Hey all, I'm looking for some advice as far as what to purchase next. I'm trying to hit 1500 points to be eligible for a tournament and I'm definitely a bit new, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Here is my current list: (Basically AoBR + a few other things)

HQ
Captain - 100 points

Elites
Dreadnaught - Multi-Melta, Close Combat (w/ Storm Bolter) - 105 points
Terminators - Sarge w/ Powerfist - 200 points

Troops
Tactical Squad - 9 troops, Flamer, ML, Sarge w. close combat & Pistol - 170 points
Tactical Squad - 9 troops, PG, ML, Sarge w/ Pistol & PP - 195 points
Tactical Squad - 9 troops, Meltagun, ML, Sarge w. Close combat & Pistol - 175

Heavy Support
2x Predators - Autocannon, Lascannon Sponsons - 260 points

1205 total points.

The Predators and the bottom tac squad are still under construction, but the rest have been built, painted and glued (and I don't have a lot of bits.)

Pick up Rhinos, they are almost essential. You could also get Razorbacks and combat squad all your units. Either way mech up. Also, you should put your Dreadnought in a Pod, as its 12 inch range will do nothing as it's walking up the board which is crap because MM has a 12 inch kill range on vehicles.

You should also give your Captain some Hellfire Rounds at least, or kit him for combat with a Relic Blade or something.

Preds are solid, so that is good.

I understand what you trying to say but a Multi-melta has a 24" range while yes you don't get the 2d6 roll versus armour it is still Str 8 and AP1 (read +1 to damage roll) which is the real money maker

But as for the OP. I agree with Kaptaink about the Mechanization (Rhinos, Razorbacks, Land Raiders, and/or Drop Pod) pick which style you like and run with it.

Do I need anything fast? Speeders and the like?

start with transports before you think about speeder,3 rhinos and a land raider is my suggestion. also i suggest picking up a librarian, having some psychic defense is always good for an army, also null zone is awesome.

you also might consider bitz ordering different arms for the dread, to give him some ranged fire power, so he is more of a back field walking turret, this would also remove the need for the drop pod, but you can go with the drop pod and your current configuration, its all up to you.

once you have all that stuff get some MM/HF speeders, and MM attack bikes.

Um... There's a big problem with your list.

9 man squads are not allowed to have special or heavy weapons. You need the full 10 man contingent.

After that, invest in Rhinos, as has been said. Also, the Captain is gonna be all my himself in this list, currently. I'd say lose the Terminators and instead get a 5 man Sternguard Veteran Squad with all the fixins', and a Razorback with a either an assault cannon or the Plasmagun/Lascannon combo, if you're up to converting it. Give the Captain Hellfire Shells and have him be the 6th man with the Sternguard. This'll give you a very nicely concentrated Mechanized list, instad of where it is now, sort of spread out and all over the place.

The other option is to keep the Terminators, but upgrade the captain to a Terminator as well. Then, either find someway to fit a Land Raider in, (which will bring you nicely up into the 1500 point range, which is where you'll find more games then at 1205,) or give your three Tac Squads Teleport Homers and hold the Terminators in reserve. Then, on the turn they become available, deep strike them to the Tac Squad that needs the additional firepower the most. Since the Tac Squads have the Homers, the Termies won't scatter as long as you deploy them within 6 inches. Either way, you might want to look at getting a heavy weapon for the terminators. Go to The War Store or similar and bitz order a cyclone missile launcher. It pains me to see a terminator squad without a heavy weapon.

Finally, you can keep the dread as is. Just make sure you keep him near other vehicles. If you put him off by himself, he'll be a very lucrative target, and in a normal sized game, 24 inches is nice and all, but there are a lot of ranged weapons that can eat a Dreadnought from 36 inches and above. I'd really recommend you either give him the left side missile launcher, or swap the Multi-melta for something else. But only if you have the point. All the other changes I've outlined should take priority.

The 10th men are the sergeants, which according to my count makes 10 models.

Ahh. Okay. That makes more sense.

Eventually I'm going to convert or purchase enough to make the changes above, but I really don't want to start subbing out stuff I have now, mainly due to cost and time. I was thinking the librarian as an add before posting, and the transport idea makes sense. Adding 4 transports (3 Rhinos and a Drop Pod) takes me to just 155 points shy. Would it be worth the points to just trick out the transports? I like the idea of a taking a Land Raider, but there's no way I'm getting there under 1500.

Edit: just realized that adding the librarian with an epistolary would do it. Thanks!

if you are willing to take HBs on the preds, and drop a tactical squad you can easily get the land raider in at 1500.

and you dont really need 3 full tactical squads at 1500, 2 is plenty, they can end up being 4 scoring units which is plenty. that would also mean you only need to buy 2 rhinos a drop pod, and then the land raider.

That's definitely worth considering. Either way, my first steps are going to be the 2 rhinos, the pod and the librarian, then figure out things from there.
