I saw a lot of people suggesting the quad pistol case as a inexpensive alternative to the GW figure case. I was wondering if Dakka could give me some more information on it. How is it with bigger models like the DE hydra or manticore? About how many models can you fit into it? Is there any other useful information you can share with a noob?

I don't know this particular case, but I use a pistol case to carry some of my stuff. GW cases are basically just repurposed pistol cases with a big ol' Imperial eagle on the front of them. Gun cases usually have eggcrate foam, which means you'll probably have to custom cut everything to size. My pistol case is about 2" tall, which means I can have things like Guard gunteams and sentinels in it on their side. With some inventive re-jiggering, you could take a layer of Sabol pluck foam and fit that into a case. Alternately, you could talk to the Battlefoam guys - they might be able to custom-cut something for your needs.

My 4-pistol cases came with three layers of foam- eggcrate on either side of a flat piece.

I didn't bother with any cutting. For infantry, I just laid the minis in the depressions of the eggcrate. Cavalry were arranged on the flat foam. When the case was closed, the compression was firm enough that everything stayed put.

For larger models, I just took out the middle flat foam. About the only thing I never carried in the cases were my dragons. Almost everything else- chariots, war-griffons, hydras, spawn- went in without difficulty.

I used two pistol cases for several years, and had no problem transporting 2000 to 2250 points worth of Empire or Dark Elves.

I liked the way the eggcrate worked, so eventually I bought a big sheet and cut it to fit in the GW army boxes (the big cardboard ones that Army Deals used to come in), and these days, those big boxes that printer paper comes in. Now I can easily cart around the entire army, and am not constantly unloading/reloading the pistol cases.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I think I might break down and order one or two. At $15 a piece, its hard not to.
