I've never ran C:SM before, and the codex didn't exactly help me.
If you give your Sternguard Storm Bolter + Special Ammo, that means you have all special ammo at Assault 2 AND Rapid Fire?

How exactly does this work?

No, you cannot use the Special Ammo in Storm Bolters, only in Bolters.

Even if you COULD use it (you can't, just to be clear), it would still be rapid fire.

Special ammunition only works when you fire a bolter. Storm bolters still fire as normal.

In addition to it not working with Storm Bolters, the OP should note that it specifically says that whatever ammunition is chosen by the Sternguard for that round, "replaces the Boltgun profile".

as has been said, you can't use them in anything other than boltguns.
Hence why i don't see any reason to equip your sternguard with any different weapon other than the boltgun (except combi-weapons), if you lose the special ammo choices they lose the main reason you'd want to take them.

someone please correct me if i'm being stupid and there is a good reason not to use boltguns

Combi-weapons are pretty useful with Sternguard. If you want Heavy Weapons, take Devastators.

Combi weapons are great. One heavy flamer can also be useful, since it is an assault weapon. Combine with drop pod, GoI-librarian or a rhino to make maximum use of it.

on the subject of sternguard; are they viable at 800 points?
i'm expanding my list, and am just wondering what a good tactic for using sternguard is, combined with a GoI librarian?

Gate near something which is juicy and will die to one of the ammo modes. Rinse, repeat.

They are *just about* viable at 800, keep em cheap though!

Depends on your build-out and how many Elites and Heavy supports you have left. Unless you take very few bolter marines with your Devastators, Sternguard with heavy weapons are basically the same price per heavy weapon and you get an extra CC attack and special ammo for the regular bolters. It's something to consider if you have extra elite slots available.
