Hey Everyone,
Is 11.50 GBP (8.50 GBP, 2 GBP for some signature upon delivery) a reasonable price to ask for shipping for 25 Tyranid models (1x Biovore, 10x Genestealer, 9x Hormogaunts, 4x spore mines, 1x Ripper swarm) from Leichesterchire, UK to Ohio?
Someone is asking that much to ship the aforementioned models, and I think it's a bit much. I took approximately that many models to my local post office this morning--8x Genestealers, 12x Hormogaunts, 1x metal chest/carapace from a metal Carnifex, since I don't have a Biovore, but I'm guessin it's the same weight.
The total price for these items was about 7.50 usd..which is just under 5 GBP, HALF The PRICE they're charging me for shipping!!
So, I don't know how shipping works in the UK, perhaps it's actually a bit more than that, but I think 8-10 GPB is a bit much...hopefully somebody in the UK could check on that or confirm it.
I feel like I'm getting ripped off!

It's international shipping if their shipping to you here in the us. I've shipped models for people just to canada and it costs around $20-25 depending for the slowest option. Amount sounds about right to me.

Well, when I took it to the post office, it only cost me about $7 or so to ship the exact same models to the UK. I can't imagine how it would be double that to ship it from UK to here.

You also have to consider customs charges. I sent a package for a trade to UK. Cost me $20, but it cost him an additional $45 to pick up...
Sent another from US to Norway (world wide priority) and it took 3 weeks...
Weird stuff happens when you ship oversees.

Hey now, our polar bears are expensive.
But yeah, amount sounds right. I pay 30-35 to ship stuff down to Hulksmash, so it looks like the amounts add up.

Laws to ship things into America are much stricter than the vice versa option.
The American customs is one of the strictest in the world bar Australia I think?
Thats why it's so expensive.

It isnt as simple as currency conversion. We pay much more for our postal service than in the US.

The US Postal Service website has a function that allows you to calculate postage. To give you an idea, their small-size flat rate box to the UK is $13, which is an 8"x6"x2" box, maximum four pounds. Their medium size box is $41, which is 11"x8"x5", maximum 20 pounds. What you can do is use the website to calculate the potential cost of an imaginary package you think might be around the size and weight of the box you're expecting, going from and to the places you want.
But I'm illiterate and it's being shipped the other way around. I would say you can probably do the same with their post office's website, but at least that'll give you an idea.
More to the point, if somebody asks for $15 for shipping, don't think of it costing that much for shipping; just think of it being part of the cost of the figures. If you paid $8 for the figures, and it's costing you $15 for shipping, then you're paying $23 for them.

That's not bad actually. IDK what they do there but in the US we got Flat rae boxes at USPS and they will ship around the world for like 7 10 or 13 dollars depending the size of the box if you do your own then its based on size and wieght which can end up being expensive.

I ship to the USA and Canada almost every day.
These models should be less than 500g so the shipping cost to USA with recorded delivery is £10.51 GBP.
Although without recorded (unneeded for such a small value item IMHO) is £6.51 GBP.
Ask him to ship them unrecorded.
Hope that helps

I Always factor in the cost of shipping for the total price of the item. In this case, I thought I would be getting the 10x Genestealers, 9x Gaunts, 1x Biovore and spore mines for about $26 USD, which I thought was a pretty good deal. Instead it's $36-$38 USD, though it might be less if he removes the "recorded shipment" option. Still it seems like it's going to be at least $33, which was significantly more than I expected. And since the models are poorly painted and will need to be stripped down, I don't know if that's a good deal or not.
Anyways, do you know what site I can look up UK shipping rates on?

But this is $13 minimum, or $17 standard shipping. Shipping the same items from the US to UK was only $7.50, which seems way more reasonable to me.

Yeah, he said he would ship them un-recorded and it would cost 2 GBP less. So instead of 11.50 it would be 8.50 GBP. Still seems a bit too high for me. But I'll ask again.

The only way you can get a USPS postage rate to the UK of under $12.95 is to ship a package that weighs 1.25 pounds or less via First Class Mail International. Your $7.50 price puts the weight down to half a pound. Based on the weight of the all-metal biovore, I wondering if you factored the weight of decent packaging into your estimate? Over eleven pounds does still seem a little high, but crossing the Atlantic with anything besides a letter is never cheap.

You want the Royal Mail or Parcelforce websites; here's the Royal Mail International page.
http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump1?catId=400023&mediaId=400033
As an aside I would have thought it is a choice that the seller is offering re recorded delivery. You can either pay the additional money to ensure delivery [insured too I think] or you can have standard delivery @ the buyers risk but saving a few quid?
Also as other have pointed out there are further costs to posting than just the delivery service.
In that situation I think I would prefer the extra security.

No you arnt getting gouged.
Box dimension and weight can EASILY reach that price if not higher. You have to remember , the increments are really big in shipping fee once it gets over the size or weight.
I have shipped , and received items from UK.
For example , it costed me $46 to ship via snail mail ( 1 month ) The other side was really generous , sent via air mail ( 1 week ish ) and costed him $75+
You arnt getting gouged , ask him to show receipt if you have doubts.

Royal mail proof of postage is insured up tp £38 GBP.
Like I said small value items are covered so recorded is only worth it if:
a) You really badly want the thing that is being posted (i.e. it's rare or of sentimental value)
b) The value is higher than £38

I recently sent a couple of models (oop plastic SM vehicles) to the US, and it cost me ~£8.50 each (which included airsure insurance). Add in the cost of the boxes and bubblewrap and you're looking at about £10 ish - so paying £11 for p&p is not that bad.
Just my thoughts anyway!

Another thing to bear in mind (as Silent_Spectre says) is the cost of packaging (the Royal Mail boxes can be £3 or so depending on size, then there's bubble-wrap and so on too).
If they're not well-packaged, though, then you may be being overcharged for packaging. But the total cost for those models and shipping sounds like a reasonable deal overall.

It's been a couple of years since I've had anything sent to me from the UK, but that price sounds high to me. RM Small Packet Post used to be a very economical way to get small packages around the world cheap.
