Hey all,

Finished my Dark Elf army and am starting to play some games. Keep coming up with questions which I'd like to get your input on:

1. When selecting weapons, may I replace the hand weapon with a magic 1-handed weapon?
Ex: Master - lance, shield, replace hand weapon with Sword of Might

2. Does one of the WFB sets have a template for measuring movement wheels? I see lots of people with Gale Force 9 templates, but didn't know if it was OK to just measure it straight with your tape measure or something.

3. Breath weapons. With the War Hydra, do you indeed just choose a head and put the template up against it? Seems a little weird, just want to make sure I do the friendly-happy thing.

4. If I give a Master on Manticore a pair of handbows and he flies behind a unit and faces them upon landing, can I shoot them in the shooting phase of that same turn?

5. Can you use your shield to add to your AS on the turn you charge with a lance?

Thanks for your help,

Blackbone

Yes, this is the standard magic weapon procedure. A magic weapon replaces the hand weapon. You cannot 'switch back' to a normal hand weapon when you have a magical weapon. Bear in mind that magic weapon and shield does not get the parry bonus that hand weapon and shield get.

2. Does one of the WFB sets have a template for measuring movement wheels? I see lots of people with Gale Force 9 templates, but didn't know if it was OK to just measure it straight with your tape measure or something.

I just use a tape measure myself. So far no one has complained. If they do, ask if you can borrow their templaces. That should solve the problem.

3. Breath weapons. With the War Hydra, do you indeed just choose a head and put the template up against it? Seems a little weird, just want to make sure I do the friendly-happy thing.

Yep, that's exactly how it works. You don't even have to match the angle of the template to the angle of the head.

4. If I give a Master on Manticore a pair of handbows and he flies behind a unit and faces them upon landing, can I shoot them in the shooting phase of that same turn?

Yep. That's what they do.

5. Can you use your shield to add to your AS on the turn you charge with a lance?

Yes. Lances don't take two hands, so the other hand is free to use a shield. Just remember that the lance & shield doesn't get the parry bonus that hand weapon and shield get.

Thanks for your help,

Blackbone

No problem!

No, only with hand weapon

Well, you still get the general +1 AS from a shield. You just don't get the additional +1 parry bonus from hand weapon and shield.

Hey Blackbone. Congratz on finishing your Dark Elves. Will we get to see pictures?

As for the answers to your questions, I'm not a rules guru or anything, but I am pretty sure Vulcan is right about everything. I would also add that with question 1) you still need to choose which weapon you are going to use, either the lance or sword of might. You can't switch in the middle.

Actually, if you have a sword of might (Or any magical weapon), you can't use any mundane melee weapon (Lance, great weapon, etc)

Don't have the BRB with me here at work but IIRC the Hand Weapon isn't actually replaced by the Magic Weapon but the rules force you to always use the magic weapon. But if the magic weapon would be destroyed by magic (Vaul's unmaking or something) you could once again revert to using your handweapon. Am I wrong?

Yes, Vulcan was right except the magical weapon doesnt *replace* the hand weapon, however you are prevented from *using* it whiley ou have a magical weapon (unless you are bretonnian, who can use a lance on the charge and a magical weapon after that)

As for wheeling - this shouldnt be measuerd straight, but on a curve, as that is how the unit wheels - it adds a little bit to the wheel distance. None of the sets have ever had wheel guides.

So what is the consensus re: purchasing a lance and a magic weapon? I can't find anything in the BRB or my army book.

For the lance section, it just says "choose one" and then later it says "50 pts of magic items".

Thanks for the answers. I will post pics of completed army on my painting blog soon. I got a bad matte-coat from Purity Seal and am trying to clean off some of the fuzziness on some models. Grr...

Well, you CAN purchase a Lance and a Magic Weapon, however if you are DE you will only be able to *use* the Magic Weapon. That is covered explictly in the rules for magic weapons and is not debateable.

The only exception are Brettonians, who are given explicit permission to use a lance on the turn they charge and swap to a magic weapon after. These are the only ones to have this permsision.

On another question, the one about charging with a lance and using a sheild (one day I will figure out quoting posts).

Cavalry do not recieve the +1 AS from using hand weapon and sheild together.

Just make sure you're distinguishing between the +1 AS from a shield, and the +1 AS "parry" bonus.

The former is granted any time you are shot or are using a one-handed weapon in close combat. The latter is only when combined with a mundane hand weapon, only when on foot, and only when saving against hits from the front in close combat.

@Zeke

where in the book does it say you only get that save to when the attack is to the front?

Somebody else brought that up at our group and nobody could find it in the group. Seems odd that the same thing would pop up on dakka.

I *think* it is in the weapon description, you know, the two pages where they are all described. I don't remember the page number but I will look it up tonight.

If you are in close combat and using a one handed weapon, you gain a +1AS bonus.

In Addition, IF you are fighting with a Hand Weapon *or* a magic weapon that states it is also a Hand Weapon then you gain an additional +1AS when fighting to your front.

This is either in the bonuses to armour save section (barding is listed there, if memory serves) or else in the Hand weapon section in the 2 page description of close/ranged weapons.
