Implacable Black Templar Initiate

Hello everyone. I've played 4 different 40k armies now and it's time I branched into yet a new army. This time it's Orks.
I have two ideas in mind. And they are both noncompetitive (at least if they actually are competitive I don't care that they are). My two ideas include:
Speed freeks. Everything on bikes or in a truk. Take some death copters (I'm not sure how to spell them, Orks spell worse than I do!) and have everything as moble as possible.
All dreads and killer kans. So everything is all armored and have nothing but.
As far as which I want to go with... I'm not sure. I've always wanted a speed freak army, I love the red and orange flame paint scheme. But the new ork walkers look fantastic too. Less models to paint and it would certainly look cool.
So tell me Dakka, what do YOU like in your warband? Do I need any specific special characters (such as to make dreads troops or the like)? What's cool? What's not?

Well, to take Dreads as troops choices, you'll need one big mek per Dread. This means that in regular games you'll usually only be able to field 2 Dreads as troops.

Deffkoptas are awesome, with being a fast choice, classed as jetbikes and the use of their scout ability they can get things going real quick for ya, plus they have enough options for various attack runs!
I've played 6 koptas in various games and have made a nice mess of the opposition.
The Codex states they can be in groups of one to five, which means... if ya could (or wanted to), that there could be 15 of these puppies on the field running amok!
They dont benifit from the Waagh! and are not stated like vehicles, but rather like other boyz. So keep that in mind when planning your tactics with em!
Enjoy!

Speed Freaks: gittin' ur ork boyz 'dere fasta, givin' dey get 'dere at all.
If you speed freak and like trukks, max the troop units and nobs and give them as many trukks as possible. Maybe some nobs on bikes wouldn't hurt either. All nobs leading boyz squads give 'em a boss pole and PK. Trukks usually don't need too much, maybe a reinforced ram and boarding planks.
A balanced approach would be to add some BWs in there; giving your vehicles more survivability. Throw in Lootas too for long ranged support.
Deffkoptas are usually used with Buzzsaws to scout and suicide a transport or side armor of a tank.
Kan Wall List: dread mobs are 'ead killy an' stompy' but dey slow as one legg'd grotz.
Take 2 Big Meks with KFF and make everything slog; meaning almost all your options are behind the Killa kans and Deff Dreads. You could split the list, as you use walkers for about 30-40% of your list and the rest are what you want.
Just keep in mind most of the time, your army will be running towards the enemy in order to engage.

Erm, do you have the Ork Codex?
The armies you've suggested are two of the three example forces in the book.
Buy it, read it, laugh at the ace writing, then loot some wagonz!

I'm running dreadbash right now, since I got the new kits and put together and painted 9 kans and 2 dreads with magnetized weapons in less than 2 weeks. Took 'em to a 1750 tourney and finished 2nd in battle points (out of 15) having only played the list once before. I didn't do "Kan Wall," where you march up with a crapload of shoota boyz behind the kans, it was Dread Bash, with all the kans/dreads plus battlewagons (from nobs), warbuggies, and kommandos. The new dreads/kans look awesome, so I'm in love with this army right now and still very much trying to learn the finesse of playing it correctly.

I am building 2 Dreads and 3 Kanz at the moment, with 3 more Kanz coming once the first are finished.
Now I am almost decided on which weaponry I want to put on them, but not entirely.
My first Dread will have either 4 close combat weapons, or 3 with one piece of other weaponry. Which weapon goes best with 3 close combat weapons? Skorcha? Rokkit Launcha? KMB? Those are the 3 I am considering. Maybe it doesn't really matter and I can choose whichever I like best?
My second dread will have two close combat weapons and two other weapons.
For the Kanz, I have one built with the Grotzooka already, and the other two don't have their weapon yet. One will probably get a Rokkit Launcha and the other a Big Shoota or a Skorcha.
A few questions:
- Is the KMB's higher AP worth it over the slightly cheaper Rokkits, or should I not even bother?
- Is the Big Shoota really as bad a choice for Kanz as some claim?
- In general, any particular pros and cons to take into account when it comes to arming the Dreads and Kanz?
All of this is for casual play only.

Dreads: Add a skorcha. No dice, just templately goodness.
KMB's 12" less range makes it sub-optimal versus the rokkit launcha.
Big Shoota: It's not a terrible addition, but with rokkit launchas and grotzookas, it is like the KMB in that it is a sub-optimal choice.
Pros:
Dreads are pure klose kombat aktshun. Shooty weapons are wasted due to BS 2. In turn, maximize your Kan's abilities with shooting. 9 Grotzookas is really fearsome. Get grotzookas if you can unless your list needs rokkits to shoot down transports and tanks.
Cons:
Kans are not too good with a WS of 2 in CC.
Walkers will die in bunches, especially the Kans due to Squadron rules.
Kan walls normally are walker lists and 'ergo will lose to armies expecting them. Balanced armies will fare worse as they won't have enough to stop all the vehicles the list theoretically can produce.

I use 2 skorchas on my dread. It has the potential to wipe out full squads of fire warriors.
Also, adding a wazdakka gutsmeck into your army lets you field whole armys on bikes. use him as hq, 3 nob bike squads for elite, 6 sqauds of bikes for troops, 3 more squads of bikes for fast attack, and then whatever heavy support you need for tanks. Very fun.

My codex says they are both the same range?

If you're going to end up with multiple squadrons of kans, I'd suggest keeping the weapons consistent within each squad. You're not specializing to (ab)use wound allocation, you're just potentially gimping yourself by only having one kan that can fire at [X] range forcing you to choose between running to get your other weapons into range and losing a rokkit shot, or firing one rokkit and delaying bringing your other weapons to bear.
