Hey guys,

So I'm thinking about what 40k army I may eventually start up again... Atm I've got my Blood Ravens (who I can field as just about anything) and my IG (gunline).

I figured the next logical step would be to get a melee-focused army...

Now I love Chaos Marines, their style, etc (been thinking about buying a Lord just so I could paint one)... but I dunno how competitive they are as melee troops (think Khorne themed army perhaps?).

Tyranids I also find very interesting from a painting PoV... and they seem the more obvious choice... but I do prefer Chaos as an army, though Tyranids are a close second!

Chose the army you like the look of and the feel of. Rules and stratergies should come second . I personaly would say chaos becuase of personal experience. Tyrnaids would be a totally different out look , were csm are similar to marines. Chaos do have some nice units and you have more freedom with creating an army compared to normal amrines. You can have your basic chapter with plague marines and noise marines units. It al depends on you though ask around , see what you lke maybe see if you can trest out some peopels armiess out to get an idea of tatics.

Ive heard that zerkers are much less useful than they once were. But I agree with Leeqaex. Pick an army because of the look and feel, then develop it to your strategy, I find this to be much more fun, even when losing.

Also remember that for most of the tyranid models you have to pay $50 for just a model for most of them so that would be something else you might want to take into consideration

Tyranids or CSM? Depends on what you're looking for.

Tyranids or Chaos Daemons? Tyranids. The whole deep strike thing really sucks for any Daemon unit that doesn't have fleet, and makes them extremely vulnerable to shooty armies. Last time I went up against a Daemon player with my Tau force I wiped the floor with him.

Last time I played against Daemons I was using:

2 HammerHeads, 2 FishofFury, and 15 Piranha. He quit bottom of turn 1.

We Are Chaos! Chaos is strowng! ( <- or however the cultists in DoW say it)

well, If I were in your shoes, I would go 'Nids, because having one marine army and getting another one would just be meh. Though, like previously mentioned, I would go with whichever army you like the feel of, maybe play a few games with some proxies and decide from there. Nothing worse then buying a bunch of models for an army you decide you don't like to play.

I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.

Choosing at army you like the feel of and buying an army to win every game are 2 different things.

Buy what you think you will enjoy more when it comes to collecting, painting and playing.

Currently collecting and painting Eldar from W40k.

You played a crappy opponent then. Khorne daemon armies are disgustingly effective. I have seen out local Khorne player wipe every army off the table. 24 Blood Crushers eat almost any army alive, and that isn't even the rest of his units. Daemons are a much more powerful codex for simple reasons: They all have an invulnerable save and they all are eternal warrior. A competent player can even salvage bad deployment rolls and bring out a win. Some of the best players I have ever seen use daemon armies. The reason you don't see the strongest of lists though for daemons is because they are arguably the most expensive army to play, period. One blood crusher is $30, and Bloodthirsters are $50.

I'm glad I got my 6 bloodcrushers when they were $25.../sigh, it still feels like GW is robbing me , sexy models though.

Chaos Daemons are generally win big/lose big...it can end up just a fight against yourself.

Tyranids needs the combos and force multipliers/layers of support to do well.

Chaos Daemons are pretty one dimensional in terms of unit choices and how to apply them, while Tyranids are bit more.......flexible would be the word that comes to mind...not sure if it's 100% the word I'm looking for.

I was referring to CSM... Agh, I really want to get some but I feel like my Blood Ravens would be made pointless.

I'm tempted to e-bay the BRs but they're painted pretty badly, I don't think I'd recover my costs.

CSM are elitest combat units.
Tyranids are more ... swarmy.

Quality vs. Quantity in the most general sence, but I'm sure you know there are variations.

I think the easiest choice is... do you want armor (IE rhinos). Yes = CSM, No = Tyranids.

Since the CSM codex is suffering a little in assaults you could always use the space wolves or blood angels codex to field your chaos marines.

Or get the tyranids if you want a completely different gaming experience.
