Sitting on the roof of my house with a shotgun, and a six pack of beers

Col Lynch sat in the shade of the old mission, the stones walls were baking hot but they offered the only escape to the unrelenting heat of the afternoon sun. The mission had once served as a beacon of light in the outlands, offering guidance and the love of the Immortal emperor to those who made their living far from civilisation. However those days were long past, the increase in raider activity along the southern trade routes had seen the caravans move North and the mission fall into disuse. Since those glory days it had been used for less auspicious purposes, its thick stone walls serving as a bolt hole for rebels and bandits. The once pristine walls were pock marked with las rounds and ugly holes made by solid slugs. Lynch new for fact that gaping cracks in the east and west walls had been caused by his own regiment some two cycles ago in the persecution of a Local bandit Lord. Undoubtedly some New upstart of a “Bandit Lord” was responsible for the attempted repairs, but the mission was long past redemption as a fortification, time and the Jalvene 33rd had seen to that.

“How are you feeling Sir” the voice startled Lynch, two feet to his left Hondo had appeared from no where. Hondo was tall, dark man who was built like a grox. Slung across his back he carried a blade nearly as long as he was tall and a Mag-bow, a weapon native to Jalvene. His attire was similar to that of the 33rd but he had made numerous modifications over the years that the Col was willing to overlook considering his individual talents.

“Throne Damn you Hondo, you may be the best stealther in the whole regiment but if you sneak up on me again I’ll have you shot” replied the Col only half joking.

“Just doing my job sir” Hondo smiled. “Anyway how you feeling, this being your first outing since…………you know the red aquilla”

“I’m fine Hondo” replied Lynch removing his cap

“Sir, you were half dead when I found you” whispered Hondo as he knelt next to Lynch “you’ve had less than a month to recover, you sure you should be out here?”

“Should has nothing to do with it, I’m hear to ensure the emperor’s vengeance is brought down on those stinking Xeno Fraks who slaughtered my patrol” spat Lynch

“Good” Hondo grinned “because they’re here”

Hi All

This was a 500 point, Pitched Battle, Annihilation game between me (IG) and my gaming nemesis Moe_the_Orc (Orks). This is a bit of a grudge match as this is the fifth game we’ve played against each other and score was 2:2, and a lot of the fluffier parts on the report follow on from my previous one.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/277238.page

We played on a slightly smaller than Standard table being 4 foot by 5 foot, however it was the largest we’ve played on at this point. The armies were as follows:

Moe_the_Orc
Big Mek, PowerKlaw, Skorcha combi shoota

15 Shoota boyz, 1 big Shoota, Nob with huge choppa and boss pole

15 Slugga Boyz, Nob with boss pole and Power Klaw

12 Kommandos, 2x Burners, Nob with Boss pole and PowerKlaw

Col Lynch and Jalvene 33rd (SpankHammer III)
CCS, Mortar, Regimental Standard

PCS, Mortar, 2x flamer

2x Inf squad with Grenade Launcher and AC (combined)

2x Vets with 3x GL and AC

Hondo (counts as Marbo)

I won the roll off and decided to go first.

Deployment was a little like this, apologies for the rubbish picture (I really need to get a digital camera or vassal) needless to say this picture isn’t that accurate but it’s to give you a rough idea of what I’m talking about.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/92988-.html?m=2

The Brown Circles and squares are areas of terrain/craters which we gave 5+ saves. The black blobs were wrecked vehicle (a hellhound and basilisk). The big white square is the ruined mission with a 4+ save. The red rectangle was an Armour 10 2 story building.

Guard Deployment
From left to right my deployment was as follows. My blob hid in the ruins on the left with the two Ac’s on the first floor, out of sight behind them I put the CCS, then I deployed one of my vet squads in a crater in the middle of my deployment zone. The last vet squad I deployed behind a waste high wall on the right and positioned my PCS behind them. Hondo (Marbo) started in reserve

Ork Deployment
From my left to right, the slugga boyz deployed as far forward as they could in the open just in front of a 4+ cover difficult terrain, the commando infiltrated right behind the two stories building dominating the middle of the map, the big Mek joined the shoota boyz behind two wrecked building in the top right quarter

Turn 1
“Get those guns in position, throne damn you” screamed Lynch, looking over his shoulder he saw the horde was on the move “damn its too late” Moe then stole the initiative and the game started.

Orks
Stealing the initiative sort of worked against Moe in this first movement phase as two of his squad effectively moved side ways to get past the cover he had hidden behind. The Shoota edged around the wrecked vehicle and forwards toward the vets behind the wall and then let off a shot with the big shoota them. The shot peppered the wall but failed to find their mark.

The Kommado’s edged around the building to left and then ran 6” into the 4+ cover, unfortunately even with the run less than half made it in to cover.

The Sluggaz bellowed itching for a fight and steamroller forwards moving a total of 8” with the front rank just reaching the area of cover.

Jalvene 33rd
“Stand your ground men” Lynch Shout down the line
The Jalvene 33rd didn’t flinch and opened up on the on rushing orks.
“ordered fire on those Kommandos” Lynch bellowed at the AC vets in the crater to his right “First rank Fire! Second Rank Fire”The Vets in the crater showered the commando with Grenades, AC rounds and Las dropping 7 of the fowl xenos
The Vets on the far right also fire at the kommandos killing another 3.
The Inf Blob, CCS and PCS all fires at the sluggas, but even with all the Mortar, Las and ACs rounds only manage to drop 3.
The Kommando panic “where ya goin ya git” the Nob Kommando Yellz “no onez leaven till I say so” and to punctuate his point he smashes his boss pole into his remaining boyz head, stoving in his skull and dropping him to the floor in a pool of ichor.
Turn 2

Orks
A deafening noise rumbles across the battlefield as all the Orks, as if with one unified and terrify voice, roar “WWAAAAAGGGGHHH”

The Lone Kommando Nob seeking vengeance for his boyz or driven by pure blood lust runs straight in the vets in Crater. The Slugga Boyz Not wanting to miss a good scrap also pile in.
“Bayonets” the sergeant screams, but its to late, half his men have barley enough time to draw their knives before the crater is filled with mad cackling orks.
In the whirl of combat that follows the vets manage to drop two of the sluggas, the Kommando rips the AC gunners and a pair of Las gunners apart with his power klaw and the rest of the squad are butchered by the sluggas. The commando breaks right and heads for the other vets while the slugga move toward the CCS hiding behind the mission.

One:Nil to the Orks

The Shootas are still trying to get around the wrecked tanks but fire another burst from the big shoota, punching one of the wall vets off his feet as the round rips through his flak armor.

Jalvene 33rd
“The warp takes those green skins” Lynch curses “where’s Hondo” Just behind the charging slugga boyz the sand starts to move slowly at first and then erupting as Hondo leaps from beneath very dessert itself. The PCS orders the right hand vets to frfsrf on Nob Kommando, who shred him with multiple Grenade hits.

One:One

The PCS and PC then both fire on the shoota boyz who still struggling with the wrecked vehicle and manage to kill one.
Unfortunately the Mission is blocking Los to sluggas for most of the Blob and the few shots they do get are ineffective.
Hondo hurls his Demo chare into the Sluggaz and kills five, moe removed the five closest to Hondo so he was unable to assault the rest.

Turn 3

Orks
The Shoota continue forward towards the right hand (wall) vets and fire another burst but Ork BS being what it is miss.
The Sluggaz ignore Hondo and rush into the CCS instead. The Sluggaz and CCS collide in tidal wave of choppas, knives, fist and rifle butts. The Slugga slaughter the mortar team but lose tow of their number in return and the Nob looses a wound to bayonet in the chest. (I got uber jammy here, I had to get 3 fives and did) With the standard the orks lose by two, they fail and the boss pole drops the reaming boy but the nob stand their ground.

Jalvene 33rd
“Time to relocate boys” the sergeant of the infantry blob shouts.
The Infantry squad try to get out of the front of ruin in order to either open up on the shootaz when they get in view or to pile into the remaining sluggas, but with the AC’s on the first floor it’s a slow process.
Hondo Moves with all speed towards the melee between the sluggaz and the CCS but even running he is to far away to assault.
The vets on the Right open up on the Shootaz again but only manage to kill 3 of them.
The PCS drop another mortar round into the shootaz and manage to kill 2 (I was happily surprised).
“For the emperor” Lynch roars as he thrusts his chain sword into the Nobs open maw, sending pieces of flesh and teeth flying. Stepping over the still quivers corpse Lynch and His squad move in the direction of the shootaz.
1:2 to the Jalvene 33rd

Turn 4

Orks
The Shootaz continue towards the right hand vets and again firing a volley as they move. This time with the aid of Gork (or Mork) they mange to kill 2 more of the vets, but the vets hold fast.

Jalvene 33rd
“Forward men, for Golden throne and the Imperium, Run, Run, RUN!”Lynch order the Inf blob to run so they can get set up properly for turn 5 but they must have not cleaned out their ears as the order is failed, however they still manage to run 6” and at last are all out of the ruin.
The CCS also tries to RRR and pass and move 5” towards the right hand vets and the on rushing shootaz
Hondo also runs but only move and additional 2” (doh).
The Vets 1 shoota and so does the PCS. The Orks roll a break test and fail the boss pole keeps them in it though, they then roll for pinning and fail. The Boss pole is strikes down another boy but they remnants of the squad are too confused and go to ground.

At this point Moe had a his Big Mek and 5 shootaz pinned about 8” away from my remaining vets and PCS, with the CCS and Hondo moving towards their left flank and blob lining up fire on them as well, so rather than undergo another round he forfeits.

2-1 victory to the guard

The Ork Big Mek looks around him at the remnants of his horde, and with a succession of guttural curses runs from the field.
All the men of the Jalvene 33rd cheer, except Col Lynch who just scowls at the fleeing Big Mek.
“what wrong sir?” Lt Pickett asks “we won” Lynch turns to the young lieutenant and gives him a sad smile.
“that we did, but they’ll be back” As the Lieutenant walked away Hondo appears at Lynch's side
“what did I tell you about sneaking up on me?”
“Sorry sir” Hondo replied, then looking his commander in the face he said “what you told the Pickett, that not the real reason your pissed”
“no, its not” sighed Lynch “he wasn’t here”
“who?”
“the Warboss that killed Neb”

Analysis
Hooray victory for the Imperium, after loosing the last two battles to Moe I needed a victory. I think we both surprised each other with our lists, he normally brings 8 Lootaz which is why I brought the mortars. I hoping to pin them and then focus the rest of my guns on his boys and Moe thought I bring either my sentinels or my Hell hound so brought a lot of power klaws. He hadn’t expected and all infantry list. The only thing I would have done different were reposition my Blob so they could do more the ruin just ended up blocking los. Also I would have swapped the positions of my of PCS and CCS, that way I might of been able to flame his Sluggaz and avoided and assault altogether.
I think by stealing the initiative Moe shot himself in the foot, he had set up most of his squads in hiding so that my first round of shooting did nothing, but stealing the initiative he effectively had to waste movement by going sideways and effectively gave me and extra round of shooting. Also I think he should have out flanked with his Kommandos.
This was the first Game I used Marbo and he was awesome, although I didn’t get him to assault which was disappointing. My squad of the match has to go the vets who died in the crater though, they shredded the Kommando and managed to take out a few of the sluggaz before being killed. They will entered in the book of honoured dead for sure.

Well that it thanks for taking time to read and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed playing and writing it. Once again sorry for no pictures.

Thanks for the post. Sorry about the lack of pictures, i've just never got around to getting a digital camera. I'll try to borrow one for the next game.

Nice little report, mate. I remember your first one fondly (although I'm still disappointed that you let that watering hole fall into the hands of the green filth) so when I saw the Jalvene 33rd make their re-appearance, I was over the moon!

A digital camera would be nice for the next one, but not essential. To be honest I think a lot of people prefer vessel sometimes unless you take a LOT of time with the pictures. So many people post them with crap lighting, or low-res camera so you can barely make anything out anyway.

Still, nice to see you eradicated the opposition this time. Your opponent made a good move against Marbo/Hondo, frustrating, isn't it?

Thanks a lot.

I have to admit I do like the vassal reports i've seen becasue they give a clear overview. I'll try and come up with something.

Hell yes it was, first time I've used him, I really wanted to see what he could do in CC and he never gets a chance. I should have him appeared in front of them, that way he could have demo'd them and if he removed the closest ones he would have been further away from my CCS.

Yeah, you can put him anywhere as lon as it's 1" clear from an enemy model. So you could sit him right next an enemy squad then throw our charge, bit there's always the chance a bad scatter will blow you to pieces along with your enemy, hahah.
