In some ork armies (like mine) you have lootas and burnas in it. When you add up all the costs for individual boxes (assuming you don't convert the mek) you need 54 pounds to get 15 of either. To get 15 of each you need a whoopin 108 pounds! For me that was too much since I had to have 30 lootas and 15 burnas so I decided to do something like this :

1. Buy 1 box of lootas and burna boyz + 1 box of boyz - TOTAL : 25.50 pounds
2. Buy 2 more boxes of lootas and burnas - TOTAL : 27 + 25.50 = 52.50 pounds
3. Repeat step 1 and 2 - TOTAL = 52.50 + 52.50 = 105 pounds

What you do is just attach the burna/loota weapons to the normal boyz and glue 'em to a base and you have twice as much models. Also I can get 3 sets of lootas/burnas out of each box because I use the base and body of the mek too so I have 15 bodies from the loota and burna boxes and 10 from the boyz. That gives me 25 bases and bodies for 24 guys. 1 to spare! Also you can see that for a price of 105 pounds I can get twice as much than for 108 pounds.

Another cheap thing I do is buy battlewagon parts on ebay which comes to a grand total of 13 dollars per BW. If I leave something out I buy more bitz and then fill up gaps with that and plasticard.

About a month or two ago someone far less articulate than yourself posted this same frugal idea. It really makes me happy that the entire Ork range is so interchangeable and easy to convert. To be honest, you should never have to buy a metal model for your Orks, since you can just convert tankbustas from boyz (who come with rokkits and tankbusta bomms) and kommandos from boyz with burna heads.

It is indeed interesting to see how the response to this idea (which I did as well) varies when the poster is articulate and polite about their idea, compared to when a poster seems barely literate. Internet Prejudice is a fickle thing.

But yes, it's quite a smart idea. All I really need for my Orks are battleforces, trukks, nobs, and BWs. Everything else (plus loota/burna boxes) you can mix & match/convert/scratchbuild.
