Utilizing Careful Highlighting

A post Brexit Wasteland

Hey guys i have just bought my new terminator Chaplain and have never painted black armour and have no idea how to paint it

My idea is to spray chaos black, apply a thin layer of chaos black, highlight with fortress grey and use lots of badab black with with skull white extreme highlights. I am no pro painter and have only just got back from my FLGS, so please dont post any super hard ways but i do want a nice result for it will be my centerpiece.
oh and i play ultramarines!

In the white dwarf with the legion of the damned paint schemes in it (sorry i cant remember which month that was) it has ideas for painting black armour.

was painting at my local shop and one of the staff said something similar to your idea. he said you first undercoat it chaos black, then mix 3 parts black with one part foundation grey (forgot its name), then drybrush with kommando khaki and extreme highlight with foundation grey, but for the last two steps you have to make sure that you get off nearly all of the paint from the brush, otherwise it just starts to turn grey and brown. He plays a raven guard army so he does alot of this sort of stuff.

Dont think there was anything else, and I'll edit in the names of those paints and which month the white dwarf was when I get the chance

Hope that helps

I did these with Charadon Granite over White undercoat, followed by highlights with Adeptus Battlegrey and Codex Grey. I used Armypainter dip to shade the armour, but you could use Badab Black wash instead and the result would be similar.

No need to mix complex colours really.

All I ever used for these three is black and white. Simply adding amounts of white for a gradual highlite and you end up with what I did:

There are two ways to highlight black. The above example using highlights of grey working your way up to a near white. Usefull but I think it makes the mini look to grey.

The other way is to work from a very very very dark blue. (think necron abyss with a fair amount of black in it) You then highlight gradually with blue until you get a sort of glossy black color.

The blue highlight is something like this.

The black-blue style is very nice too.

A good hint that many people pass up is this:
If a mini has lots of "metal" or "iron" parts like armour and hydraulics mixed in one another (dreadnought legs are a perfect example or bionics) then you can use two different shadings of black to different between the various metal types, I use black+white and also use black+blue+white.

It can be seen on my GK dreadnought but not really well due to poor angle of picture:
