I recently finished enough Salamanders to start up their own gallery. I decided that I could post them up here a little staggered- that way I can get away with posting up some of the close up shots and such.

So here is the first installment: a Salamanders Land Raider. For those interested, you can vote for him on Coolminiornot here.

Very nice for a gaming miniature
Just enough flaws in it to knock it down on the Golden deamon stakes.

That fire is amazing

Sihamoni takes great pride in the league he helped create, as was conveyed in his recent advertising campaign for the CMFL that stated his midgets will "... take on anything; man, beast, or machine."

I like all kinds of commentary.

For a disclaimer- this mini was painted for a commission (which means that I keep track of the amount of time I'm spending on it verses the amount that I was paid to paint it). Also, this mini is no longer in my hands.

However, any commentary I receive will be taken into account on my future projects (both professional and personal). So shoot.

The flames should actually blend from yellow to orange to red, rather than red to orange to yellow.

As mentioned already, you should always drill out the barrels on vehicle weapons.

Other than that, looks good.

When someone smiles at me, all I see is a chimpanzee begging for its life.

I actually painted them this way because I wanted them to look sort of painted. When I'm painting something to look like an actual flame, I use the correct method (you mentioned). But when i want flames to look like decals on a muscle car, I do them backwards (which is often how they're painted on muscle cars). There is a real flame in the army, and that flame is painted correctly (along with some OSL).

Of course, whether or not this effect is successful is up to you.

By the way, this tank has a sister vehicle. I was going to start a new thread, but right now I don't see a reason to.

Well, my client on this project was just a little bit ahead of you. He sent me a bunch of Chapterhouse bits along with the Forge World conversion bits.

From the assembly, I think Chapterhouse does a very good job with their stuff. These bits required a little cutting to make everything fit together, but they worked out very well.

IIRC it is consensus that all Salamanders are of African descent, therefore dark-skinned and black-haired. Maybe you should check that before adding more blondes

They aren't African-Imperials, the chapter suffers from a mutation in their Melanochrome implant which causes them to have coal black skin and red eyes.

There is no consensus on skin color and hair color for Salamanders- mostly because Games Workshop is extremely inconsistent with their presentation. It seems that they can't decide what to do with Salamanders skin.

It doesn't help that Vulkan He'Stan has his helmet on.

A lot of fluff has them with bright yellow hair, and jet black skin (inhumanly black and bright yellow) and yes- red eyes. Clearly these were not of African decent, but were a sort of genetic mutation. The big problem with painting this is that it never looks human (go figure) and the faces just aren't that interesting to look at.

A lot of other stuff GW put out makes them look African (usually with blond hair, sometimes black). These are my favorites, really, since it gives a nod to the old fluff, while at the same time making the minis look human. Black skin and blond hair always looks odd, so many painters leave it out.

There are even studio painted Salamanders who have light skin- completely ignoring any skin color fluff and going for the standard skin tone you'd paint on, say, Ultramarines or Space Wolves. I don't care for this as much, since it give no nod at all to the older fluff, and I really can't imagine that the universe is as racially homogeneous as it is sometimes portrayed.

(mind there's still something weird about all dark skinned people coming from one planet, but that's kind of a space opera sort of thing anyway where an entire planet only has one environment to live in and adapt to).

The ones above all have African-type skin- and one of them has blond hair. That's the look I'm going for for the whole force. I believe it is supported by the somewhat inconsistent fluff on them.

In the SM codex i states that there colouration is to do with there gene seed reacting with their home planets atmosphere which is why they have black hair and red eyes, i will also have a look in the salamanders novels
