Hey fellow dakkaites,
I was just wondering, how do people here deal with losing? I'm not referring to losing the odd game here or there, that happens to all of us. Has anybody here has a miserable streak where no matter what you field, you just can't seem to pull out a W or even a D? Also, whats the best winning streak you might have had?
I had a period of time where my tyranids were golden against all MEQ's and Xenos. Unfortunately IG has always been a thorn in my claw. Well here lately I have been experimenting with all of the new tasty units in the 5th Ed. codex for tyranids, and my w/l ratio has tipped severely. Should i be concerned about my generalship, or is this normal with a new codex release?
note: I should mention i started playing 40k in July 2009, and tyranids in september 09 so i'm still relatively new to the game.

Sometimes you just have to adjust your lists and units you play vs. certain opponents, unless you always play the same list.

I would think that it is no real big deal, sometimes with new stuff you kind of got to give it good adjusting time, and keep refining your game and lists into something that you can win with.

40k is too poorly written a game to worry about balance issues. The writers and 'testers' sure as hell don't. So just focus on making your games entertaining. I'm generally a very competetive player, but I've had to come to accept this fact. 40k just isn't a very good game from a design standpoint.
It's great fun when you're with fun people and using fun army lists, but don't expect much else.

second this. . . if you're having a losing streak start playing the fun lists and games, it works

Thanks guys for the input.
I have a regular opponent who has never purchased a single model for 40k, he always uses my space marines. That doesn't bother me, since i love my tyranids, but he has the terrible habit of counter-building. He will always make his list second, for various reasons "i have to use the bathroom' 'i'll set up the table' etc, etc. when he does get around to army builder, i notice he either looks to see if i've left my list up on the computer, or he'll watch as i get my models onto a try. Miraculously, he will always seem to have the best counter-units to what i have on the table from my collection. funny, eh? Then I have to counter-build against his lists, if i can, to get a win and reset the whole cycle, but i hate doing that. I like bringing fun lists with cool models, but like others have said i guess that is just not the way to consistently win 40k.
ps - space wolves can be beaten. It's just very very tough to do it.

Have yet to get mine ready for battle yet and will doubtless prove that it actually very easy to beat SW's
I like bringing fun lists with cool models,
there ya go mate, sounds good to me!
Also sounds like you need to insist that he makes an army list before setting up.
Fielding an army as described above removes the fog of war and winning that way is hollow.
Don't know how you can love those bugs! Man, they give me the creeps!

He's being a poor sport here, tetris. If he's a real friend, he'll stop it if you confront him.
Hide your lists better. Print them out and put them in your sock drawer. He should have no business ever going in there. Also, insist that he complete his list before you pull out any models or show him your list. Stick to your guns, man.
Teaching him a lesson would be nice. Build your army list. Print it. Hide the list.
Make a second list that is not similar at all. Leave that one up, but turn off your monitor or something. Leave out one model that is on the fake list, but not on your real list. Like some gargoyles.
Then, when he has made his list, tell him to put it on the table. Pull out your hidden list. Do NOT let him change his list after seeing your hidden list. If he insists that he made a mistake and wants to change his list, refuse to play him. He has to learn this lesson.
Seriously, YOU have to stand up for yourself. What he is doing is blatant cheating. Real friends don't treat each other this way.
Welcome to the hobby, by the way!

Your friend is indeed cheating as he builds his whole list after yours and just to beat you. Don't build your lists at the same time. Have you list already done but no models on the table. Let him build his list and play that with only minor changes allowed. He only wants to win which is ruining the game for you. You may want to start gaming at a store and get some new gaming partners. When I game against someone for the first time is just ask what army they have and guess at the points value what they will field.

Oh c'mon you are using a brand new codex that re-shaped your army, you have at least 20-30 games worth of "in testing mode".
Keep playing and trying new stuff, have fun with your army try radical changes in it or something.

Keep playing.
I had a run of losses last year that didn't end until this year (in my games club).
Given that my usual clubmates play skittles marines (in that they can't decide if they are CSM, DA, Vanilla, SW, BT or BA more than one game in a row).
They constantly seek out the new shiny (as opposed to refining what they have).

Tried reading your post about losing and, then I reached the point where you said this regular guy you play with just borrows his figs? He's not yet bought any figures and he does this 'counter-building' sleigh of hand.
What I consider a friend and a worthy opponent, is the one who has his own army and we go to the game area with our lists already made and no turning back, fun games are always done best with friends, since you don't feel bad about it.
You should also try to test build and see if some units mesh well with others and please play with people who has armies already, that way respect is mutual.
