Subject: More Tanks for the IG

I keep reading in the fluff and everywhere that the IG are really known for their tanks but in reality they don't have much more variety then other armies. So in an effort to address this but not tip the balance of the game I am "borrowing" from the Hellhound idea of a weapons platform and the almost exausted WWII era to bring you.
Centaur Tank Destoyer:
Fast Attack
Points: 110 or 1/2 the cost of the current cost of the Lemun Russ which ever fits better
Crew: 4
Front: 11 Side: 11 Rear: 10 BS: 3
Weapons: Main Gun Twin-Linked Lascannon
Front Hull Sponsoon mounted Heavy-Bolter.
Options: The Main Gun maybe exchanged for one of the following
- Twin Linked Autocannon for the cost of +10 points
- Battle Cannon for the cost of +60 points. If this option is choosen then the Tank Destroyer counts as a Heavy Support instead of a Fast Attack.
The Sponsoon mounted weapon may be exchanged for one of the following:
- Lascannon for the cost of +30 points
- Heavy Flamer for the cost of +20 points
Smoke Launchers for the cost of +10 points
Special Rules:
- Fixed Turret: Tank Destoryers are built for their relative low cost and high effectivness, for this reason they are not built with a turret. The Tank Destroyer may only adjust the firing arc of its main gun in the moving phase. It may not adjust the firing arc of the main gun if it is immobilised. This does not effect the sponsoon mounted weapon.
I'm trying to make this powered so as not to shift the balance of the game, but have I priced this out right? Is this a tank anyone would be willing to take on the field? This is supposed to be based on the Chimera hull like the Hellhound is, but I took out the turret so that I could justify the low cost, and add a little historical flare to an under appreciated piece of military hardware. Also is Centaur taken? Please suggest more weapon options.

Unnecessary, but it seems about right(and Centaur is taken by a Krieg variant APC). Read the Imperial Armour books to get a more in-depth look at Guard armored vehicles. They could only add in so many into the main Guard codex.
On the rules side:
You've essentially recreated an underpowered version of http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/destroyer.htm and then added unnecessary weapon options. that are kinda silly for what you're trying to do(Chimeras don't have sponsons and why would you take a Tank Destroyer then change the TL Lascannons to Autocannons?).

I like it, but the options seem wierd, and the price is way to stiff. AV11/11/10 with BS 3 = about 30pts, then you add the twin lascannon and the heavy bolter and should end at somewhere around 50-60pts IMO.
The options:
- twin autocannon is a downgrade from the twin las, so it should be free, or you could start it out with twin autocannon, lower price, and then somewhere around 15pts to upgrade to las
- BC for 60pts, IMO again a bit too expensive, taking a HS slot is also maybe a bit too harsh. Maybe just +50 pts for a BC. Makes it a cheapish BC with low surviability that comes from FA
Sponsons:
- Lascannon upgrade seems weird from a fluff view. A tank destroyer should have one main gun, and then an extra gun to handle attacking infantry. An extra lascan would be nice from a game POV, but not from fluff IMO
- heavy flamer upgrade is free for everything else. IMO, it should be +5 pts for everything, so +5 for HF
Smoke launchers - again, 5pts
You don't have to specify that it can't pivot etc. It is enough to say that the main weapon is hull-mounted
It should have option for camo-netting (20pts)
I also think that it would be cooler without the second hull-weapon, and with a pintle-mounted heavy stubber instead. With base twin autocannon + heavy stubber, it could probably start at ca 45pts

Wow, so I was way off on the points. I saw the Imperial Armor stuff on Forge World and a lot of it looked cool. That's probably what sparked this idea. I wanted a fast attack choice though that's why I did the weak version of the tank.

Seriously, get the books. It includes scout tanks, heavy tanks, and everything in between. They include a decent amount of fluff per tank, and are mostly very WWI/II based.

The 'weak' version of what you're wanting to do, as it stands, is the new Tauros Venator with twin-linked Lascannons.

There is already the tank that has the LASER tank destroyer which is essentially a hull mounted Railgun. It shows up in Appoc games and all T'au players cry foul.

But how many people have mantas?
think about it.
A 5 year old could probably count that high.
Forge World special makes mantas when you order one. they don't carry stock.

Unless you lower the point cost there is no reason this tank would ever be viable. At 110 points its only 20 points less than a Vendetta which gets 2 more tl lascannons, has more armor, it can carry troops, and outflank. If you spend 60 points to give it a battle cannon then it costs 20 more points than a 14/13/10 Leman Russ Battle Tank AND has a crappy arch unlike the LRBT. Make the tank far less points, around....maybe..... 40ish? Even then your getting into Sentinal territory so good luck on this one.

Why would ACs cost more than LCs? Why would a Battle Cannon make it cost much more than a Leman Russ, and have less armor? Just curious about what your train of thought was when making this. I like the idea though, a light tank for the IG could be cool.

The IG have MORE than enough variety what they have are a lot of redundant systems
From the IG codex alone
Light scout/AT - Sentinel variants
Mobile/Light AT - Devil Dog
Mobile AT/ Infantry suppression - Vendetta/Valkyrie - Chimera with ML (don't forget the vets!)
APC - Chimera, Valkyrie, Vendetta,
Enough LRBT variants to cover AT and anti infantry roles.
Enough Basilisk/Chimera platform variants to cover the same as well.
The Hydra performs Light AT well, slap some TL lascannon options and rules together and there is your 'light' anti tank tank. maybe try a TL Lascannon or AC turret on a chimera. One per army as a dedicated specialised option?

Yes the guard don't need more tanks.
There used to be 2 Lemun Russ types, now there is what 10?
The guard can take 15 different tanks to a battle and not have a single one be alike.
A new tank varity is always good, but it MUST do somthing no other tank does OR do it better or the tank is pointless
