freakin hilarious if one of them got eaten.

Sigh...my condolonces to her family and all that, but seriously-these things are carnivores. They kill and eat things. Putting it in a tank and making it swim around and jump at your command is not going to end well for anyone. What really got me was when one of the eyewitnesses said "It was like they didn't want to perform thier act today.". Oh please, Like it really wants to dance for thier entertainment.
As for why it did it, I find the bit where it mentioned her ponytail wafting in front of it a big, obvious clue. My theory is that the Whale was perhaps tired or delirious and felt threatened, causing it too (quite rightly) defend itself against what it saw as a threat.

I read through the google news article, and the trainers never get in the water with that specific whale since he is territorial and is not used to people in his tank . . . and they are KEEPING the whale, he makes sea world too much money to be shot or released(he's sea world's orca stud)
