Columbus, Oh

Had a chance to get away and play a game last night, at my FLGS. When I got there, almost all the tables were in use.. lotta folks last night!

While waiting for a free table, said Hi to a latecomer, who also was looking for a game. Turns out.. this is Darkzephyr from here on Dakka! Alright! A face to go with an internet handle. So, Darkzephyr (aka Barnabas) running Orks, and Porkuslime (aka Jim) running Space Wolves, set down to have a battle.....

Get of Freki -

HQ -
Wolf Priest - 100
Rune Priest - 100 (Living Lightning, Jaws of the World Wolf)
Rune Priest - 100 (Living Lightning, Storm Caller)

Troops -
9 Grey Hunters, 1 Plasma Gun, 1 PF/bolter, 1 Bolter/Mark of Wulfen, 6 basic Grey Hunters in Rhino, (plus RP)- 205

9 Grey Hunters, 1 Plasma Gun, 1 PF/Bolter, 1 Mark of Wulfen, 6 basic GH in a Rhino with Storm Bolter, (plus RP)- 205

10 Grey Hunters, 1 Meltagun, 1 PF/Bolter, 1 Mark of Wulfen, 7 basic GH in a Drop Pod with Storm Bolter - 220

10 Grey Hunters, 2 Meltaguns, 1 PF/Bolter, 1 Mark of Wulfen, 6 basic GH in a Drop Pod with Storm Bolter - 230

12 Blood Claws, 1 Flamer, 1 PF/BP, 10 CCW/BP, (plus Wolf Priest)- 205

Heavy Support -

Land Raider Crusader with MultiMelta - 260

Long Fangs - Sarge, plus 3 Missile Launchers and 2 Lascannons - 170

Total - 1795

At the time, when I made the list .. I completely forgot to account for the Lascannons on the Long Fangs, and totalled my list at 1745.. which is what I told my opponent. Math error on my part, and I really am sorry. As the battle played out, though, the upgrade to Lascannons did diddly-squat..

Darkzephyr's Ork Horde

HQ
Warboss, PK, Cybork, Combi-Skorcha 100pts
Big Mek KFF, Burna 105 pts.

Troops
11xBoyz, Nob w/ PK, BP in Trukk w/ Reinforced Ram (warboss here) 146

11xBoyz, Nob w/ PK, BP in Trukk w/ Reinforced Ram (Mekboy here) 146

20x Boyz, Nob w/ PK, BP (in BW) 170

20x Boyz, Nob w/ PK, BP (in BW) 170

6x Nob Bikers w/ Painboy, Waaugh banner, 2x PK, BP 400 (Troops due to Warboss)

Heavy
BattleWagon w/ Deffolla, Grot Riggas, Big Shoota 120
BattleWagon w/ Deffolla, Grot Riggas, Big Shoota 120

Elite
9x Lootas 135
9x Lootas 135

Which totals up to 1747 which makes my 50 point overrun look some bad..

One game was in cleanup mode, so we asked them to leave the board and terrain and we would just use it as is.. Barnabas decided to add some terrain in the corners, for his Lootas to use. I didn't think much of it at the time, but that did come up later to haunt me (somewhat). The board was really well done, with hills, crevasses, and areas that had modelled-in difficult rock piles. The prior game had used ruined buildings and a tower, and we chose to leave those alone.

We rolled up Mission (Annihilation) and Deployment (Dawn of War), and DZ won the roll to deploy and go first. He chose to only deploy his Nob Warbiker unit, as far forward as possible, on the center hill.

I chose to deploy nothing. I also passed on attempting to Seize the Initiative.. so Barnabas gets first turn.

Ork Turn 1-

DZ brings on everything in the army. The 2 Battlewagons flank the 2 Trukks.. Big Mek in one of the trukks ensuring that the KFF covers all vehicles. The 2 Loota squads come in, in the corners, and the one in the NE makes it into cover... whereas the squad in the NW doesn't quite make it.

No shooting, as there is nothing to shoot AT yet.. although I am sure the Ork Boyz were firing into the air from sheer high spirits..

A tactical mistake on DZ's plan here.. he forgot to move the Nob Bikers.. left them in the middle of the hill. He also didn't realize that until middle of the following turn.. and.. to be honest here, I didn't realize it until after I had moved onto the board myself.

Space Wolf Turn 1 -

I am forced to leave one Drop Pod in reserves, but everything else moves onto the field. My Grey Hunter Drop Pod I place over by the NW loota squad, attempting to whittle that dakka down fast.. but it is not to be, as I drift 9 inches back, leaving me close to the Nob Bikers..

The 2 Rhino carrying Rune Priests come in, positioning themselves for great things.. and the LRC heads up to the edge of the hill slowly, bringing the TL Assault Cannons onto the Bikers. The Long Fangs attempt to get into cover by running towards a ruin, but, evidently the Heavy Weapons are reaaaaallly Heavy, and only run an inch.

Shooting -
The Rune Priests let loose.. the one next to the LRC has the JOTWW go off, targeted on the Nob Biker Painboy (actually the Biker BEHIND the Painboy, thanks to targeting rules).. leading to Barnabas' first experience with this power... and a "WTF??? You CAN'T be serious" reading of my codex.. Other bystanders commiserated with him. The Biker target gets sucked under, but the Painboy was able to jump the crack.. drat!

The other RP blasts some Living Lightning at the Bikers, as well as the LRC and the GH in the Pod all firing into them, with the net effect of 1 more biker dead, and wounds on 2 others.

Ork Turn 2 -

The Nob Bikers turn, and head down towards the Drop Podded GH, and the Ork Convoy turns to the west and strings out a bit. Both Loota squads decide to not move and get ready to fire.

Shooting - Between the NW Loota squad, the Big Shootas on the Battlewagon and Trukks, and the Nob Bikers, the GH lose 2 men. Not enough to make a Morale Check.. It also leads to MY first rules issue, in that DZ stated that his Dakka Guns on the Bikers were TL, and I (owning orks, but not bikers) thought that they were not. Taking a quick poll around the store, and someone was able to confirm that GW errated the listing.. so, I was in the wrong.. and the game went on after I apologized..

The NE Lootas can see a couple Long Fangs, and let fly.. downing 2 of the Missile Launchers..

Then Assault Happened. Pretty much the Nob Bikers live up to their reputation and wipe out the GH squad. I was able to pull down one Nob, and put a wound on the last one, so there are 3 wounded Nobs left, 2 with PK and the Painboy.. at the cost of a GH squad. The Nobs decide not to consolidate towards the Rhino..

Space Wolf turn 2 -

Rolling for the Drop Pod .. It gets here. Seeing that he has turned the land train to the side, and the KFF Mek is out in front, that leaves the rear Battlewagon vulnerable to some up close Melta fire.. I elect to plop the Pod 2 inches away from the blue Battlewagon.. and prompty scatter 9 inches back again! But hey.. them's the dice.

The Rhino moves up, and disgorges a Grey Hunter squad, while the RP stays inside the metal box. LRC moves up hill, and the other Rhino scootches back a bit and presents front to the Lootas in the NE. The Long Fangs can see the Mekboy's Trukk.. so hoist their weapons and sight in.

Shooting -
The Rune Priest alone in his Rhino summons Living Lighting, and has a single bolt earth itself nowhere near the Nob Bikers.. (rolled a 1, and a 1.. erg). This was the standard for this round. Every shot I made, I either wiffed OR failed to wound OR got saved by something. The Drop Pod Meltas both missed, the Long Fangs all were absorbed by the KFF, as was the LRC Assault cannon, and the MultiMelta just completely missed. The Grey Hunters that disembarked rapid fired into the Nobs, and managed to hit.. 3 times, and failed to wound. Lastly, the remaining Rune Priest tried to Living Lightning the NE corner Lootas, and came up with nothing. What disaster!

Ork Turn 3 -

The Blue Battlewagon pivots, and backs up a bit. Maybe 2 inches. The red Battlewagon, and the Mek's ride head towards the Drop Pod, and the Trukk containing the Warboss heads up the hill towards the tower and the LRC. The Nob Bikers adjust towards the Grey Hunters. Lootas do not move.

Shooting - the Lootas in the NE and the Blue BW's Big Shoota fire into the Drop Pod GH, killing 4. The NW Lootas fire at the lone Drop Pod, blowing off it's Storm Bolter. The Mek's Trukk Big Shoota and the Bikers TL Dakkaguns fire into the disembarked GH, killing 1. The Warboss's trukk fires it's Big Shoota into the Long Fangs, for no effect.

DZ forgets to fire ANY of the embarked Boyz in his open topped transports. He also forgets until well into the SW turn, to disembark those boyz in the trukks.

Assault -
The Nob Bikers plow into the Grey Hunters, and lose the Painboy and one Power Klaw, the remaining Klaw knocks the unit down to 4 models. We tie, and combat continues.

Space Wolf Turn 3 -

The Rhino toting the Rune Priest backs up an inch, as does the fully loaded Rhino, putting that on the edge of the board. The LRC stays put, while the Drop Pod GH advance towards the Blue BW.

Shooting -
The Long Fangs fire into the Warbosses trukk, destroying it with Lascannon fire. (as an aside, this is the ONLY time those Lascannons damage anything this game, and the rolls that I had for damaging the trukk were a 5 and a 6, so if they HAD been the missile launchers I costed them at, it would have still destroyed the trukk.) (minor point, but it still is bugging me that I made the mistake). 3 Boyz die in the explosion.

The LRC unloads will all weapons, (the MultiMelta trying to hit a Battlewagon, and missing thanks to the corrupted code on the Machine Spirit), while the Hurricane Bolters and Assault Cannon reduce the Warboss's group to Warboss, Nob, and 2 boyz. They make their LD check though.. bugger. The 2 Rune Priests both try to get some Living Lightning thru the KFF on the Mek's Trukk, but fail. The 2 Melta gunners in the Drop Pod GH squad manage to Immobilize and remove the Big Shoota from the Blue BW.

In assault, the Grey Hunters down the last of the Nob Bikers! (much rejoicing)... only to see oncoming ugliness in the form of the Red BW...

Ork Turn 4 -

There is a mightly WAAAAGH this turn...

The Mek's Trukk turns and trundles over the hill heading towards the rear Rhino, and the boyz and Mek jump out and get ready to assault the Rhino. The Blue BW Boyz pile out and get ready to whomp some humie Drop Podders. The Warboss and friends pile into the LRC. The Red BW rolls forward and thanks to the official Deffrolla FAQ, crumple the Drop Pod in the west like used tinfoil. The Boyz inside, pile out and move towards the grey Hunter 4-some.

Shooting - The Mek's Trukk and the Lootas in the NE combine to bring down 1 Long Fang. The Red BW boyz shoot into the GH 4 and kill 1 of them.. while their partner mob in the Blue BW manage to down 3 of the GH there.

Assaults - The Blue BW boyz run into the GH, and lose 4 boyz, and wipe out the GH.. then consolidate towards Tower Hill. The Red BW boyz multi-charge the Rhino and the GH in the west, and manage to kill the GH and wreck the Rhino, causing an explosion that fails to hurt anything. The Red BW boyz then consolidate around the Rune Priest, having enough boyz to make a ring still 2 inches away from the RP.. (nicely done, and arrrgh to boot!)The Big Mek and his boyz charge into the rear Rhino and manage to wreck it, and the GH inside manage to escape thru the side doors.. The Warboss shows his mightly muscles and penetrates the LRC! (and then rolls a 1 on the damage chart and we all laaaaauugh)..

(Was giggling so hard, I forgot to take a picture)

Space Wolf Turn 4 -

The Jaws Rune Priest and Grey Hunters ready themselves to attack the Big Mek and boyz. The LRC backs up 3 inches and disgorges the Blood Claws and Wolf Priest. The Warboss has a sinking feeling.. The Rune Priest alone in a shinking circle of Boyz, looks for escape, and finds none.

Shooting -
Both RP call Living Lightning again, each killing 4 of their opposing Boyz. Kinda neat. The Blood Claws unholster their pistols, and whittle the Warboss down to just himself. The Long Fangs attempt to blow up the Mek's Trukk, and fail. The LRC uses it's MM to accomplish that task, and sends it Kareening away from anything to explode in peace. The Assault Cannons attempt to hurt the Warboss, but he makes his Invul saves and takes no wounds.

Assault -
The Rune Priest all by his lonesome, decides to take the fight to the Orks and charges his surrounders... and takes one down as they clobber him. The surviving RP with the GH eliminate the Mek and his boyz, and consolidate ONE inch towards the hill. The Blood Claws manage to land 33 hits on the Warboss, and deal 8 wounds.. which he fails to survive! Woot! They then consolidate around the tower, towards the Ork Boyz heading their way.

dramatic shot..

Ork Turn 5 -

The Red Battlewagon, fresh from plowing the Drop Pod into the ground, pivots and declares a ram on the LRC.. turns out I managed to leave about 4 inches visible around the tower, and by george, the BW could make it.. and that darn thing managed to smoosh my LRC! 2 of my vehicles down for that BW... I am sure Barn will paint some sort of kill tally on it. The Boyz from the Red BW crest the hill, and the Blue BW boyz charge up the hill into the Blood Claws..

Shooting -
The Lootas both fire at the remaining Drop Pod, and take off it's Storm Bolter. In hindsight, they probably would have done better to shoot the Blood Claws up a bit before the Blue Boyz got there. The Boyz in Blue fire their shootas as they come, and eliminate 2 BC. The Red BW Big Shoota fires at the Long Fangs, and fails to do any damage. The Red BW Boyz fire into the oncoming Grey Hunters and reduce them to 5 models. LD check is a go.

Assault -
Well.. the Blue BW boyz get to the BC, and run right into counterattacking, rerolling misses ick. Pretty much they drop down to 3 models, thanks to the rerolls, the Wolf Priest's power attack, and my ability to shove all the 6's I should have rolled on turn 2 into this combat. The Nob and 2 boyz survive, and eliminate 2 of the Claws in return. However, they manage to make a natural 2, and the boyz stick around for another round of combat.

Space Wolf turn 5 -

The Blood Claws are tied up in combat, the Grey Hunter unit advances, and the Long Fangs stay still. Wait.. that is all I got left? Wow.

Shooting -
The Long Fangs attempt to get the Red BW with the Lascannons, but fail to penetrate. The Gey Hunters and Rune Priest try to kill the incoming Red BW boyz, but only manage to eliminate 4 of them. They fail their LD check, but the nob kills a boy and they make the re-roll.

Assault -
The Blood Claws eliminate the remainder of the Blue BW Boyz, and head around the tower, looking at a long 36 inch slog towards the Lootas..

As it is the end of turn 5.. we check and the game ENDS!

I am sure I got pasted.. I am down to 3 units and a damaged Drop Pod..

We total up the dead..

Jim gives up - LRC, Rhino, Rhino, Drop Pod, 3 units of Grey Hunters and a Rune Priest - 8 Kill Points
Barnabas gives up - Trukk, Trukk, Big Mek, Warboss, Nob Bikers, Trukk Boyz, Trukk Boyz, Blue BW Boyz - 8 Kill Points

A TIE!

Whoa.. I though for sure I was lost.. but the last 2 turns I managed to get some badly needed KP..

Well.. lessons learned.. Kill BW with Deathrollas (even if the DR are not visible).. Buy new dice.

Unit of the Match in my opinion,...
Space Wolves - Blood Claws with the Wolf Priest.. taking on Orks and kicking butt ..
Orks - Red Battlewagon with the boyz inside.. took out Drop Pod, Rhino, LRC, Rune Priest, and Grey Hunter squad.

Suboptimal Units-
SW- Long Fangs - never hit, underpaid their points.. basically wrecked a trukk that Barnabas was going to jump out of anyhow..
Orks - Lootas.. not good against power armor, and he just didn't roll well enough (but this is mostly luck)

Cool BattleReport, Jim!!!

Just one minor point of contention. I didn't forget to disembark until my shooting phase, sometime after I'd shot with some of my units (not into the SW's turn). Also, I don't believe I forgot to shoot with the Boyz in the Battlewagons.

At any rate, great Batrep. I also agree with your statement about the BW w/ Deffrolla being the MVP, while the Lootas kinda left me hanging dry, especially since they failed to eliminate any light armored vehicles, which is usually what they're good for. I should have kept shooting at your Missile squad in the back.

Great report and pics too!

@Darkzephyr I ran a similar list, but with my nob squad in a wagon instead of on bikes. As much as I loved having 2 squads of lootas pounding the enemy, I always found that they always got eaten up by flanking units, or had their LOS blocked by my own BW line.
Recently I cut them and starting running a transport spam list with 4 wagons with DRs and 3 supporting trucks. Been having a blast with it, as no opponent so far has been able to stop all of that metal!
So, just a thought for ya if you have that inkling that your lootas may be under performing

PS Jaws of the world wolf FTL!!!
