I played in a 1750 pt, 40k tournament yesterday. It was one of 4 tournament qualifiers to make it to the KC Invitational. I couldn’t decide what to bring, so about 4 hours before the event, I made up an Eldar list and decided to wing it. I have never had much luck with my Eldar and I don’t get to play regularly anymore due to work and drive time. I had been reading some Eldar tactics on GW and dakkadakka. Needless to say, my strategy paid off and I took 1st overall. Anyways, on with the list and brief reports
My Eldar:
Eldrad
5 Fire Dragons w/ Serpent- TL Shuricannon, Shuricannon, Star Engines, Vectored Engines, Stones
6 Scorpions w/ Exarch- infiltrate, move through cover, chainsabres
2x10 Dire Avengers w/ Exarch- PW/Shimmershield, Defend- Wave Serpent w/ TL Bright Lance, Shuricannon
3 Guardian Jetbikes w/ Shuricannon and Warlock with Spear/Destructor
10 Guardian Defenders w/ Bright Lance and Warlock with Conceal, Spear, Spirit Seer

Marbo
10 vets w/ 3 meltas in Vendetta
10 vets w/ 3 meltas in Chimaera
10 vets w/ 3 plasma and lascannon in Chimaera
Platoon Command w/ Lascannon and vox in Chimaera
Squad 1- Lascannon
Squad 2- Melta in Valkyrie
Hydra
Executioner
Mission: Dawn of War deployment, Old style Victory Points
--bonus +100 victory points per intact troop in their deployment, +50 for below half strength troop in their deployment
--night fight all game, unless a 4+ is rolled at the end of the turn
He won first turn so I left everything off the board except Scorpions. I came in turn 2 and was unable to shoot anything for 2 rounds with night fight. My Scorpions had infiltrated in the center of the board and were able to absorb his whole first turn of shooting after a spotlight lit them up. Scorpions were able to charge his lascannon team and then his Company Command on turn 2. Once night fight went off, I was able to shoot down the Vendetta, immobilize the executioner, destroy 2 chimaeras and immobilize the other. All of his squads were destroyed except the one in the Valkyrie. Not much really went on the whole game. We only made it to turn 3. I was able to get a minor win. Barely missed the major.
Game 2 (Table 2)vs Guard
Company Command w/ Creed in Chimaera
Platoon command w/ vox
--3x Squads w/ Melta gun
Platoon command w/ vox
--2x Squads w/ nothing
--2x3 lascannon teams
Executioner
2 Leman Russes w/ plasma cannons
Mission- 4 objectives in center of each quarter
---Major- hold all 4 objectives and kill more enemy troops
---Minor- hold more objectives or kill more enemy troops
--bonus- +1 for each model killed
----can’t remember the rest
I won the roll to go first and forced him into a bottle neck between a volcano and large pillar. I redeployed with divination and scouted the war walkers. Everything was set up for 1st turn destruction. He seized the initiative and killed my War walkers, immobilized a Dire Avenger Serpent, and killed all but 1 Scorpion. I zoomed my fire dragons toward the middle of the bottle neck in his deployment. After shooting, he had a destroyed leman russ and an immobile, stunned executioner. Using my star engines, I moved in the shooting and completely blocked off his whole army due to the positioning of his immobile executioner. He failed to take down the serpent or kill anything else. From there on, Eldrad single handedly (love fortune, doom, storm) destroyed all of his infantry and the dragons destroyed the executioner and some weapons teams. I ended up holding 3 objectives (eldrad was by himself on another) and I earned over 100 bonus points. He killed 3 Warwalkers, 5 scorpions, and a fire dragon….i killed 1 fire dragon in an explosion. If I wasn’t stupid with my bikes, I would have had all 4 objectives and a major.
Game 3 (Table 1) vs Nids
Mission- Get more units in the opponents deployment zone
--major, double the points as the opponent
--minor—more points than the opponent
--Hq-4points, Troops-3, Elite, Fast,Heavy-2, Transports-1
--Bonus +1 for each unit in enemies deployment, +10 for not holding anything in reserves, +5 for every 10 models killed, +15 if all your transports are intact at games end
Nids:
Winged Tyrant w/ poison and talons
3 zoanthropes
2 Trygons w/ poison and talons
2x6 Warriors w/ boneswords, talons, poison
2x 24 Guants w/ talons, leap
He won the roll to go first and gave it to me…..I was elated, but he was for sure he would seize…My plan was to over deploy on one side and hopefully roll well on divination and move several units to focus on one flank. I putt my 3 tanks on the left, then guardians in the middle of the board, and on the right I had the warwalkers, bikes, wraithlord, Eldrad for Guide support. He put a Trygon and Zoan on each flank backed by a warrior squad. The middle was held by the Tyrant and Zoan. Guants filled the gaps in between. He had deployed more towards his left, where there was a wall blocking about a foot of the board edge. I infiltrated the Scorpions on the board edge on the far right (he ignored the whole game and let them walk into his deployment for easy points). I used divination and rolled a 5 (yay)…I moved the war walkers to the far left, bikes and eldrad behind, and the wraithlord b/t the warwalkers and tanks. With first turn, I moved 6 inches forward and unloaded everything on the left Zoan and Trygon. Guided WarWalkers took down the Trygon, the Zoan went down to 1 Dire Avenger Serpent, and then I took 2 ½ warriors out.
Nids 1- He surged forward. Everything ran or fleeted. Hive tyrant flew into the center in front of my Guardians.
Eldar-2- I guide the Warwalkers and bikes again and shuffle them left with the wraithlord. The transports move six and unload the avengers in front of the left guants and the fire dragons unload in front of the Tyrant. Shooting on the left kills all but 2 of the warriors and all but 4 guants ( I failed to doom them by ½ an inch). I put a wound on the Zoanthrope in the center with a brightlance. Firedragons and the guardians take out the tyrant.
Nids 2- His 4 guants move and charge my bikes. Trygon from his left somehow makes it into combat with my right dire avengers. 2 Warriors assault my left Avengers, kill 3, and they fail morale. I was able to run away, but only went 2 inches. The Trygon kills 3 and my Exarch wounds him. I stay.
Eldar 3- I wipe his last 2 warriors on the left. On the right, my guardians instakilled his right Zoanthrope. My Dire Avengers fled again, but only 3 inches. I failed all shooting at the middle zoanthrope and then assault him with my fire dragons (who remain in combat until the end of the game). Eldrad assaulted the guants fighting the bikes and wiped them.
Nid 3- His left guants assault my Avengers locked in with the Trygon. They wipe out the Avengers. His left Warriors assault my Guardians and wipe them. (He was happy to wipe them out, I was happy for him because my shooting phase was next). Zoan and dragons play checkers.
Eldar 4- I guide the Warwalkers, Bikes, and Doom the Trygon. Avengers flee an amazing 4 (that’s 7 inches in on 6 D6). Trygon is dropped to 1 wound left by the warwalkers. Gaunts are dropped to 3 left. Warriors lose 2, leaving 3 full and 1 with 2 wounds. Eldrad Assaults the Trygon and kills him. Zoan and dragons play uno.
Nids 4- He assaults the Falling back Avengers who rally to face the Warriors. Guants move to my deployment. He wipes my Avengers (again very happy, but my shooting is next) and then consolidates into my deployment. He then says, good game, that was tough. I asked him what he was talking about, we have time left (10 minutes) and all I have to do his kill 3 guants, turbo into your deployment and I win? He agrued for 5 minutes that he wouldn’t have enough time to get his turn (3 guants and 4 warriors who are trying to hide in the openness of my deployment to gain 8 points). Finally he agreed to go another turn.
Eldar 5- I zoomed a serpent into his deployment, moved the warwalkers in as well. Then the wraithlord scatter laser shot and killed the 3 guants. Bikes and other serpent kill a warrior and wound another. I now have 5 points to his 4.
Nid 5- He then moves his warriors backword behind rubble. Whole turn in under 3 minutes. I get a minor win with 48 bonus to his 31 and went 3-0…..but 3-0 does not win the tournament, only victory conditions matter.
My last opponent had 2 major wins for 800 pts each and a minor loss for 350 points= 1950. I had 3 minor wins for 650=1950. After bonus points are tallied, I win (1124) by 40 bonus points and he gets second (1084) by 3 points (3rd had 1081).
Not bad for 4 months without a game…..over a year since I played Eldar. 1st place gave $75 worth of loot and a qualification for the 12 man invitational.
