So, I'm terribly confused. what does the Advanced Stabilization System do for Tau now that we're in 5th edition?

Jetpack units have relentless, doesn't this supersede the old rule about not being able to fire heavy weapons?

Also, if the ASS is the Advanced Stabilization system, what is a BASS?

No, because a) the codex rule specifically states they cannot fire heavy weapons, and b) Broadsides dont have jet packs.

ASS is good for broads sides as they haven't got jetpacks.

No idea what BASS is.

Pretty much this. ASS is useful because, as noted, Broadsides are NOT Jet Pack Infantry.

So basically all the relentless does that they didn't already have is that markerlight drones in XV8 units can now move and fire. Yes?

Just remember to move 6" and then activate it.

Also, note that Crisis suits cannot fire heavy weapons because the rules in the codex override those in the rulebook. This is not the case for stealth suits who can fire heavy weapons on the move.

The argument for "activating" ASS after moving 6" is screwed up from all the versions I have heard. The thing gives you slow and purposeful - it does not allow you to move twice in a movement phase. Also, there is nothing that says you "Activate it".

I believe it says: At any time in the movement phase, 'this' can become slow and purposeful, if it does, its allowed to fire heavy weapons this turn even if it moved.

Meaning, you move 6, then make it slow and purposeful and then shoot your rail guns.

Actually, XV8 Crisis Suits cannot move and shoot heavy weapons because they don't have access to any heavy weapons

Tau Codex wrote:During the Movement phase, the battlesuit may choose to use the Slow and Purposeful universal special rule for the remainder of the turn, though if it does it may not make an additional jetpack move in the Assault phase

Rule Book wrote:Models with this special rule are relentless(see above). However, they always count as moving through difficult terrain(including in assaults).

Saying that you are using the wargear changes how you actually move. If you use the wargear you move 2D6 and take the highest inches. If you do not you move 6". Moving then saying I'm using ASS seems to be a logical violation to me. Then again the argument could be made for RaW that you can declare what wargear is being used whenever you wish. By RaI it is a clear violation since Slow and purposeful replaces your normal movement (6") in the movement phase with move through cover (2D6 and take highest inches).

Stop it with the RaI. RaI = RaW, because the Authors did not unintentionally write a codex. RaW AND RaI you are allowed to move, then declare ASS.

If it was a genuine error, they would have released an errata.

During, not at the beginning of the movement phase.

Meaning it can be used whenever during the movement phase.

By moving 6" you are disregarding the move through cover requirement of Slow and Purposeful. Therefore you are indirectly stating that you are not going to use the wargear.

RaI = Rules as Interpreted. This is how it is interpreted to me.

Gwar wrote:If it was a genuine error, they would have released an errata.

They don't do errata for things that actually matter - they do FAQs which aren't RaW anyways.

Well sorry but I don't play RaIbR. (rules as interpreted by Rogueeyes)

I play RAW. And RAW says you're wrong.

Back to this part of the question. Only the XV8 models give the limitation of not firing heavy weapons while moving so any Marker Drones attached to an XV8 squad can still move and fire since they're classified as Jump Infantry(Jump Pack) units which have the Relentless rule.

Yes. Drones take on the characteristics of the unit they are attached to. A drone attached to a Stealth suit gains Stealth.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Stealth suits do not have the stealth ability.

Without hijacking the thread I just wanted to wondered which heavy weapons can crisis suits take because I have the codex here and I can't see any.

Runnin up on ya.

@ Melchiour, they do not get the stealth USR; however, they do have a Tau equivalent in the "stealth field generator".

@4M2A, crisis suits have absolutely no access to heavy weapons. The only usage for an XV8 would be to take it and a couple of marker drones (which I would discourage highly) so that the drones could move and shoot. Primarily the ASS is for broadsides so they are able to move and shoot their railguns or SMS.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do
