Have a question. I got the Space Wolves pack and started painting right away. Edge highlighting proved too time-consuming and so I cheaped out and used drybrushing for the armor. To me they look like total sh*t but edge highlighting doesn't work for me either. Do they look as bad as I think they do, or am I just expecting too much of myself? BTW they are quite WIP. Really just looking for an opinion on the armor right now.

Please let me know what you think, I am a perfectionist in a way so maybe I'm just over-critical of myself. Maybe rate it on a x/10 scale.

Personally, I like it. It's highlighted, but the drybrushing makes the armour look a little dirty.

It's also simple to do. At the moment, I'm loving them, can't wait to see them finished.

9/10 (the lost mark is from making me wait to see them finished )

Thanks. Although I'm not really aiming for the "simple" approach so much as the great-looking approach. Comparing these to my Guard, I just keep telling myself how bad they look...I guess I'm just being overcritical. I never knew how hard a stupid Space Wolf could be to paint.

Some closer up pictures would really be appreciated. I can't see much from that distance.

1. You didn't clean the flash and sprue points up on the models. That dosn't help with the end finish
2. drybrushing armour will not look very nice no matter what. It's a mass production technique

If you want to do the army quickly then you need to drybrush more and use the GW washes to mute the effect.
Base dark grey
Drybrush mid grey
Drybrush lighter grey but only on the tops of the armour plates
Wash with Delvan mud or badab black but doa controlled was. You don't want to slop it on like you're dipping. You paint it on like you're painting the figure. start at the ligher areas and brush into the darked area's and it'll work better

Gave up completely on drybrushing. I went for edge highlighting as well as a lighter finish and here's the result, mostly finished:

That looks a lot better. I used the technique in the space wolf white dwarf and the end result looks good. If you try it, make sure you only apply the 1:1 Fenris grey:scorched brown wash into the recesses not the whole model. It will also be a good idea to mix up a pot of 1:1 Shadow and space wolves grey.

The edge highlighting is a far better painted model, even without a close-up compared to the drybrushed techniques. Even then however, drybrushing can look good if you do it right, particularly in the manner themurphyfella advised.

It still looks alright, and as long as you dont skimp out on detail work like the metals, the furs, the faces, eye-lenses and so on, the overall look of the Wolves will be much improved. At the least, wait til you've wholly finished a model before you make a judgement on whether or not drubrushing is for you
