I play souldrinkers, and I use the space wolves codex, I think its perfect for them.
They all have good close quarters abilities (Pistol and CCW standard with counter assault), Najal Is a perfect representation of Sarpedon, basic squads can't have heavy weapons, but can have an extra melta, flamer of plasma.
I am not sure how far you have gotten in the book so I wont mention to many more reasons to use space wolves but trust me it's perfect, even mark of the wolfen is a useful representation....

I think normal SMs because they don't use chaos weapons or deamons so much of the CSM codex would be gone. They also probably still have the new gear that the CSM don't.
Another option ( I know that lots of people won't like it me saying this) is that you could use the SW codex. SW and Soul Drinkers are both focused on short range shooting and combat so they could use the same rules.

So why wouldn't anyone like suggesting SW? Do people get around you get angry if you don't conform to GWs stupid color schemes, Whats the real difference between purple marines and grey ones? Anyone that would complain about something like that is childish, and most likely will be TFG in a game, so its best to avoid them.
*edit* Oh! For the record I do play My Souldrinkers as spacewolves and I have never had a single negative comment.

Space Wolves Codex is viewed as OTT from most.
But good luck with the army. I found them to be an unfluffy peice of history, though I also rather disliked the series so to each his own. Just remember to fill them with various mutations if you want a good style of the SD marines.

Way to go ruining the story line for the OP. You should edit in a spoiler tag before he reads it.
Also have you read the complete series? Hence the reason mark of the wolfen makes sense.

Legendary Master of the Chapter

I know someone who has made every single soul drinker and his painting WoW's me. Soul Drinkers need some love though as it seems that very few books are written about them except the ones they have. They should expand on all the chapters. For Instance IRON HANDS or the Imperial Fists. Not much is known about these main chapters. apart from Index Astrates.
I would love to see another soul drinker player : D.

He said he'd been reading the omnibus, which I was fairly certain meant he'd gotten through enough to know the fluff before deciding to dive in. This would also be assumed thanks to him asking about using the Chaos Codex.
That aside, the basic fluff behind the SD says this, so it's not much of a spoiler.

i've gotten to the point where there fighting on the nurgle daemon prince planet, and there all getting there asses wooped. But otherwise its a very interesting read. I am considering playing them as space wolves, however i should probably finish (and for that matter, start) my dark eldar, since even the best players at my FLGS cant seem to beat proxied raider spam
more to the point tho i will take a look at the space wolves codex since I didnt really bother when it first came out. I am sadly not very good at modeling( i just started playing) and if theres any sort of advise you could give me about modelling some of the characters (particularly sarpedon, whom is a badass but i dont see how i can give a librarian(or chapter master or whatever he is at the point im at) the spider appendages. lastly i was considering with my friends giving him a made up ability, basically it would be his "the hell" where he would pick a unit within 18 inches and they would have to make a LD check on 3D6 and if failed run away, on 3D6. I thought it sounded fluffy and a couple of my friends agreed. Also feel free to spoil the book for me i honestly dont mind .
Lastly would anyone know of ANY dark eldar books? I really love the army(and its mass amounts of dark lance) and would love to get into the fluff a bit more.

For Sarpedon: There's a range of mini's for Orcs and Goblins from the Fantasy line that are Goblin Spider Riders or something. You could order a spider piece easily off of a bits selling website. It'd be perfect, I think it's a good size to replace the legs.

I love the souldrinker's omnibus. i'm about 1/2 way through the second book right now and think its beautiful. i'd prolly play with the SW codex and model with various builds of chaos marines and some blood angels with souldrinker's shoulders. you could make a pretty sweet sarpedon out of with some legs from the Chaos spawn stuck onto the chaos sorcerer's body. Also cypher the fallen angel i think would make a good chaplin (forgot his name but i'm thinking about the black dude) if you just stick a chaplain's mask on him

that sounds like a great idea honestly. right now i just finished "the killing ground" and the ultramarines omnibus, which was great to read. absolutely loved it. uriel is a great character. anyway back tot he topic at hand:
the problem with my starting a souldrinkers army (as much fun as it would be) they have a playstyle that im not used to, nor do i really like now that i finished the book. i like speed and outmaneuvering, something my DE do with incredibly regularity.
but anyway it would still be fun to paint (as i love purple) and just amazing fun to convert (which is odd coming out my mouth/fingers since i hate converting).
although i must admit i would play them as blood angels, if only for massive amounts of cheese

Blood angel wings/black rage/red thirst, black dragon scales/spikes, iron hands obsessive perfection/mechanization, salamanders onyx skin/red eyes, space wolves teeth/hair/full blown canis helix werewolfism, raven guard have pale skin/black eyes, etc.

Pale Skin and red eyes, or any variation, aren't mutation. That's like saying Africans and Caucasions are mutants.
Iron hand's perfectionism is not a mutation either. They have that idea indoctrinated as a Scout and it's part of Chapter Tradition.
Blood Angels... Do any of them have ACTUAL wings? I have yet to read the new BA codex so I don't know.
Space Wolves... Well you got me there. The Canis Helix allows them to take implants in quick succession, unlike Scouts of other chapters who take at least a decade. However, that itself is not a mutation. When they fail to take to the Canis Helix and THEN mutate into wulfen, well yes. But they also do not have those IN the army. They're ousted or killed.

The third Soul Drinkers book (Crimson Tears) features Dark Eldar actually And Soul Drinkers are meant to be quick and maneuverable. Their modo is "Cold and Fast!" after all, I'm looking into switching my usual codex of worship for my soul drinekrs to blood angels or space wolves myself, from what i'm hearing about blood angels they could help with the fastness.

Some times you have to make a concetion or two, when you use Rhinos just explain it as it's the Soul drinkers before the first book, or in the hopeful future where they build alot of their strength. I try not inhibit my army too much, to many things i would be without.

I would at least check lexicanum or a similar site before shooting someone down. The pale skin and black eyes exhibited by the raven guard is caused by a mutation in the Melanchromic Organ that causes the color changes. It is not simply someone being born on their home planet with those traits. While the salamanders aren't specifically stated as a mutation their skin/eye color is caused by "A result of a reaction between their genetics and the high levels of radiation on Nocturne" which sounds like a mutation to me.
lorgar's_blessed wrote:Iron hand's perfectionism is not a mutation either. They have that idea indoctrinated as a Scout and it's part of Chapter Tradition.
In their chapter approved/index astartes entry it is stated that there is likely some genetic flaw at work that the inquisition has identified but not acted upon(or has been concealed by the iron hands) that causes their fear of the physical form (which in turn causes their obsessive desire to replace limbs/body parts/organs with bionics).
lorgar's_blessed wrote:

Sang got his via daemonic influence but he was the primarch of the blood angels and thus the whole point of my reply to the above person still stands regardless of whether or not blood angels as a chapter have wings. The chapter still has the black rage and red thirst as well which are certainly a mutation of their geneseed(although it may have been caused by the psychic imprint caused by sang's death).
lorgar's_blessed wrote:

I don't think any of your points undermine my original point in replying to the above poster saying that announcing a space marine chapter has mutations is a spoiler because almost all chapters have some sort of mutation, no matter how minor(ie like a missing or mutated betcher's gland, melanchromic gland, etc). The space wolves mutate after receiving the canis helix according to the chapter approved entry I'm reading. Their bones shatter and reform, they grow enormous canines, wolf-like hair, and they are run out of the area until they manage to get control of their new bodies. Some that don't get control of this are known as "wulfen" and are essentially werewolves(either constantly a wolf-man, full wolf, or able to transform at will), but all of the space wolves undergo a great deal of changes that are a result of the altered geneseed.
There was also an entire chapter of former space wolves that utilized wulfen called the wolf brothers (formed when the legions were split into chapters). Even inside the original space wolves chapter there is the 13th company that uses wulfen. They were lost during the horus heresy and returned during the 13th black crusade.

To revive this post just briefly i'd like to announce that I picked up the space wolf codex and tried playing my soul drinkers by their rules. While i'll admit that the special character Njals psychic power(or the tempest thign rather) is probably as close as GW will ever get to the HELL of Sarpedon, i think the codex is too unorthodox. Alot of things i just didnt want to use because i couldnt explain it in my mind (and i'm the guy who said earlier that your just going to have to make compromises with what's useful and what you should have). They are a strong army and i did devastate in close combat, but it's just too funky, none of the wargear seemed right, the choices were all space wolfy no matter how much i tried to think otherwise. Hopefully Blood angels will hit the nail on the head with my wants for a more mid to close range army for my soul drinkers to play as that is imperial.
That is also closer toa ctual space marines in feel.

I think they can be played using normal SM rules. They are loyalists, but considerated traitors.
Love them too!
