Subject: Terminus, A beast or did I play him wrong??

Hi All,
I used Terminus in a battle against Khador yesterday. I actually did not feel like I needed his focus for anything then sittng on it. I used the following list:
terminus
-deathjack
- defiler
- Skarlock
warwitch
2X Pistolwraith
2X 3 stitchthralls
10 mech thralls
6 bane thralls
The list is not the best, but it worked against my opponents jackheavy butcher list cosisting of:
butcher
- beast
- jugger
- wardog
MOW drakhun (or however the one on foot is called)
- destroyer
3 MOW demo
2X manhunter
Deathjack ran itself and the witch gave the focus the defiler needed to run. Malediction was not needed from start to finish, nor ravager. (skarlock was useless...) Only time I gave focus to deathjack was when I wanted him to cast Hellfire on the guarddog (which he missed) and when in round 3 beast charged him and whiffed to whoop beasts ass (took him out with 5 focus without a charge, just hit and boost damage). The wraiths kept the jugger at bay and the destroyer was engaged on turn 3 with the banes and lost both it's weapons and cortex. (did trample me after the charge :s). the stitchthralls held my flanks by kepping the manhunters engaged (running to engage them)
except for 1 turn I was always on at least arm 23 or 24. I did not even really need his feat (not that it did much good against this list... ). in the end (turn 4) deathjack doublehanded threw the jugger to the side and terminus charged butcher in the back with 6 focus. he did just enough damage to butcher to take him out, even with 2 whiffs on extra doomsayer attacks... (I used normal attack rolls and boosted damage when hit.)
I like this caster for what he is, but I need to remember his though-ability, because I forgot it quite a lot.
I do have 3 questions on some of the things that happend. I would like to check these with you.
1) Can I charge over a wreckmarker, or end the charge on top of the marker? We ruled yes, because the marker is considered rough terrain, but I want to check.
2) My opponent trampled over my banes. He ended his move just beyond the banes, killing 3 (he missed 2). do the missed thralls get freestrikes, and do they move asside?
3) I protected terminus with the mechthralls. I never left enough room between terminus and the mechthralls to place a heavy base. This way terminus was also protected against charges by tramples isn't he? (so beast could not trample over the thralls and then buy extra attacks to hit terminus...)
Thanx for the answers...

Yeah, that sounds like Terminus. I'm not sure if you need to use his spells, like, ever.
1) Can I charge over a wreckmarker, or end the charge on top of the marker? We ruled yes, because the marker is considered rough terrain, but I want to check.
Yes. Wrecks are rough terrain that provide cover. You take penalties to movement
while in rough terrain but you can still charge (rule should be under the charging
section of the book).
2) My opponent trampled over my banes. He ended his move just beyond the banes, killing 3 (he missed 2). do the missed thralls get freestrikes, and do they move asside?
The only model that moves during a trample is the trampling model. If it will end in
a position that puts it on top of a base, then it cannot trample. The end point of
a trample has to be clear.
Read the trample rules. They tell you that models that the trampler crosses the base
of do NOT get freestrikes. They don't need to be hit, or die, they simply must be
crossed.
If, however, you leave the melee range of another model during your trample whose
base is NOT crossed by your model, then you do take a free strike.
3) I protected terminus with the mechthralls. I never left enough room between terminus and the mechthralls to place a heavy base. This way terminus was also protected against charges by tramples isn't he? (so beast could not trample over the thralls and then buy extra attacks to hit terminus...)
You can't charge and trample at the same time. And yes, blocking the area around him
with bases is an effective way of preventing tramples.

As a Terminus player, let me say this. You cast Malediction on turn one, then never let it drop, unless the enemy gets boosted vs. upkeeps or something.
It's like spending a focus to get +2 to hit, +2 to wound....on every attack you make.
My Terminus Brick looks about like this:
Terminus
-Seether
6 Mechanithralls
6 Bile Thralls
3 Soulhunters
Darragh Wrathe
2 Pistol Wraiths
6 Blackbane's
Works like a charm.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

@ Malfred: I did mean trample and then hit terminus in the end. I wrote it wrong by saying he charged in trampling... sorry about the mixup.. Question remains though, he can buy attacks after a trample with focus on him right??
@ 40kEntousiast: I tought about this, but the focus for upkeep can be pretty expensive sometimes. This and I thought I could cast it after gorging up on the few souls there where (2 manhunters, a wardog and 3 demo. I got only 1 kill on my feat as I missed the dog with a hellfire from the deathjack and the spray from terminus missed the other 2 demo corps. the wraiths also did nothing on feat turn. My plan was to use it on the round I would have about 3 souls (almost max possible) and then use the rest to cast or beat something else to a pulp...

Yes, you can buy attacks after a trample.

Yep, he's a beast. He loves to find a tightly packed shield-walled unit to play with on his feat turn.
Malediction upkept plus Ravager makes for a very lucrative feat turn.

oh yeah, ravager is not a upkeep so it stacks with malediction. missed that
hopefully when I field him again my opponent will let me have a few more souls. I am really anxious to try him again, but I have to check other casters first before I play the same caster again (only a few more to go...

Yeah they stopped ravager being an upkeep because it was too powerful . If your army included the Withershadow Combine and a Skarlock you can have both of these running for free all game. That makes him effectively MAT 9 P+S 18 with a weapon that gets another swing when it destroys an enemy model (providing a soul token if it was living).
The Withershadow can also keep nasty enemy upkeeps off him and give him a re-roll one per turn (handy for keeping a Ravager kill streak going).
I recommend a large 'wall' of Mechanithralls backed up by a Necrosurgeon and a small unit of Bile thralls.

my next purchase was already going to be for the necrosurgeon and stitchthralls (maybe I will convert the trhalls though...).
I also plan on getting the scrapthralls, as I really like what they can do with only a few points (2 points get you 6, can't top that..) Plus they are really good against most lightly armoured infantry. used them in a game where they tied down some seadogs. If they would hit the thralls, they would explode. if they took the freestrike chances where pretty good the seadog would die. If they did not kill me I would strike next turn and on a hit do massive damage to 1 model and moderate to the rest. if I miss I would explode and kill everything in the blastradius because of parasite. Proxying them is over...
The biles I have already, but I think of them as too powerfull to use in this sort of lists. (you now fun try out lists) They are pretty expensive pointswise and I get enough use out of the scrapthralls right now...
