I'm modeling IG veterans now.
They will going to be in chimera.
I realized veterans can have shotguns for free.
Is there any good taking shotoguns for mech veterans?

I'm still a bit of a noob but the way I look at it is:

Shotgun=same as a lasgun... just shorter range.

Chances are if you're using anything like a meltagun you'll be disembarking up close anyway.

Plus shotguns are assault weapons so you can throw some melta bombs on your squad and assault after shooting?

The answer is...drumroll please...it doesn't matter.

We can pretend being an assault weapon or a slightly better range will matter, but at the end of the day it's still a lasgun statline. A few shots plus or minus is about as meaningful extra match on a bonfire. Model whatever looks better.

i made 3 squads of Shotgun Vets, to go with some Melta gunners. the shotgun and Melta are both assault weapons allowing them to charge (Tau, or to deny the extra +1 an enemy unit might gain!). i agree that they are so similar to the lasgun, it doesn't really matter. i think the shotgun kinda gives them more of a "veteran" look.

Really, really depends on what you want to do with them.

If they have all melta's or flamers, take the shotguns. Otherwise, the lasguns.

If you take a fist, shotguns. If you take a heavy weapon with the squad, lasguns.

This is also subject to your playing style, so test them out and see what you like more.

Shotguns aren't the same. They're assault. So, depends on who you're playing. If you plan to assault infantry with them, then Shotguns are better. I admit, this isn't likely, but if you often play Tau or something else with weak CC, or are fond of tooling up your Vet Sgt with powerfists and whatnot, then shotguns are great.

But, contrary to above, if you're planning on giving them meltabombs, then it doesn't make any difference. You have to shoot and assault the same unit, and anything you're planning on meltabombing is going to be immune to shotguns OR lasguns....

and You can't assault if you shoot with Rapid fire weapon (lasguns).
but they are similar in that they are both Strength 3. that's what i ment earlier.
