Ok, so, my good friend is playing in a tournament sometime in the next few months and he, like myself, is fairly fresh to playing 40k. He plans on playing Tau and wanted to try his list out on both my IG army and coincidentally my bro's old Demonhunters army just to see how well his list stands up against differing armies. I've been reading through the DH's 4th ed codex and got to the part about taking allies. So the problem at hand: do I use my 4th ed IG codex or my 5th when determining the points, types (Vets, Penal, etc.), and rules on squads/transports? For instance I believe the cost of a 4th ed. chimera is 70pts, while its 55pts for the 5th ed. Suggestions?

As far as I remember you would use the most up to date codex available.

Since when the new codex comes out the old codex is obsolete.

technically, the DH codex is 3rd edition (similar to necrons, WH, and DE). you would use the DH codex (they've only ever had one) and the most current IG book (5th edition) for any allied IG you include. the new DH and IG faqs on the GW website deal with what units you can induct from the new codex. although it's a mess and you may have two different rules for the same thing, you're supposed to technically use the rules from the codex the unit is in. so you could DH allies in a base IG army and have two totally different stormtrooper squads with completely different hellguns and rules.

To be picky, IG Storm Troopers don't have "Hellguns"
