I'm drunk/bored/high/some other psychologically altered state...
What is the best Magic item in fantasy..
In each separate category:
Arcane Items: Cupped Hands of the Old Ones: Because some times a double 1 can mean a 1 fingered salute to one of your opponent's wizards.
Magic Weapons: Blade of Reality: Because a Melee attack can mean a 1 fingered salute period!
I really don't know anymore, plus I can't find my Lizardmen book right now. Can any one contribute? I'd like to try and make this a tier listing for items.

Infernal Puppet FTW!!
Combined with The Black Tongue, it can for example decimate a VC army very smooth and fast, and is also good for protecting your own wizards from miscasts.
Otherwise I like Chaos Runesword.
Though the funniest combo i've tried is Armour of Damnation + Father of Blades. Why are you hitting yourself, Karl Franz?

The Tenderizer. Simple, yet oh-so effective. Who can say no to causing d3 wounds on your 6 s7 attacks?

Icon of the Sacred Eye. +1 to hit against everything on the charge is smexy.
My favorite item of all time has got to be the super old 3rd ed Black Gem of Gnar. 4+ wardsave that rebounds a wound.
Also, Van Horstmans Speculum has been a super item staple for years now. It still wins games.

The most useful, IMHO, is the rending sword. Great on a Mage for some RAW abuse, great for challenges. 4 ws7 rerollable wounds at str 5 for 140pts isn't bad. (if place on a naked exalted)

Can I build a dwarf item for this? 'Cause I'm pretty fond of the MR of Steel, Rune of Stone, Rune of Resistance combo. And that's technically a single magic item. Barring armor piercing, or armor ignoring (aetherswords and such), nothing is wounding on better than a 4+, and he's saving those on a 3+ re-rollable. Pretty sweet protection...

Weapon: For its cost, I have to say Martog's Best Basha comes out on top. +1 Weapon Skill, Strength, and Initiative for 15pts (or 5pts each). It can arguably mean +1 to hit, +1 to wound, and going first in second rounds.
Talisman: Pendant of (forget the name), the Dark Elf Ward Save < Strength of Attack item. It's cheap even for being a - usually at worst - 4+ Ward Save equivalent, and makes up its points against pretty much anyone who's constantly putting out S4 or stronger models.
All I can really think of right now, but then I don't check a lot of the magic item lists constantly.

My favourite armour so far is the Nightshroud in Vampire Counts.
Light armour, attacker's do not get charge bonuses, attackers do not strike first when charging the wearer, attackers do not benefit from the ASF rule. Attackers reduce their initiative to 1 when in base contact with the wearer

Pendant of Khaeleth is probably the most obvious contender here. It's so stupid good, I've yet to see a DE not take it.
@Ragnar4: You're thinking of the Obsidian Amulet. The Black Gem took the model using it and one character in BTB (or in a challenge, I forget) out of the game unless a 6 was rolled at some point in a turn. Great for taking out bloodthirsters with a unit champion

Third for the Pendant of Khaelth. It's hard to argue with an inverse (roll under) Ward save equal to the Stregth of the incoming attack! And it only costs as much as the typical 5+ Ward save talisman!
The Crimson Death is pretty mean too. Not terribly impressive against, say, The Tenderizer. It's a halberd (that means no shield!) that gives unmodifiable S6. No big deal, right?
In an army that doesn't have many S6 options, it is quite nice. Add in that it costs a mere 25 points - cheap enough to give to a champion, not just a character - makes it excellent!

Coolest: the cloak for high elves that teleports the wearer (3d6"?) in a random direction after suffering one wound. I think it's an awesome idea for a mage, but I haven't seen it taken yet...

Ring of Hotek? That's actually quite nice to hit magic heavy armies with.

Blood Statuette of Spite. I use this almost every time against any Elf army I'm up against. Have them burn their dispel dice and let 'er rip. Take a toughness test, if you fail take a wound with no save and another toughness test. I've taken down Teclis a couple times that way...classic.

Been thinking up a list. Here are a few: - Banehead - War Drums - Ring of Hotek - Pendant of Khalalslthshth - Golden Eye of Tizz - Bloodskull Pendant - Rapturous Standard - Bloodcurdling Roar - Goblin armor-swap item - Goblin no-ward-saves item - Goblin bomb vest item - Van Horstman's Speculum - Casket of That One Guy - Fellblade - Banner of the Under Empire - Skullmantle - Gutmaw - Gnarled Hide - Helm of Commandment - Virtue of Heroism With a few glaring exceptions, these are also some of the best value for the points items too ... - Salvage
