I'm about 99% sure that I know the answer already, but my friend wanted me to ask this about the WBB rule on Necrons after he felt the sting of losing half his army to a single assault phase when a squad ran off the board edge. So, here's my question. If the Necrons run off the board edge, do they still get a WBB? My friend's argument was that they were technically not denied a save in close combat, nor hit with something with Strength 8 or higher, they should get a WBB roll.

I really wouldn't think they'd get one, but he wanted me to ask, so I will. Do they? I didn't give him the save (Which caused him to nearly break one of my models in a rage by chucking it across the table) but he wanted to know.

Technically, that's not true. But the BGB is pretty clear that they're not taking saves, and since the Crons codex doesn't say anywhere that they get a save from running off the board, this is a well enough interpretation that they do not get a save.

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

Pg. 45 of the BGB:

"If any model from a unit that is falling back moves into contact with the table edge, the entire unit is removed from the game and counts as destroyed."

It doesn't say that they are destroyed.

What does WBB say about being "removed from the game"? If it doesn't protect against being removed, then it doesn't protect against touching the board edge.

Or, for fun, you can grant him the ability to WBB and watch him as he stands up his unit where they died - in contact with the board edge, simply to be destroyed again.

running off the board edge means you are dead and gone.

You are not being removed as a casualty, therefore no WBB. You also cannot measure to ANY model on the table therefore cannot determine if you are within 6" of a like model - so again, no WBB.

Being Destroyed (which WBB does not help against) and being removed as a casualty (which WBB does) are two very different things.
