In wh40k i noticed that all my space marine miniatures are mounted on round base's, and lack room for a stunning base...i was wondering if square shaped bases where allowed?

do not judge what cannot see, hear, or talk... an enemy comes in ever shape and size...

The models shall be mounted on bases with the same shape and size as they are delivered with. You are allowed to change to for instance to a resin scenic base of the same size and shape. No square bases in 40k.

The base size have a important function in the game, and if you want your model to function as intended and still be tournament legal you should not change size or shape. You can get a higher base, some resin bases are, but then you will suffer from better LOS for your opponent.

Square bases exist in fantasy to allow "ranking" up of your figures. Since 40k is a skirmish game the bases are round.

It's real easy to base your model on a small 25mm base and to make a bigger base with a 25mm hole in it just for display.

a bit like this :

(it's not spectacular painting, but you can clearly see that the model are on standard base)
