So in my quest to decide on a chapter for my future SM force, I painted up a Black Reach termie that Les from www.awesomepaintjob.com gave me to post as reference for commission work. I have never done yellow besides highlights on fire, so it was very new to me. If I could redo it I would skip my GW sunset yellow layers as the paint was gritty.

The layering was as follows:
Prime white
Base color with Iyanden Darksun
wash with a custom insanely soft body sepia(about 5 drops of ink in 1/2oz. of medium solution from our website)
Highlight with GW sunset yellow(was a very important step, but the paint was gritty, I need to replace it)
Higlight with Apple Barrel 20502 Yellow( it's like $1 from wal mart, bought em to find a good yellow with decent coverage, works very well in thin layers)
hard line highlight with Apple Barrel 20219 Banana(almost neon yellow when compared to sunset yellow or the 20502 yellow).

All in all I think it looks decent. The shins and shoulder likely need a few more layers of AB yellow to smooth out the base color. From tabletop distance it looks damn good. C&C please, and keep in mind it is not at all finished.

Really? I mean I know yellow is hard to work with. Perhaps I'm too harsh a critic on myself. I think it looks good at 18", it looks ok up close. I may try it out on a AOBR missile marine and if I like it then I'll choose it as my chapter. I'll need to find a good match for my airbrush though, as I'm not hand painting yellow vehicles!

Hey man. It's yellow. The fact that you covered the model is an achievment itself.And I like how you highlighte it. I hate it when gw highlights yellow with white.

GW did almost all highlights to white back in 5th edition or earlier. It was always annoying to see blue higlight to white, and then have Blood Red for every detail. Who thought that Blood red horns and toenails on trolls or dragons looked convincing?

Again though, I need to do one or two more layers on the shins and shoulders to get full coverage, it just didn't show up much in the pics.

That is a great Yellow I must say.
I think that is a perfect GW fist color.
Mine are more of an Industrial Yellow.
You need to add some heraldry to the shield but I look forward to more of these.

That yellow is fantastic. So fantastic however, that it needs some more cool colors on the mini to dull it's awesomeness, lest it blind the unwary viewer.

I'll do finishing touches and details tonight. Not sure if I want to do decals or try out some freehand. Also not sure how heavily to weather it. Might just do some dirt around the feet.
