Greetings first time poster and new member!

I have been mostly a painter (of fantasy orcs & goblins) but recently i have had the notion to start playing 40k
I am sick of orcs so Im going with the tride and true space marines.
I am not going to be using a normal chapter though I will be writing my own fluff for a new chapter.
I do however need suggestions on what I should be doing with my army im building before i start building models.

I figure I will start out with a 500 & 1000 point lists so i can do short games.
I am looking into using some of the dark angels models because the planned style will be to have robes and tabards.
Here is my Space Marine Painter idea sketch

Thanks for any help you guys can offer ahead of time,
Dysturbed

The image isnt working for me , but its great to see Dark Angels , because robes are rare ( most people went with Death Wing? )

Dark Angles are cool but have an out-dated codex(rumers have it they will receive a new dex soon).

You can Do "Vanilla" Marines in Robes no Prob, but I think Chaos Marines in Robes are far cooler(can't see your image either btw so have no idea what scheme you are going for)

As to lists; I suggest not using the cookie cutter lists yu will read here but varying it up on your own.

What playstyle are you looking for?

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Even though though in the picture that doesn't look like it that's Fiery Orange with chaos black. I would probably do some kinda personal heraldry at the bottom right of the robe. Or at least a checker pattern hem. Something to add intrest to the models.

Im thinking of a name with Tiger in it but im not sure what yet.
I was thinking Tiger Claw or Order of the Tiger.
If I did do something with tiger I'm considering using the Black Dragons idea of the claws in some way in the fluff.

I like the scheme, not many armies out there using orange these days(and definitely not making it look good).

In the embrace of the great Nurgle, I am no longer afraid, for with His pestilential favour I have become that which I once most feared: Death.

Looks cool. I like robes, I sprinkle them into my marine armies from time to time. I have a couple veterans in my Salamanders that use DA robes and a few with BT robes and they look cool but you do need something ON the robe to make it look right especially if you plan on doing black robes. When I ran Templars (long long ago) I used red robes, the Salamanders have yellow robes mostly, and my old Chaos army had traitor DA so I simply did the off white brownish robes from that chapter.

I totally agree with you choosing robes AND orange, like someone else said, using orange is rare and if you do it well it will look awesome.

sweet now that I have everyone's attention hehhe.
I have never played yet we don't have alot of pleople here to play so im trying to get someone to split a beginer set with me so i can get the cheap marines to start out.
I have already ordered the 10 piece tac group should be in tomarrow or monday so that is a good start on the numbers for the regular troops.

I was thinking a terminator squaron and a tank of some kind.
Im not the greatest with the points numbers and such like I said i haven't played yet either.
I will get a dreadnot with the beginer set so that would be helpful im sure

I know the play style i have on dawn of war was to use a gak load of marines and then drop a assult marine squad behind whatever im fighting so they have nowhere to run if they fail a moral check but I don't know if that is how it works in the real game.

I would love to see these guys with Chaos Iconography.

That said; I would go with the Vanilla Imperial 'Dex, getting yourself either the Black Templar upgrade or Dark Angels upgrade packs(for the robes/tabards), and do 2-3 Tac Squads with Fist Sgts, and Special/heavy weapons of your Choice, a Librarian(Blue helmet+robes) And 2 Dreadnoughts.

That is and isn't how it works in the real game; you have to completely cut off the enemies retreat lines to wipe them out(rules and diagrams are in the little rulebook that comes with the "starter set")

Your style in DOW is similar to mine in tabletop; I generally have 50+ marines in an 1850 army with few vehicles(3 dreads and a Land raider Crusader to be exact) it is a tough nut to crack unless the opponent is geared to kill massive amounts of marines(which several armies out there can be).

My above list suggestion should get you started in that way.

the two I provided; the BT comes with Tons of bits, and the DA one is cheaper and comes with enough for 1 full squad (10 marines) in robes

seconding what some people have said here BT bits, DA bits or better yet a mix of both are the way to go for the style you're proposing.
I would actually advise using the normal Space Marines codex for the moment - DA and BT are both a bit outdated, DA much more so. As long as you stick to fairly standard units (no thunderfire cannons, land speeder storms, etc) you can switch the whole force over if you find a SM chapter codex thats suits you better - but the ordinary SM codex is probably the best to learn with - it depends on relatively simple, flexible units, not huge assault powerhouses or bizarre special rules.

Yay tac Squad arrived today with about 40 bucks worth of Vajello paints woot. Course when I ordered the paint i was still planning on doing a group of dark angels so i need to order my orange but I still need to get in all my tabards before I start sculpting anyhow.

What weapon setup is ideal for the Tac Squad?
Go ahead and use the flamers or or not?
I know ill keep the rocket launcher and command right?
I don't know what is best. Guess i need to know before i start putting them together too heheh.

ahh like i said i used to paint fantasy orcs. They are a little bigger but i enjoy the challenge. I have 2 assembled now and will be working on finishing the assembly tomarrow.
I added a green stuff loin cloth to my Rocket launcher that looks pretty good (only slightly rough my green stuff is getting a little old hard to work to smooth)
