Depends upon the wording of the weapon and the abilities of the MC.

Some weapons say "cause instant death" while some MC have "immune to instant death". Some say "remove model from play" and some MC say "ouch that fething sucks".

a force weapon will cause instant death on anything with a successful wound followed by a Ld test.

of course, if the said model has eternal warrior, then it laughs at the forceweapon

the creature itself would have to have a rule preventing instant death. simply being a monstrous creature doesn't give you any protection from instant death outside of the normal high toughness those models generally have. tyranids USED TO have a blanket protection from it and they are the army most likely to field MC but that is no longer true with the current codex.

Force Weapons work on anything that is not an Eternal Warrior/otherwise immune to instant death. Monstrous creatures are not immune to instant death unless they specifically have Eternal Warrior.

In addition, Daemon Hunter Force Weapons "slay outright" anything, entirely bypassing Eternal Warrior or similar immunities from instant death.

This is because they follow their rules for Force Weapons.

Is your friend perhaps getting confused with gargantuan creatures, like some of the FW models ? They cannot be insta killed by force weapons.

Just remember SYnapse no longer grants immunity to instant death.

Normal Daemonhunters Force Weapons (page 17), not NFW (unless BroCap Stern or Grandmaster)
