Subject: Fighting for the Finals of a RTT. A continuation

DISCLAIMER: We may have to strike this game off the record. Since I'm no longer in direct possession of my codex I can't confirm it, but my opponent has since checked the rules for tervigons spawning gaunts. They can't do it after they move...This would make one helluva difference so I'm leaving it up to him what he wants to do (rematch, draw, or continue).
So this is my next game in the RTT fighting for a place in the finals. It's been a gruelling few weeks and I'm struggling to stay cool. This battle is between a friend of mine using IG.
The lists:
Tyranids
Hive tyrant
wings
paroxysm
Life leech
2x scything talons
Hive commander
3 zoanthropes in a spod
Doom in a spod
10 ymgarl genestealers
13 gaunts
Tervigon
Crushing claws
catalyst
2 trygons
Opponents IG (roughly)
Lord Commissar w/ PF
Carapace armour
3 vet squads in vendettas (1 w/ flamer, 1 w/ melta and carapace, 1 with plasma. All have PF's)
1 vet squad with melta in a chimera
3 Leman russes
Mission was multiple objectives - 4 in total. 3 were placed on my right hand side all sort of crowded up (as crowded as you can be when they have to be 12" apart) in my opponents deployment zone. One objective all on it's lonesome on the other side of the board in my deployment zone. Terrain was sparse. 2 large ruins (1 near the centre of the table with my dormant ymgarls in it, and 1 in my deployment zone on the right), a smattering of forests and craters with 2 dangerous terrain pieces in the dead centre.
I won the roll and made my opponent go first. He held all in reserve with no outflanking. I held all in reserve with anything that could DS did and my tervigon outflanking.
Turn 1
Nothing, nada, zip
Top of Turn 2
1 LRBT comes in as well as a chimera and 2 vendettas (1 with flamers, near the centre of the table moving 24" and 1 with plasma vets burns up the table on my right hand side). Chimera and LRBT both pop smoke.
Nothing to shoot at so that's it.
Bottom of Turn 2
I come in with everything except gaunts and both trygons
Tervigon comes in on my right and creates 11 gaunts. Gaunts, with some exceptional shooting wreck the vendetta (4 hits, 1 glance, 1 failed cover save and another 6 to immobilize). Stealers come out of the large ruin near the centre and wreck the vendetta with the flamer unit. Tyrant does nothing. Zoanthropes do nothing. Doom kills 2 vets with his leeching ability. Units in vendettas are both pinned as they bail.
Top of Turn 3
All his stuff comes in. He separates his 2 LRBT's away from the objectives hoping to draw me away. He unloads the HQ vendetta and tries to kill the tervigon. 5 wounds are taken from vendetta lascannons and melta fire from his HQ veterans. LRBT in the centre fails to finish the job after rolling a 1 to wound. Tyrant dies to disembarking chimera plasma veterans squad. LRBT 2 and 3 shoots at the stealers, but only kills 4 due to bad scatter rolls. Doom kills 2 more vets with same ability. Stealers pass their morale check at the end of the phase.
Bottom of Turn 3
Gaunts come in as well as both trygons. 1 trygon goes to tackle the LRBTs on the far side. Other one supports the main objective area. Gaunts try to get to objectives by running all the way up the board. Tervigon creates a whopping 17 gaunts. They move to shoot then assault the hq vets. Other 11 gaunts move to shoot then assault the surviving plasma vets from the vend. Stealers also move to assault the survivors of other downed vendetta.
Doom attempts to suck the life out of the IG squad again but they pass their LD check. Shooting sees trygon and zoanthropes shoot the guys from the chimera but only kill 4 (including 1 plasma gun and sergeant). They pass morale. Large blob of 17 gaunts shoot and manage to kill 3 after some nasty allocation (but the sergeant is dead). Blob of 11 shoot and manage to kill 0 for their efforts. Tervigon also tries to shoot the same squad and using his large blast he kills 3. Doom tries to shoot the vendetta but misses by a considerable amount and goes down to 6 wounds.
In the assault phase my stealers morph to get an extra point of toughness since I will be striking last after going through terrain. This helps considerably as he only gets to inflict a single unsaved wound (power fist included). My stealers strike back and butcher most of them where they stand. The survivors try to fall back but are quickly caught by these ultra-lethal predators.
My large brood of termagants charge to assault the HQ vet squad and manage to kill 3. He then kills 4 in return and I lose another due fearless. In the centre of the battlefield my smaller unit of gaunts also engage his surviving guardsmen. I lose 1 due to dangerous terrain but besides that do quite well. His guys hold but with only 3 models left and with my 7 remaining things look stacked in my favour.
Top of Turn 4
Things are looking grim but he can still force a draw. There is still quite a bit of firepower on the table. There isn't a whole lot of moving to do but his 2 stranded LRBT move 6" just to make it a bit harder for the trygon and stealers to hit them in my turn. Surviving vendetta moves back 6" to the table edge. The single LRBT in the middle of the action tank shocks my Doom spod and kills it as it fails in its DoG attack.
Doom commences things by sucking the life out of all the guardsmen in hand to hand with my small spawned unit of gaunts. The LRBT in the centre shoots at my tervigon and kills it. 5 gaunts that Doom just helped out died to the backlash leaving me with 2 (they passed their morale check). Other 2 LRBT's open fire on my trygon and manage to ID a zoanthrope by mistake as well as their pod. Disembarked chimera vet squad re-embark and rapid fire into the trygon and take it down to a single wound (his plasma rolling was unbelievably good this game). Vendetta then fires all its lascannons at the Doom. 2 hits, 2 wounds and 1 failed invulnerable save later the Doom is naught but a pile of green goo.
Back to the assault phase. I slaughter more of his HQ vet squad, though he does well with his HQ killing equal amounts of mine. By the end he has his Lord commisar and 1 lasgunner, while I have about 10 gaunts surrounding them. Lord commisar is also on 1 wound at this point.
Bottom of Turn 4
Having lost my tervigon and Doom in the centre of the battlefield things become a bit hectic for me. I realize I have no synapse to run the little guys forward. Both the original 13 and surviving 2 gaunts units fail their IB test. I'm beginning to think I have to win the combat with his HQ vets and consolidate onto an objective. The other gaunts are just not reliable and/or are too far away. I move my trygon with 1 wound to get side armour shots on the chimera and then hopefully can assault the contents. A long shot but it's the only one I have at taking out his remaining unengaged troops choices. Genestealers and trygon on the left move towards the LRBT's. Trygon will easily make it but genestealers probably won't (and in fact didn't). 2 remaining zoanthropes move to to take shots at the vend.
In shooting my trygon miraculously pops the transport and the contents bail out but aren't pinned. Zoanthropes eliminate the vendetta, but other than that there wasn't a whole lot going on.
In assault my trygon that wants to eliminates his troops has to take not just a difficult terrain test but a dangerous terrain test as well. Fortune smiles on me as I make both. He then procedes to rip apart the surviving squad members, but unfortunately the power fist wielding sergeant also takes off the last wound. At least his troops are all but gone, as is his mobility.
My other trygon then chews up a LRBT on the other side and eyes up the 2nd.
In a critical combat my gaunts roll well but only the lasgunner dies with the Commissar making all 4 4+ saves he had incoming. Darn it.
Top of Turn 5
Very little movement. LRBT both move 6" just to stop auto hits in cc.
Seeing how the game is going to be determined by the Commissar holding or not, my opponent has no choice really but to shoot the 2 gaunts. If they pass their IB test they could take an objective. Direct hit from the Battlecannon and no amount of cover can save them it seems. This leaves the 2nd battlecannon free to target the zoanthropes but I make my saves, except for 1 heavy bolter which inflicts a single wound.
Combat once again fares poorly for me as I roll badly. Commissar kills 1 more gaunt and I lose another due to fearless.
Bottom of Turn 5
Not much to do since there is very little left. Move up the trygon and stealers to hit the lone LRBT with all I have there. Zoanthropes move around to get side shots against the LRBT in the centre (doesn't matter actually since it's a lance weapon, but never mind).
Shooting sees the zoanthropes take out the LRBT.
Combat...Genestealers managed to nothing to the LRBT, but the trygon ruptures the fuel tanks and the whole thing explodes. I lose a stealer to the explosion.
Finally, after oh so long, the Commissar falls to the swarm. I didn't actually realise that I had tabled him until after he told me. I was all ready to consolidate onto an objective and pray there wasn't another turn.
AFTERTHOUGHTS: Well this was a tough match make no mistake. I knew that my only chance was to destroy his mobility early otherwise chances were later on I wouldn't have been able to do it and he would have dominated the game. Once they were down it was pretty much what I expected. A Great game!

Well done!
Dependency on vendettas for transport reduced his strength. And losing a pair in the first turn made his game grim.

Mechvet/aircav lists are very vulnerable once the transports are popped....in a lower pointage game a mech platoon I feel should be able to do better, as you can field more units which translates to more durability on the battlefield, and the cheaper units (SWS, PCS squads) pack more special weapons, which compensates for the BS of 3.

Very good read. Thank you for the report.
It's interesting to learn that Tervigon can pop gants on the turn they come in from reserve. That really helps, because I thought they have to make it at the beginning of its movement phase, and since tervigon is not on the board yet, so no gant babies on the turn they shown up.

Oh Tony...RTT stands for Rogue Trader Tournament. My list is pretty hardcore compared to what we usually play. After the tournament I'm gonna be switching to horde (40 gargoyles, 40 hormagaunts, 20 gaunts plus a variety of other stuff).
