I'm paleknight1 a space marine army user and I also need some help in how to play. Also I would like to know if you can create unique custom characters with there own rules and keep them balanced. I'm sorry for that useless chimera thread too and need some ideas and other prospectives. I hate being annoying but I really want people to chat with.

Welcome to Dakka *2

I know starting a new hobby can be quite a daunting thing to get used to , but you are already fine
considering the price didnt already scare you away!

With that said , first thing i need to ask is , do you have any official GW shops near you?
They offer you tips and assistance from hobby , to a few demo games to get you into the game.

If no GW shop around , are there any FLGS? those are helpful if you ask around on what days
they game. And on the day , tell the owner that you are new and is interested in watching others play.
The owner should be happy to introduce you to the other warhammer players.

Pat that askala, O-H-I hate this stupid state

Welcome to dak dak! You can create custom characters with unique rules as long as your opponent agrees to play it. Now with that being said you cant go to tournaments and use that characters though. What Luna said is a good idea of going to a GW store and playing some demo games.
P.S. Luna your avatar is distracting yet funny at the same time i like it.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

Welcome to Dakka Dakka

The best way to learn is to play the game against someone. Read the basic rules a little and get a more experienced friend to help you out. Start off with the basics, like movement, shooting, assaults, wounding, saves, and cover. Then each time you play after that aim to learn something new. Second should probably include vehicles and maybe some of the special rules. Third could include psychic powers, of course that isn't even a set guidline of what you should expect, simply examples.

Just try not to do too much in the first few games and you'll learn how to play in no time. Also seconding Luna's post, knowing where to find experienced players to help you learn is obviously a good idea.

Lastly, yes you can create your own character and give him rules. Take it over to the proposed rules section so they can help you make it fair. You'll only be able to use it if your opponent agress though, so you'll have to take a copy of the rules for them with you.

If you want to use one of the existing characters and give them a different name thats fine as well, you don't even need your opponent's permission then. You could also build up your own custom model for your leader, as long as your opponent knows what it's meant to represent its fine.
