As proposed in an earlier discussion, I've thought of this. Before you jump to destructions, I've play-tested and refined this rule.

WS6 BS5 S6 Av: F13 S12 R10 I5 A3 200 pts
Taken as an HQ

Rules:
Independant Character (if thats possible?)
Orbital bombardment (maybe?)
Venerable (would be a venerable dreadnought.)

Wargear:
DCCW, Storm bolter
Multi-melta
Iron halo (maybe?)
Searchlight
Smoke launchers

Options:
May:
Replace storm bolter with heavy flamer ............ 10 pts
May replace multi-melta with:
- Twin linked Heavy flamer ............................ FREE
- Twin linked Heavy Bolter ............................. 5 pts
- Twin linked Autocannon .............................. 10 pts
- Plasma cannon or Assault cannon ................ 10 pts
- Twin linked Lascannon ................................ 30 pts
May replace DCCW and Storm bolter for:
- Twin linked Autocannon or Missile launcher ... 10 pts
Take extra armour .......................................... 15 pts

I'm pretty much sold on this, as a concept.

Have you tried it without jazzed up WS BS and Front armour?
Maybe WS 5 BS 5 S 5 Front 12 is what I would probably use.

Don't know about the Iron Halo, seems like too much overkill with the current stats.

I would just suggest you keep bjorn in mind. He is a Space wolves Dreadnought HQ choice. Keep his stats and is his invul save (5++) in mind when adding all the goodies to yours.

The iron halo and bombardment are too much, imo. The rest seems pretty legit for the points.

Oh I'd love that. The only problem would be if you took this Dread HQ, and he allowed you to have Dreads as troops, then you also took a MotF, which allows you to take them as HS too. That's 12 dreads.

I don't like it, personally. I don't think any HQ should be allowed to be a vehicle.

They can't join squads, for one thing.

Independent Character is not possible for said vehicle, unless you make Dreadnought squadrons and make a rule allowing the IC to join. (don't.)

Replace orbital bombardment with a Ld bubble perhaps? (Provides Ld 10 to units within 18")
If you're looking for a badass Dreadnought, don't bother making him a HQ. If you want a commander, I'd suggest the Ld bubble.

good to see people aren't jumping to the conclusion it's a useless idea. thanks for the improovements.

I considered the jazzed up stats because it could be like a long-gone captain.

I'd like WS/BS5 but S6 definate, iron halo should be as standard on Bjorn the fell handed, too.

What are your thoughts on the changes? (shall they be done, or not. Why or why not?)

As a note Solon, it isn't a useless idea...because this one seems reasonably priced...has potential uses in-game, and isn't over-powered.

Cannot be taken with a captain or chaptermaster.

can only be one in the army.

Can take an upgrade that allows all morale and pinning tests to be automatically passed. (12" range?)(kinda like a chapter banner) for maybe 40 extra points?

My Iron Hands would be pleased if this became official.
You should add an option to replace the MM with another DCCW for 15 pts, like the FW chappy dread.

As a Guard player, I'd advocate an Ld bubble or something simmilar to the "Command Baneblade" upgrade for Apocalypse games.
Give a radius, maybe some different special rules and drop the iron halo
