I decided to break out my sisters of battle for a game to take a bit of a break from my daemons. My list isn't anything spectacular or divergent a fairly standard mech sisters list.

Mission: Annihilation
Deployment: Dawn of War

The sisters come in at 18kp the space wolves come in at 19kp.

The wolves lose the roll off and have to go first they start with nothing on the table, but declare that the long fangs will walk onto the table and not use their drop pod. The sister's decide to keep everything off table until their turn #1.

Turn #1: Space Wolves.
So the long fangs come on the table and take up positions in a couple of area terrain pieces. Now is the tough choice. He's going to have to castle with his pods coming in. Does he castle close to my board edge or does he hang back. Hanging back gives me mostly free reign with the pods so he chooses to castle in my deployment zone. His initial drop is 2 empty pods, both dreadnaughts, and 1 squad of grey hunters (the ones with the flamer). In come the pods, nothing hits, they all scatter a bit but are mostly in place. Everything runs and get's ready for the rumble

Space Wolves Drop Pod Assault!

Long Fangs a walking

Turn #1 Sisters
I decide to take the bait and bring on everything in that half of the table. I dismount 1 celestian squad that melta's the closer of the dreadnaughts. I also dismount 2 battle sister squads and use them and the immolators to get the space wolf squad down to one model (the flamer). And I destroy 2 pods with melta fire and exorcist shots.

Sisters after their Turn #1

Turn #2: Space Wolves
Four reserve rolls later and the space wolves get absolutely nothing in this turn. The lone grey hunter charges the celestians and they club him down with their bolters. The dread moves up with multi-melta range and proceeds to roll a one. Long Fang squad #1 shoots 3 missile's at rhino's and does nothing. Long fang squad #2 shoots 2 lascannons and 3 missiles at rhino's and manages to immobilize one of them.
SW KP: 0 SOB KP: 4

No need for pictures here. Ouch no resereves hurts!

Turn #2 Sisters
The other dread get's melta'd. And I blow up 2 more drop pods. Everything re-mounts except for the celestian squad which went after the dreadnaught.

Sisters after their Turn #2

Turn #3 Space Wolves
To make up for the last turn everything drops this round. You can't see the forrest for the drop pods, they are everywhere. I would like to note again, that not a single pod actually landed on target they scattered all over the place. The rune priest living lightnings one of the exorcists in the side, ripping the gun off of it. 3 combi-melta shots from the wolf guard blow up one exorcist, 2 double ones from the grey hunter squad sees the last exorcist live! Shooting from the 2 long fang squads succeeds in immobilizing another rhino. The last squad blows up the cannoness's ride.

Space Wolves after their Turn #3

Turn #3 Sister's
My little celestian squad caps the rune priest in the head with a melta gun shot. (He separated the rune-priest out to get the shot on the side of the exorcist, and be able to melta another exorcist). Exorcist, cannoness unload into the wolf guard killing all but 2 of the terminators. Immolator's and a sister's squad kill off all but one from another grey hunter pack (he failed 7 out of 10 3+ saves). And another grey hunter pack is reduced to 2 model's. I shoot up one of the long fangs and get it down to one model and blow up another drop pod. The canoness and celestians charge the 2 terminators killing one and the other breaks and runs.
SW KP: 3 SOB KP: 8

Sister's after their Turn #3

The sister's surround the space wolves and prepare to teach the puppies a lesson!

Pictures were stopped at this time to protect the innocent!

Turn #4 Space Wolves
The 2 squad remnants (3 total model's) charge a sisters squad, they take a casualty and lock them in hth. The last remaining large squad charges and kills off the celestian squad. Long fangs blow up a rhino! The one large pack of grey hunter's that's left charges the celestian squad and kills them.
SW KP: 5 SOB KP: 8

Turn #4 Sister's
The exorcist and canoness squad lights up the last squad of grey hunter's killing about 4-5 of them. Then charge's into combat. I gun down the last long fang from one of the squads and pop another drop pod. I pile more sister's into the 3 grey hunter's and kill off the lone man, but the other two survive.
SW KP: 5 SOB KP: 11

Turn #5 Space Wolves
His rallied wolf guard terminator charges into the canoness's squad. Both hand to hands are locked as he slowly whittle's away at the sister's. His last long fang squad shoots into the siser's in the crater of their rhino and they loose one.
SW KP: 5 SOB KP: 11

Turn #5 Sister's
I kill off the wolf guard and the other squad with the canoness and pop another drop pod.
SW KP: 5 SOB KP: 14

Aftermath: Well once we rolled up the mission deployment and to see who went first the wolves were really going to be on their back feet . Not getting any reserves in on turn 2 and the lackluster performance of his anti-tank weaponry in the early stages of the game really hurt him. I had about average dice roll's but his were so far below par that it wasn't funny. Drop pods are like candy for exorcist's and melta gun's! The canoness with retinue is about as annoying as thunderhammer terminator's, they just don't kill as much.

Wow. You're right his luck sucked. But you just destroyed him.

Full Drop Pod in DoW with Turn 1 is rough. I might even have castled away from you, if I was him. There's just no way that you're going to live after a drop in front of that many flamers, meltas, bolters, etc at point blank range.

Good job.

I agree. I think your opponent will try something else, while dice clearly played a hand (they always do) I don't think podding that close to sisters is how you beat them. You just can't give SoB that many double/tap Faith Storm opportunities.

I think setting up mid board would have been what he needed and pushed the pace from there.

Interesting report. I think the big lesson learned is why KP missions can be nasty. It almost appears that GW may have known something about all mech armies could be ugly, but through out KP to help mitigate that. Killing Drop Pods quickly put you in the lead which made for a relatively easy game.

Thanks for posting with the pics as well. It's always a treat to see other armies/game tables that get used.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.
