in the black templars codex, the predator entries state that the tank may be armed with two side sponsons with either heavy bolters at number-points or lascannons at number-points. Does this mean that I pay the points cost listed once for two sponsons, or do I have to pay twice if I want my tank to not be silly and lopsided.

If you expanded out the wording it would read:

"The [Predator] may also be armed with two side sponsons with heavy bolters at +x points"

and

"The [Predator] may also be armed with two side sponsons with lascannons at +y points"

Hopefully this will help you to understand WHY you get both sponsons for the points cost listed.

Thats how I assumed it worked, just wanted to be 100% positive, thanks a lot.

Remember as well they are two separate weapons, so you need two Damaged - Weapon Destroyed results to get rid of them.
