So, anyone ever use them on rhinos or whatever? And if so, when and why?
I don't see a big tactical advantage to them.

well i've never used them personally, but i can certainly see a good reason to do so.
it gives them (working from memory here) a 4+ save as i recall? for a turn that's a 50% chance for whatever the enemy are throwing at you to not hit.
when you're trundling over to that vital objective that will decide the game, i can certainly see it being useful

First someone asking about why everyone uses PowerFists (Who apparently didn't know they ignored armor saves) and now a question about why you would use smoke launchers. Did I miss a memo or something? Is this "Question conventional wisdom of 40K" week?

Smoke launchers are good, they let you get a cover save to close with the enemy more effectively or to improve survivability if you're stunned/shaken and they're free for every army that matters, so it's not like you're wasting points.

hmmm, for some reason I was thinking you could not move and use them. I am guessing that is wrong, I don't have my books handy at work.

You use them to get cover when in the open. You can't shoot and use launchers in the same turn, that might be what you remember.
They're best for Rhino walls which are screening the rest of your advance. Rhino's get cover, the rest gets screened. Good all around.

That will work well for me then, I am in the process of making a rhino-centric SM army.

Yeah, i use mine when doing a rhino-rush. Move them all 12" and pop smoke. On a normal game sized tabel that 12" movement can help you get a vital uit in close to capture objective/destroy a target.

Anythign that helps your rhino get it's payload there safer is worth using.

+1 to Illumini's post. It's really too early for April Fools.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I basically gives a unit the option to charge out of a rhino. Move within 12", pop smoke to protect the tank. next turn the squad can charge out (coz the tank wont have moved). Very handy and MUCH cheaper than an LR.

As a csm player I use 4 rhinos and pop smoke every game.

Turn 1 all rhinos go forward 12" and pop smoke

Turn 2 gor forwad another 12" and drop off troops with melta guns in the enemy deployment zone.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Now you know how awesome they are enough for people to assume this to be an April fools joke.

Seriously, they are good and read the rules again, you might be surprised and pick up on more things to drop kick your opponent with

Yeah, you got made fun of a bit. You also learned some valuable information.

Take one of these away from the thread, the other is not valuable.

Smoke launchers are *excellent* on transports. On other vehicles, they are highly useful when you take a shaken or stunned result, or if you have to use your vehicle as a shield when moving quickly down the field.

I find them quite handy in dawn of war scenarios when my one or two rhinos are the only thing on the board to get shot at. Being the only target in range for the first few turns, cutting the incoming fire down helps no matter where it comes from

Smoke Launchers work real well with the "Rhino Rush" type Attack.
You take 2-3 Rhinos and put them in a /\ formation

The Lead one Pops smoke and gives cover for the other two, the next turn a difrent one takes point and does the same thing

Smoke launchers are used at the end of the movement phase before shooting. I always use them on the first turn, unless it's dawn of war.

They're actually used in the movement phase just after the vehicle moves.

You can use Smoke Launchers regardless of Shaken/Stunned, you just can't shoot. Not even POTMS gets around that though.

I remember smoke launchers requiring movement to work, yet the rulebook says you can still use them while stunned. Does not moving at all count as completing your move now, so you can use smoke even while stationary?
