So, for some time my group has been playtesting the concept of casters not only being able to swap for the first spell on their list, but up to their level. You still have to take lower spells first (1 then 2 then 3 etc), But everyone seems to really enjoy the tactical flexibility, and fluffness of the idea. Try it out and let me know your thoughts

Fantasy: 4000 - WoC, 1500 - VC, 1500 - Beastmen
40k: 2000 - White Scars
Hordes: 5/100 - Circle of Orboros

Hmmm, interesting... so a level 4 could opt for the first 4 spells of a lore (not that he'd want to...)?

I really enjoy swapping for the first spell, and I guess if I was taking lore of beasts (if I ever field a lvl 4 spellweaver that has access to it...) I'd like to be able to get the second spell if I didn't roll for it.

Nice idea

I can see how that would enable a little more tactical flexibility, but it defeats the purpose of various things. For instance, why would Skaven Warlock Engineers need the ability to take Warp Lightening? Any Lv.2 could do that, that's no benefit. Yes it's great for people who don't have that, but that's what makes the ones who do special.

And yes... certain things like Vampires could abuse it to no end.

*sighs* Oh no, a vampire counts army is going to have a magic phase...

Anyway, I think the OP's idea would probably lead even more people to take Lord-level casters as they would be even more dependable. Poor combat lords.....
