I've just been hacking apart an old Land Raider I built years ago for my CSM, as I've decided to use it in my BA army. It's a hell of a lot of work removing all the Chaos imagery, but I'm getting there slowly. (why did I decide to stick so many spike racks on it...)

Anyway, I just ordered the GW Crusader/Redeemer upgrade sprue, as I want to change it into one of those variants. I've never used either in the past though, so I'm not entirely sure if one is definitively better than the other. I play against 'Nids most of the time, along with Necrons and Witch Hunters, and I'm not sure if either variant would have a distinct advantage.

My only concern with the Redeemer is the incredibly short range of the Flamestorm Cannons. This old LR has the sponsons mounted towards the back, and that may adversely affect the potential of a Template weapon, but I'm not sure the Crusader has enough firepower, especially against Power Armoured armies.

My question is which is the generally more useful variant (if there is one)? It'll help for when the upgrade sprue arrives and I need to decide which variant to make.

Redeemer is superior in nearly every way, your threat range is deceptively large with those cannons. Try to pry the mounting off and put it on the front, that could be a deal breaker for me.

Unfortunately, the sponsons have been glued in for a long time (the LR I'm tearing apart is a couple of years old), so there's no chance of changing where the sponsons are fixed. I would much prefer forward-mounted sponsons on a LRR/LRC but it's not going to be an option for this model.

While the Redeemer's loadout is better, I'm wondering how badly it'll be affected by having the sponsons at the rear...

Redeemers better

Depends entirely on the payload. I need the increased capacity of the Crusader. The ability to carry 8 termi's is invaluable to me. I usually have an attached librarian and chaplain in termi armor to go along with my LC terminators. (yeah i know th/ss is better but I think LC's are more fluffy)
