Hi all, I have recently started building and painting up marines I bought a while ago, I decided on Ultramarines as I like he blue/white colour scheme.

This was fine until I saw several pieces of BT art and these have made me really really want a BT force.

Now its not really an issue to redo the razorback and AOBR dread I have already painted in smurf blue as there not complete and an airbrush makes the paint nice and thin.

My question is would my fellow dakkites object to a BT force using the new "basic" marine codex?
I would still aim to have it follow the choices in the BT codex but be using the more up to date rules and points costs.

Sure I sacrifice some special rules but I think thats ok

Thanks all

Somewhere in south-central England.

I assume you mean a force painted black or whatever Templars are (I don't know the iconography) but using Standard SM Codex rules.

I don't see a problem. It's like any other homebrew chapter except you are using an "official" colour scheme.

If you entered a tournament it would be good to tell opponents that although you are using the BT colour scheme your force is composed from the SM codex.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Good advice KK

I dont really see anyone having a problem with it and it means I get up to date rules along with the extra fancy bits pack the BT have

I guess you could do it but... you would lose tons of awesomeness.

TONS of awesomeness you say?

I had thought it would only be 50-60Kg of awesome

I just want to be able to field ironclad dreads and have my troops in LR variants be able to assault after the thing moves

Just don't mix codexes.

I would still aim to have it follow the choices in the BT codex but be using the more up to date rules and points costs.

If you just want to use the Black Templar miniatures and bling because you like the look, that is fine.

1. Tell your opponents ahead of time so there is no confusion.
2. Don't use stuff from both Codexes. You can't pick and choose what rules you want to use and what upgrades or special units you want to use from both codexes. You pick one, and that's it.

That make sense?

I use Dark Angel iconography with Black Templar and Dark Angel bits on models painted in my own colourscheme.

And I use whatever single codex I feel like that day to field them. It is wonderfully liberating really.

Here is an example;

Yup... I'm a Ultramarine player, but the SW and BA releases are making me want to do a custom chapter that I can use with all the "non-vanilla" Marine codicies.

Check out my blog for bat reps and pics of my Ultramarine Honorguard (Counts as GK) Army!

As an original Dark Angel players I see the other chapters as my Bloodwing, Wolfwing and Swordwing.

LOL... I'm glad I'm not alone in taking advantage of all the Marine variants.

Yeah I know not to mix codex, that would be cheating

The DA bits look cool too I have to admit.

Now I just have to order up my BT bits packs and maybe some termi shoulders from FW

Those are sweet, Steelmage. I think the chains on the weapons (Boltguns, Chainswords, and Bolt Pistols) really add to the OMG-GRIMDARK je ne sais quoi.

Oh, the irony of a man with a Chaos symbol for an avatar playing BT....

I was thinking it. Glad someone said it!

You can always play them as a 'counts as' army or don't even call them that and use the codex anyway.

In like a tournament setting though, you would have to have the correct weaponry (No BP + chainsword on tacticals) and call it 'counts as'

On the way of saim hann blog fritz has an army called "red templars" and they are technically a codex chapter but they counts as black templars.
