Ok. The second round is now almost over. First off I have to apologize for lack of pics AND for not writing up the first game (for those unacqauinted each round is best of 3). The reason for not typing up the first game is that there was a rules error on my opponents part and it completely changed the game so he graciously called it a draw instead of a win for him. Big thumbs up to the guy.
So the lists. My nids looks like this:
Hive tyrant
wings
paroxysm
Life leech
2x scything talons
Hive commander
3 zoanthropes in a spod
Doom in a spod
10 ymgarl genestealers
13 gaunts
Tervigon
Crushing claws
catalyst
2 trygons
My opponent ran something like this:
Logan Grimnar
Bjorn the Fell handed
Rune priest (JotWW and some other power which he didn't use)
Assault termies (THSSx3, LCx2)
2 lone wolves (Frost balde on one and THSS second one)
5 man Grey hunters
7 bloodclaws
4 man long fangs (lascannon, plasma cannon and heavy bolter)
Vindicator
Ok, so we rolled for mission and got 3 objectives. Deployment was dawn of war. Essentially there were 4 large ruins in the centre of the board and the edges were sparsely dotted with forests and craters. 2 objectievs placed in the ruins and 1 slightly to the left in a dangerous terrain piece. My opponent won the roll off and made me take first turn. Reserved the gaunts, deployed tervigon in 1 of the ruins and deepstruck everything else. My opponent declared joining Logan and the Rune priest to the blood claws and held everything in reserve barring the lone wolves who would come on in turn 1.
Top of turn 1
Tervigon spawns 8 gaunts so I can claim his objective in the ruins if my big stuff can keep him away from it but I also run dry through rolling a double.
Bottom of turn 1
Lone wolves come on in the centre. 1 tries to shoot my gaunts with his bolt pistol but to no avail.
Top of turn 2
I make all of my reserves rolls and my army piles on to the table. I made the mistake of perhaps pushing too far forward and potentially giving him the charge when his stuff comes on. Gaunts come on from the back. Everything else comes in around the ruins and 2 of the objectives. Shooting is ok. Take out the frost blade wielding weapon lone wolf without breaking a sweat but the other lone wolf survives all the shooting I throw at it. Damn. Although my tyrant did make him WS1 and BS1 with paroxysm. My tervigon also gave my genestealers FnP just in case some shooting came their way in the next turn.
Bottom of turn 2
My opponent rolls quite poorly for his reserves and only gets his long fangs and Bjorn (yay!). Bjorn decides to shoot and charge the Doom. The long fangs make a sensible move in deploying as far away from the objectives as possible. If I want to go get them I have to redirect something big...hmmm. Bjorn hits the Doom 3 times but I only fail 1 invulnerable save. Bjorn also charges said Doom but fortunately he can't break my invulnerable save. We are now stuck on top of an objective. Then his lone wolf charges my zoanthrops and dies before he can attack. Lucky me. Very Lucky me.
Top of turn 3.
There isn't a lot on the table and I wouldn't mind crippling some stuff before the big stuff arrives. Unfortunately that isn't what happens. My trygons try to converge on Bjorn but they fall short (I decided to ignore the Long fangs...I know he will shoot the zoanthropes though I'm not sure why. Bad target priority). The tyrant flies in and decides to show the Doom how things are done. But despite hitting with all my attacks and getting 2 pens and 2 glances, Bjorn 5+ saves both the pens and 1 glance. I roll a 1 for damage. So he's in close combat and can't shoot. Great to know. Bjorn lets fly at my tyrant and gets 3 hits but only 1 wound, thus drawing the combat.
Bottom of turn 3
The reserve rolls favour my opponent and everything except the 5 Grey hunters come on. blood claws prepare to counter charge my tyrant, vindicator lines up shots at the zoanthropes and terminators prepare to take the dangerous terrain objective (well, they come on too far away to do anything else).
His shooting is rough (for him) and after dedicating his long fangs and Vindicator to the zoanthropes, 1 dies, 1 takes a wound and their spod goes splat.
Close combat was much more to his liking. Logan decides to use 2 frost blade attacks and 3 more power fists attacks later. My tyrant takes a gamble and tries to hit Bjorn once but the Rune priest 3 times. I get lucky and 2 hits get through so bye bye JotWW. My single attack on Bjorn pens, but once again he makes his invulnerable save! I was getting frustrated at this point (but much more so later on). Simultaneously Logans frost blade did nothing to my tyrant, as did the blood claws. At I3 Bjorn struck next at the Doom though my invulnerable saved me. Then Logan struck with his PF attacks. All 3 hit and wounded to finish off the tyrant...so close. The Blood claws then backed up to get out of Doom's reach with their consolidate (though looking back they shouldn't have done that since Logan was with them...not that it matters *too* much).
Top of turn 4
The bloodclaws are now blocking my trygons entrance to my combat with Bjorn so it looks like I will have to just go through them. And in an attempt to get Doom the hell out of there I also charge my stealers into Bjorn. Not the best idea in the world but they are out of range of everything else. Zoanthropes move up and smoke the vindicator with some impressive rolling. They did their job and if they can now draw more fire then that's all good. In close combat 1 trygon moves into BtB with the bloodclaws and 1 goes straight to Logan. I figure if I win combat with 1 and try to kill Logan with the other the unit goes down. It didn't quite happen that way though. The first Trygon smoked 4 bloodclaws and the 2nd only managed to put 2 wounds on Logan meaning he was free to hit with 4 powerfist attacks. All 4 got through. I still won the combat but I was still no closer to getting Bjorn off the damn objective. Stubborn ensured Logan and his remaining friends didn't run.
Then the stealer combat. They actually performed really well. I gave them extra S this turn and got 2 pens. 1 immobilized him, the other meant he culdn't move or shoot next turn. With his return attacks he finally killed off the Doom. 3rd time he has done nothing all game.
Bottom of turn 4
The Grey hunters make an appearance and go for the free objective out in the dangerous terrain. If they are fast enough he can redirect his terminators to where they are needed and maybe even get him a win. Long fangs finally finish off the zaonthropes so my opponent is happy. Close combat continues with the trygons. logan tries to knock off the final 2 wounds before I attack with my trygon using his frost blade but only does 1 wound. His 3 surviving blood claws then attempt to hit the same trygon and out of 2 wounds I fail my 3+ save. At least the trygon took out Logan in his death throes. The 2nd trygon then butchers all but 1 blood claw who doesn't run (frustration!). And in other news my genestealers fail to do anything significant through Bjorn's thick armour. 2 glances, both 1's after re-rolls. He kills 2 so another draw.
Top of turn 5
I'm running out of monsters and my opponent still has a 5 man squad of THSS terminators running around. Not looking good. I move my 8 spawned gaunts up nearer bjorn just in case he becomes an objective later on. Not much shooting, though my tervigon did cast FnP on the spawned gaunts so onto cc. Trygon FINALLY finishes the bloodclaw and consolidates but Bjorn manages to kill off 1 stealer and they run for it (More frustration!). It looks like an impossible situation from here on in so I'm playing for the draw from here on in.
Bottom of turn 5
I realize now why his THSS termies hadn't done anything all game. He wasn't sure whether or not he would be able to reach the dangerous terrain objective with his grey hunters and if they couldn't at least the termies could. Fortunately for him they did make it, but he still didn't commit the termies to combat with my now running stealers. I'm not sure if that was a mistake or not. If he attacked I probably would have regrouped and got him bogged down in combat, but as it was he just ensured I kept running (though I wasn't sure if I was in synapse range or not of my tervigon...I checked after the game and it turns out I was out by about 1/2 an inch. So he probably made the right move there).
He fired his devastators at the gaunts. After the smoke had cleared only 1 was dead thanks to some amazing 4+ cover saves followed by FnP for the heavy bolters. Bjorn then fired (shouldn't have but we forgot). Assault cannon did nothing due to bad rolling but the heavy flamer accounted for 3. Not enough if the game was to continue.
So we rolled for the next turn and got a ...2.
A draw...twice. Final game next tuesday.
Afterthoughts:
I really enjoyed this game. Although my opponents list looks really messy it actually performs well on the table. He is a new player but is learning really fast (though his target priority is off but that's something I will tell him AFTER the next game). I'm actually hoping for a game with 2 objectives and I get to go second since against his list it could prove his undoing (no transports, 1 vehicle that doesn't want to move 12" a turn). But I have to say I couldn't have asked for a better opponent or a better game. Even if I go out in the next game I know it will have been to a worthy opponent.
