My friend plays tau and for some reason, he paid for the gun drones on his devilfish, because he thought that they couldn't disengage and form a separate unit unless you paid for them.
So for example, in his mind, a devilfish that just has gun drones standard, and did not pay for them, can shoot with the gun drones (using their BS) but they cannot form a separate unit.
On the other hand, if you do pay for the drones, they CAN form a separate unit.
I pointed out that nobody would bother paying that many points for such an ability, and that it says in the profile for devilfish "2 gun drones" and doesn't mention anything about them not being able to disengage. He's kind of unsure now.
So how did this work? And please, don't post about him being an idiot, because I can somewhat understand his thinking behind it.

This is covered explicitly in the Gun Drone entry within the vehicle armory of Tau Empire, pg 30 (not the "Drone" sidebar on the opposite page).

Funnily enough, it would actually be better if your friend's idea was the way it worked, because the drones count as a separate kill point, since they always form a new unit when they disembark.

Yup, check out the Gun Drone rules, it's actually pretty clear.

For one, this is not really funny. The fact that they give up there own kill point completely nerfs any use they might have one had.

And Zoomdakkadakka, you correctly concluded that the Devilfish already comes with gun drones. And, you don't need to pay for them, as they come standard.

Whichever they are, I'm not on the Reich ones, clearly.

Thank you, SO much, I literally cannot express my gratitude. No sarcasm, actually.
