I'm thinking of starting a Skaven army. Can anyone give me their opinions on this army? I'm hearing good things about it so far.

Thanks in advance!

My brother has a Skaven Army and his learning warhammer fantasy (hes a former 40k player though) and hes enjoying it. The army really needs an FAQ for a couple things but overall its a pretty versatile horde army that can have a fair amount of shooting. Doomwheel and Hellpit Abominations are good if you like having a big bruising hulk of a model on the table. You will need to get a ton of models for it though though their battalion box set is really solid for starting up a new army since it has a bunch of different units to play around with.

I was thinking of including a lot of war machines (jeezails, warpfile throwers, plague wind glbadiers, etc...), plaguemonks and eshin assassins. If someone could tell me how that'd work out I'd really appreciate it.

I have been playing the new book in several tournaments now, and I have to say they are a great army. Bear in mind, so far my experience shows that the most efficient skaven army relies on redundancy and minimizing the "skaven" factor...namely, blowing yourself up.

Warmachines, with the exception of the Screaming Bell, IMO are a waste of points. Concentrate on blocks of troops, and you cannot go wrong. I use the following list, and I am currently 13-1-1 with the list. Undead caster lists give it a hard time however.

Grey seer on Bell. Staff of Sorcerey, scroll
Plague Priest, lvl 2. Warlock enhanced blade.
Cheiftan. Battle banner

30 Clanrats /w hand weapon +shield
25 Clanrats /w HW SH
20 Slaves
20 Slaves
20 Stormvermin /w Banner of the underempire
10 Giant Rats
10 Giant Rats

20 Plaguemonks
20 Plaguemonks
8 Censers
8 Censers

1 Hellpit Abomination.

This army kicks almost everyones teeth in....give it a shot!

15000 - Tyranids
4000 - Skaven
1500 - Dark Eldar
2500 - Daemons
1500 - Necrons

I'll have to try that as soon as I have the money to buy everything. Thanks! ^_^

I'm impressed by your record with that list HiveFleet, well done. 0 furnace, 0 doomwheel, 0 mortars, just 3 characters. True the HPA does a lot of heavy lifting in any list and censers are (apparently) hot sex, but your list is not the tournament smasher that you see cookie cuttered around. And the bell is working out for you? More for the ward, unbreakable, 360 LoS, etc, or does the ringing do much?

Anyway, nice work

The bell works best as an anvil...then the monks and/or censers kick the crap out of whatever is irritating it...true, i run the risk of someone punking the Grey seer, but having an unbreakable, +5 CR unit is absolutely key. most of the combats I fight in, sheer odds will almost always win it for me. You always have to have at least two or more units charge the same target however, otherwise the units by themselves cannot do too much...

the most efficient unit so far is the plague priest....he is the secret weapon in the plague monk unit...by adding that warlock enhanced blade..he becomes S5 T5 A5 rerolling hits on the charge...he will usually kill enough to win any combat they charge on, or take the odd challenge.

Vampire counts are my bane...responsible for my one loss and draw...the list cannot handle the massive rez'ing of units, and a black coach eats me alive.

The HP abom is a new addition...so far he has done great...except for one game against (ironically) ogres when he charged a 3 bull unit, rolled a 1 for his attack type..did one wound and was promptly ran down.....needless to say my opponent was extactic...me, not so much.

Cool list! I think people will appreciate the choices you've made, even if it is super-effective as you say, it avoids the cliches that people are going to start resenting about the common skaven lists soon, I think! (such as the war machines which you dislike anyway)

My one game against the new skaven was against a max censer-bearer list... not fun at all. I wouldn't mind seeing someone take two units of them, but more.... gah!

Hey Deus_Morte, check out Boss_Salvage's (yay for underscores!) battle report with skaven, he has a cool list with some of the things you mention (poisoned wind globadiers):

Edit: Also, someone mentioned the need for a FAQ above... it's already been released. Phew

In most skaven armies i play against they fit as many templates in as possible and then just clanrats and more clanrats

Am I missing something? I didn't think plague priests had hatred. Censers, yes, but not the priest.

I have to say this looks like a fun army to play against. I take a lot of dwarfs in my list, and I'd still be way outnumbered. Good feel to it. Surprised with no storm banner, though!
