I'm just getting into 40k and before I really start buying more stuff, I'm curious what point value do people play the most? By the looks of things I see 1500 or like 1850? just curious on everyone's input.

Yeah, at my FLGS points usually range from 1500 to 2000, though the 1500 is the most common.

Game night at FLGS is 2k. Most tournaments there are 1500 so we can get in enough games in one day.

In my area:
General: 1500 - 2000.
Local RTTs I've seen are 1750/1850.
Doubles are 1250 per person shared FoC.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

In my area 1850 is largely considered the "minimum" to build an army. Several army types just can't get all the tools necessary into 1500.

As the rulebook suggests 1500-2000.
I actually like 1500 quite a bit. I forces you to make some hard choices and every decision becomes that more critical.
Of course some people like to be able to just no-brain their way through the codex getting everything they want, but to each their own.

It all depends on what you personally prefer, I play anywhere from 500 to 5000 points and I enjoy all sizes of games (not sure how to word that) But a good way to start is to get the battle force box for what ever army you like and just buy enough extra to make your army an even amount. (I.E. 750, 1000, 1250, 1500) start small and if you feel like you are wanting more buy a bit more. Don't jump up to 2500 right away cause it may not be for you. Don't spend money on a huge army (like i did xD) if you don't enjoy big games or don't have a friend who wants to play one that big. Although having a enough guys for a huge army means you'll have more options for small armies.

1500 is nice because it speeds things up a bit, but i really feel some armies are not at their full potential until you get to the 2000 point size. Anything less and you do not really get to field a good force in some codex's.

It was around 1500, but recently it's been more along the lines of 1750. Occasionally people play 2K but it takes too long and most people like a couple of games an evening

I mostly play 1750 pts.
Common are 1500 to 2000 pts.
The German GT will take place at 1500 pts.
