If I have an IC character with deep strike join a squad of legion of the damned can they still use their deep-strike re-roll, and can they still use the re-roll when using gateway of infinity.

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake.

I would say No and No.

No to 1 as the IC is not a Legion of the Damned, and No to 2 as Aid Unlooked for seems to me to be worded as such that you can only re-roll the initial Deep Strike Scatter dice.

Under the couch

There is nothing that says that the re-roll is lost if the unit is joined by an IC, so yes, they'll still get it.

GoI is a thornier subject... Some players feel that since the Gate uses the Deep Strike rules, it counts as Deep Striking. So the re-roll would apply.

Others think that due to the wording (stating that the unit is placed using the deep strike rules, rather than that the unit Deep Strikes) the Gate does not actually count as a Deep Strike... so the re-roll would not apply.

I go with the first one, personally.

Very sticky subject possibly IMO. The rules say that IC joining a unit would lose a special rule if the unit didn't have it. Since the IC and unit both have deep strike, then possibly the ability to re-roll would be lost.

I would say that the IC and a unit of LotD would all get to reroll their initial deep strike onto the table.

As for GoI, thats a tough one. Just because a rule doesn't say that something is not allowed, doesn't meant that you can still do it (using the letter of the law to defeat the spirit of the law so to speak).

I would agree with Gwar on using GoI. Rerolling the scatter once when they arrive would be fine, but rerolling each use of GoI would be a bit wrong IMO.

If I give you a cookie, will you go away? If I give you the bag, will you go far, far away?

I believed that an IC doesn't get the Special Abilities of the unit, so he would stop them from re-rolling. Otherwise you could put an IC in a unit that infiltrates, and infiltrate them all.

Well, "Aid unlooked for" is not a USR, and only USR are talked about when it comes to gaining or losing the ability. Something I realized is that if they lose the ability to re-roll then the entire rule would be scrapped (unless you can pick and choose which parts of a special rule to use) and that they would not be forced to start the game in reserve, in which case you could deploy them normally

Others think that due to the wording (stating that the unit is placed using the deep strike rules, rather than that the unit Deep Strikes) the Gate does not actually count as a Deep Strike... so the re-roll would not apply.

Well if it is not a deep strike would they then be able to assault after?

Entering play via deep strike and entering play using the deep strike rules are two different things.

It is like units that move 'as if they are jump infantry' and units that are jump infantry.

Is this true? I am looking at daemonhosts...and they are summoned..."using deep strike rules"

I do not own a DH codex so you will have to clarify exactly what you mean by this, is this for the teleport they can do?

Nevermind...Daemonhosts do say they enter by deepstrike...however Grey Knights use something called a Teleport Attack...it says "they can use the deep strike rules"
