I'm new to 40k and decided that Tyranids were the way to go! I got the battle force box and so far they are going together smoothly! I hope to have some pics to put up soon and maybe someone can contribute some ideas as to how to expand the swarm.

Welcome to Dakka. This is proberly best suited in a more question based section of the forum but i'll give a quick answer.
Get a Hive Tyrant, for the sheer awesomeness and synapse. If you really want, get it a few Tyrant Guard too.
Then go and get some Zoanthropes, their tank destroying capabilites are un-rivialed.
Maybe then get a unit of Genestealers and a Broodlord for some shock troops.
Finally a Trygon or Mawloc would make another cool addition.
The rest would be a matter of personal preference but i believe all those are core to most successful competitve 'Nid lists.

I wonder.... 'Nids devour the biomass of dead 'Nids on a planet they're devouring, so how many times does the average 'Nids biomass get re-digested? o.O!
Also, considering the usual size of a non Nidzilla casualty pile, sometimes they might even get more biomass from the dead bugs than from the planet! Epic phailz much, anyonez?

If you're new to bugs make sure one of your early purchases is a Hive Tyrant. It will see a lot of use and performs well in games. Great unit to have.

FYI, things I've heard that work well and must-haves: Tyrant, Tyrannofex's (are they a unit or a type of Carni?) and the what's-it's-face bug spawner

@ LEEQAEX- Tell me it didn't rip too many apart...
@ Darkvoidof40k- The Tyranofex is an odd looking bug with a HUGE gun directly under its head, kinda looks like an excessively armed turtle lol. As for the "what's-it's-face bug spawner" is something I am going to have to make from scratch or a conversion that I am not looking forward to attempting.
