A few search light questions I've had, and they basically wonder about the connection between search lights and shooting.

Could a Rhino that has suffered 3 - Weapon Destroyed, and has no weapons, attempt to use it's searchlight?
If so, could said Rhino then pop smoke?

Or for a different tact - What if instead of suffering a 3 - Weapon Destroyed, the Rhino suffered a 1 - Can't Shoot effect. Can it still use it's searchlight?
If so, could it then pop smoke?

Or, what about a Rhino that has suffered no damage. Can it attempt to use it's searchlight on a target that is greater than 24 inches away, and thus out of the SB range?
And if so, could it pop smoke?

No, because a Searchlight "triggers" when you shoot at an enemy unit and make a Night Fight Check. If you have no Guns, you can't shoot, so the Searchlight never "triggers".

No. Smoke Launchers are used in the Movement phase.

See above. If you can't shoot, for whatever reason, the Searchlights never trigger.

It can attempt to fire at any unit it wishes. It has to then take a Night Fight Check. If it passes, then the Target is Illuminated, even if the Bolters are out of range.

And as before, no, Smokes are used in the Movement Phase, not the Shooting Phase.

Note: The above is based off the Searchlight Rules found in Codex: Spess Mahrines, Codex: Spess Puppehs and Codex: CREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!, and may or may not apply to older codexes, which I do not have time at this moment to check.

Thanks for the quick reply Gwar. I thought there was some caveat like that.

Even though Gwar is "technically" right, you should always use the "I don't want to be a duche" rule before any others, meaning, let the guy use his search light.

At least let him roll to see if the bulb busted by losing 3 weapons.

The thing is, telling me "You are a douche for not letting me use the Searchlight despite the rules be ing remarkably clear on the matter as to why I cannot use them", while I say "This is what the rules say" makes you the Douche, not me.

That was rather unnecessary.

Allowing someone to use a searchlight when not actually shooting is fine as a house rule if you and your opponent want to play that way, but isn't how the rules say it works. Expecting to play it by the rules isn't automatically being unreasonable.
