With a budget of £150, I am looking to create a 1500 point army for a fun, fluffy, but competative army.

I decided on Space Marines because I've done a bit of updating of my Space Wolves recently and have been loving it, and I always wanted to create my own Codex Astartes Chapter (plus I'll get much better stuff for my money with SM!)

So the list of ideas, please comment to your hearts content
------------------------------------------------------------------------

HQ - 318pts

Captain (Relic Blade, Storm Bolter)

Command Squad (2x Power Fist, 2x Combi Melta)

Elites - 145pts

Ironclad Dreadnought (Heavy Flamer)

Troops - 755pts

10 Tactical Marines (Power Fist, Meltagun, Missile Launcher, RHINO, Extra Storm Bolter)

10 Tactical Marines (Plasmagun, Missile Launcher, RHINO, HK Missile)

5 Tactical Marines (Storm Bolter)

10 Scouts (Camo Cloaks, Plasma pistol)

Fast - 265pts

10 Assault Marines (Storm Shield, Thunder Hammer, 2x Plasma pistol)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

This will cost:

2x Space Marine Battle Set (£100)
1x Space Marine Captain (£12)
1x Iron Clad Dreadnought (£25)
Total (£137)

I have considered the following changes:

1) Swap the Ironclad Dreadnought for a Predator or Vindicator BUT I don't feel like Space Marines are Space Marines without a Dreadnought!

2) Swap the 5 man Tactical squad for a Techmarine with a few Servitors but a cheap scoring unit could tip the balance

It eats the budget fast, but really I think a pred, vindi or something would be nice at 1500 pts. I don't really care for the company command squads, I like sternguard and devastators in infantry heavy lists.
Overall though, you could do worse than have all that for 150 pounds.

As a base, why not work from AOBR? 2 AOBR marine sets can be gotten for cheap, and they can make a pretty decent start for 1500. Main problem is needing bits, but if you play wolves I imagine you have extra weapons abound?

Yeah if you want Dreads 2 lots of AOBR looks a good bet. It will be a very elite scewed army though...

Then spend the rest of the dosh on drop pods and/or Rhinos and you'll have 1,500 points of marines with 10 Terminators, 2 Dreads and 2 characters (if you want to take the 2nd). Use SW bits to convert up one character model as you'll not need 2 Captains. Again try to use SW bits for weapons fits for the marines.

It is a good place to start. You could even buy another tac squad to bits and 30 tac marines and then 2 DPs for the dreads and you're done. Sell the Orks and you may even be able to squeeze in a Rhino or Razorback for a tac squad. Or if you source just the marines somewhere you'll have plent of money fror transports and that extra marine squad for weapons and bits. Or if you can find someone starting (or growing) an Ork horde that will go halves you'll have penty of money.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

Yes my Colour is Black but not for the reasons stated mainly just because it's slimming... http://imperiusdominatus.blogspot.com

Also if you buy from Wayland Games you can get that for 20% less than RRP. Postage could be expensive though.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm going to have another look at my options if I go with the AoBR boxes, but I'm not sure I like those marines as much, I enjoy having the options of the free arms and head direction. But it would definitely be a great money saver.

I've looked at the sprues for the AoBR Marines, and I just don't like them very much. I do want to get these as cheap as possible to maximise my options, but I just don't think I'd enjoy painting them (I'm an inexpert converter at best).

But thanks for the Wayland Games thought, I could get all the above for £111.70 (including postage) from Wayland, which means I could buy a Vindicator too and choose which to field. In fact, I could buy the Vindicator too, and still get all the models for less than £137 including postage! That's a HECK of a saving.

With regards to load out on my Tactical marines, are they sensible, or am I going to suffer for not specialising the squads more?

For a budget, you can't do better than that set.

10 Terminators (You can buy conversion bits for assault ones if you want).

Lots of Tac

2x Dreadnought w/ MM

2x Captain

All you would need are some transports.

My advice is never specialize a tactical squad. My favourite loadout is Flamer/MM, but ML does okay in its place.

Q: How many of a specific demographic group are required to carry out a simple task?
A: An arbitrary number. One to carry out the task in question, and the remainder to act in a manner stereotypical of the group.

List wise I would ditch that command squad as they act as bodybags for the captain, without invulnerable saves they will have a tough time.

A second dreadnought to support the ironclad would be great, I would drop the 5 scouts to pay for this. Though a ironclad really needs a drop pod, it belongs in assault.

Rest looks ok. Have you tried e-bay and also www.buyforlessonline.co.uk
