Hey everyone.

I am a university student studying psychology and I am getting into warhammer 40K. I haven't bought any minis yet because right now I am just gathering information and what armies I like. So far I am loving Dark Angels and Chaos. I was wondering if any of you could tell me why you guys got into warhammer 40k. I am excited to start and I cant wait to start my first army!

Welcome.

I got into it at school back in 1990, primarily as it was being played by a couple of guys in my grade and I wanted to expand from d&d.

Welcome! I got involved because having sweet and bloody battles in the future is awesome! That and video games get dull after so long.

I got into it because of Dawn of War. I knew about it before because me and my dad were getting into R/C air plans and I saw some guys playing a really cool game in the other side of the store and so I went and just watch them play. I never asked what the game's name was so for 3 more years I was all ways wondering what that game was until my friend showed me this awesome new game Dawn of War and after buying it and playing it all the time I thought I'll check out this web-site and that's how I got into wargaming P.S. sorry for the spelling

Doomsday, welcome to the greatest game/hobby/excuse for disposable income in the world!!!

I wanted to get into 40k since leafing through my cousin's issues of White Dwarf back in the early 90s. I didn't actually play until last March when - after receiving some birthday money - I purchased Assault on Blackreach. Now there is very little I do with my spare time unless it has something to do with 40k. All other games have lost their appeal. I play Chaos and I am starting a Salamanders force.

I highly recommend starting with AoBR. For $75.00, you get a rulebook (minus some of the fluff and special missions) as well as a boat-load of Marine models (terminators and dreadnoughts) that are very expensive otherwise. You can also sell off the Orks to get more kits, or simply save them to teach someone els how to play. The options are limitless! Good luck and may all your rolls be 6s.

My 14 y.o. son got the AOBR game kit. I thought "Well, I can play the orks against him for fun..." now 1 year and HUNDREDS of $ later, I play tabletop at two different local indy game stores Make sure you finish your studies first! This game can be a huge distraction from stuff you'd rather not do

Before the game, Sun Tzu. During the game, Ghazghkull Thrakka.

PM me if you are interested in playing Vassal

Thanks for your replies everyone! Should I get Assault on black reach if I go Dark Angels or Chaos?

Are the Space Marines gonna look all cool with the hoods and robes like Dark Angels? No. But they will give you over 500 points for a very reasonable price - not to mention the dice, templates, and rulebook included also. The regular rulebook is a great buy, but when you're just getting started, you need to save every penny you can.

Also - converting the Dread, Terminators, and Captain (IMO the biggest value in the AoBR set for SMs) to Chaos isn't all that hard. Scrape off an eagle here and add a spikey bit there and you've got a Chaos Marine. Also, the terminators - with some greenstuff and plenty of guns - make excellent obliterators. I would just recommend gluing the least amount together as posible (especially the dread and termies) until you know for sure whether you are going to play SMs or their darker, fallen brethren.

Check out my Oblits in my gallery. They're not Golden Daemon standard and the photos aren't high qualtiy, but everyone at my FLGS loves them!

Finally - don't forget about the added value of the Orks that come with the set. I would say that you can sell them for $30.00 on a bad day on ebay. That $30.00 can buy you a Dark Angels Vet Squad w/ money to spare. You can also use that cash to get your codex and some glue. I say, for any starting 40K player who is interested in SMs - the AoBR set is a MUST. The CSMs conversions will take some work and you may not feel comfortable with it, but I still think they are worth it even if -at bare minimum- you paint them black!
