Subject: Tau Stealth suit abilities

Morning, afternoon, evening depending on where you are in the world.
My stepson has just started with Tau and had built up enough for a small battle last night against my eldar
My queries are with his stealth suits, which according to him can follow me around, then pop up and shoot.
but the main one was that my wraithguard were heading for his battle suit so he placed his stealth's directly in front on the guards (bases touching) and claimed I could not move or attack because the suits were still in stealth mode and can't be seen.
as we couldn't agree either that I could pass though or assault, or for that matter that he was correct the game finished.
would appreciate clarification
cheers

Read the Stealth Suit entry in the Tau Armory. Nothing that your stepson said was the truth.
They are harder to shoot at (a bit like night fighting, see the mission special rules) and they can always make an assault move (so they can move 6", shoot, and then move again in the assault phase another 6" without needing to go into an assault) however they *cannot* break the "you cannot move within 1"" rule unless they are initiating an assault.
He was correct that you couldnt move through the Stealth suits in order to reach the Crisis suits behind, as you cannot move through the space occupied by another model. If the stealth suits were at least 1" apart from each other you could, however, make an assault move through that gap, as during an assault move you CAN cmoe within 1" of an enemy model.

cheers for that
you will have to forgive my ignorance I'm getting into this because my kids are.
so the fact that the bases were touching were should have initiated an assault? even though the suits were in stealth?
and stealth does mean full invisibility then?

No, stealth makes them *harder* to shoot at, it does not make it impossible! (well, if you are too far away (36" i believe) you cannot shoot them, as I explain below)
If you read the Stealth suit entry, when you want to shoot at the unit with e.g. Bolters, you roll a number of D6 and multiply by a constant - that is how many Inches yo ucan "see". If the stealth suits are within this distance, and you are in normal range for your Bolters, you can shoot at them. If you roll lower than the range to the target you cannot fire at them or any other unit.
I would suggest reading the "Stealth Suit" entry in the Tau Empire Codex, it explains it all in there.
Secondly, his models can ONLY be in base to base by *declaring* he is assaulting you - this has to be done *before* making any measurements. If he is within 6" he can assault you (Beast and Cavalry have a different assault range, but he isnt this type so it IS 6"), if he is out of 6" he cannot.
If he wants to instead make the Jet Pack "Assault jump", where they move in the Assault phase *without* assaulting anything, then he cannot assault any unit and MUST obey the "cannot move within 1" of an enemy model" rule.
The suits are never "in Stealth", implying a mode than can be turned on and off. Stealth suits have the "make it harder to shoot me" effect permanently on, however if you want to assault them this has no effect - you assault as normal.*
*they have a line about "count as being in cover", which used to mean something in the 4th edition of the rulebook, however in 5th edition this has no functional effect. A common houserule means you make the opposing unit count as I1 when they assault you, in the same way as a unit making a Difficult Terrain check would be.

The only thing I can think of that even remotely sounds like this is Dawn of War (the video game).

stealth suits i believe just use the night fight rules for shooting at them. this has no effect during the assault phase. it certainly doesnt make them invisable.
though you can not assault the stealth team unless you attempted to shoot at them during the shooting phase, or didnt shoot anything at all.
noses comments could be interpreted the wrong way, a friendly unit can be in base to base with itself at any time even after using the jump pack movement in the assault phase. the 1" rule only applies to enemy models.

lixulana - which is why I stated "within 1" of an enemy model" at least once above.
In addition, they do NOT USE NIGHT FIGHT. Their rule is actually quite distinct to Night Fight, and if Night Fight is also in operation their rule takes advantage of this to make them even harder to spot.
