I've been running my Tallarn with carapace armor figuring the extra bit of survivability helps them when they're out there on their own.

But it doesn't seem to do them much good, they last an extra turn maybe but that's not much.

Would a demo charge for the same 30 points serve them better? It might blow them up but it might also kill their targets even deader thereby keeping them alive.

Anyone tried it?

I like using carapace for my vets if I have the points for it. It at least saves them from anything ap5 or higher (like bolters, etc.). However, in a mech vet list, I think no carapace is necessary due to the fact that they will be doing most of the firing from the hatch of the chimera which is protecting them. If you have to disembark them for any reason, do it at your own discretion (hopefully next to some cover!). Demo charges give you that extra "umpf" against swarm armies or trying to blow away that one squad that is contesting an objective next to you. They are dangerous because of the close proximity to your own squad, but can be very effective if you make some good rolls.

However, this is just my take on it.

It depends, are they footslogging? As veterans, I would think they're not, so if they're in a chimera or a valk. give 'em the demo charge. Roll up to objective, nuke it.

Yeah, so give 'em a demo charge, see how it goes.

Demo.

Especially when your opponent is on the table at 1st turn(maybe he just forgot to avoid your first-strike from Valks).
