So right now my Necrons have been Chaos Black primed, then painted Boltgun Metal. The tubes on the guns are painted Dark Angels Green then Highlighted with Scorpion Green.

How can I make them look better and not so silver only?

I'm considering washes right now, I currently only have a Black Ink (now discontinued lol), which seems to leave black marks on the model, like I dip the brush in the ink, then dip it lighty & quickly into water a couple times, i've even tried then lightly touching a paper towel with that, and then dipping it again a couple times into water and then onto the model. I dont like it's effect, as it leaves black stains on the model without really improving the model, other than shading and the darkening the creases. so I need to go to the store and get some of the new washes.

I saw in the codex there's a Necron that has Boltgun Metal & Regal Blue mixed, it looks quite cool. How do you achieve that effect, paint the model silver than highlight with a mixed color or something?

Thanks for help.

Well the bluish look your asking about, is basically your silver Necrons with a blue wash over them. It can get alot more detailed then that, but thats pretty much the baseline method. I think if you posted a picture or two we could help you out a bit more. Normally though, either usea colored wash to make them a different tint, or people just paint them something completely different then robocop Crons, IE bone Necrons or Ice Necrons.

You could give them a mixture of washes to make them look oily. Someone on dakka has already done it and i'm sure you could find out how they did it from their post.

Another way to improve them would be to use OSL to make the insides of their chests and eyes glow. Either orange of green looks good.

Black Ink is more for making stuff looked burnt or even darkened clouds if you're doing some freehand, a black wash would work better. Probably test with the blue wash, if you don't like it mix a tiny bit of blue into the silver and see if that looks better, though a light drybrush of the colour over metal will usually look better than mixing it in with the metal. Basically it comes down to experimenting sometimes

I think the blue wash is a perfect idea... post up pics when you try it

my friend told me to control the washes with your brush, because you dont want the wash on the flat surfaces, you want it into the recesses. I'll try this tactic next time I use a wash.

Yeah for sure I'm gona be trying a couple different techniques here like first I'll try boltgun metal, then a blue wash. See how that turns out. Also I'll try boltgun metal but then eithe really watered down or just barely watered down blues onto the silver necrons, as highlights or something.

For sure. I won't post pics right now, but once I've tried a few different ideas here, I'll post some before pictures and after pictures. Then I can get further feedback from the pics

Pick another metal (or just another color in general) you think would match your tastes and would complement the green. I used gold on mine.

Now paint all the shoulderblade "pads" that color. Add this color to the gun as well. In fact, just try to detail the cables and blade on the flayer anyway, goes a long way.

Paint the "pupils" of each 'cron, and paint the emblem on each chest.

I used too much blue and gota do more coats to get a smooth look, but heres a prototype of what I could use as a color scheme.

Better than my old silver ones lol

1.) Don't paint the green rods.
2.) Get inspired by these: http://www.hivefleetmoloch.de/terror_from_the_black_lagoon.php

base coat the necrons in boltgun metal,
wash the models in badab black (it will look great after that)
to add some colour, wash blue in the deepest recesses, but just a little bit.

i would prime the gun black, dry brush with the foundation deep gray then wash badab black.

dont paint the green on the gun, leave it for last and place it in once you have finished painting the model.

also try different bases, urban ones would look great with the necrons.

My down and Dirty Necrons. I did this army over a weekend including assembly. You can eliminate the rust stage and the second layer of badab.

1) Prime Black (Krylon Ultra Flat Black)
2) SPray Silver, Krylon Metallic SHimmer: Nickel http://www.usartsupply.com/krylon/fusion-for-plastic-metallic.aspx
3a) wash Badab Black thinned 1: 2 Water to Wash
3b) wash second time w/ Badab black, concentrate in low areas you want shade
4) Base w/ Mixed Sand and PVA glue.
5) Mix up a red brown thinned 15:1 w/ water. Dab over and in crevises for a rust effect.
6) Use Green Ink on the Gauss Hoses and Symbol on chest.
7) Paint Base Scorched brown. Highlight w/ Vomit brown. Highlight w/ Bleached Bone.
8) Hit base w/ rust weathering powder.
9) glue on Green Plastic.

Green Eyes on Destroyers/scarab and TS, & Res Orb.
1) base Dark Angel Green
2) Goblin Green
3) Scorpion Green
For large areas I blend between the colors.

Check the articles section for tips on taking photos. It's hard to see what's going on under the blur.

That said, I like where you are going with the blue. From the leg that is clear in the front on shot I think you have a good effect there.

Other thoughts:

1) Paint the bases before laying the grass down. Will look better with brown under the grass than black.
2) A very light black wash before the blue will shade it nicely or you can prime black and leave the black in the recesses at the silver stage.
3) Details! Do the chest detail and the eyes. Little spots of color will stand out and really improve the look.

Keep at it
