Subject: 1750 Ork Kan Wall Vs. Bjorn and his drinking buddies
|
 |
Stern Iron Priest with Thrall Bodyguard
|
So last night I had one of the most satisfying victories to date. I was facing an old adversary that seemed to elude me frequently after he had massacred my Wolves about 3 months ago. We decided on going with 1750 for our points this go 'round and it was going to be an uphill battle for me as I was trying a modified version of my 'Ard Boyz list against his Kan wall. The respective lists are as follows:
Orks
H.Q.
Big Mek 2x
Kustom Force Field
Troops
30 Boyz 2x
3x Rokkit Launchers, Nob with Power Klaw
Deff Dread 2x
Extra Close Combat Weapons
Fast Attack
3x Deffkoptas 2x
2x Power Klaws, Twin Linked Rokkits
Heavy Support
Killa Kans 3x
Grotzookas
Killa Kans 3x
Rokkits
Killa Kans 3x
Scorchas
(not sure if they had anything else and didn't know what the points for each were, next time I'll get a copy of his Army list.)
Space Wolves
H.Q.
Bjorn
Plasma Cannon -270
Rune Priest
Chooser of the Slain, Psychic Powers: Living Lightning, Tempests Wrath -110
Grey Knight Grand Master
Psycannon Bolts, Psychic Power: Hammer Hand, Terminator Retinue: 1 With Incinerator, 2 Standard -314
Elites
Wolf Guard 3x
1x Power Weapon , 2x Power Fists, Land Raider Crusader: Multi Melta, Extra Armor -379
Troops
2x Grey Hunters 5x
Flamer, Mark of the Wulfen, Razorback: Twin Linked Lascannon -165
Heavy Support
Vindicator 2x -230
Long Fangs 5x
4x Missile Launchers -115
Total: 1748
His list had previously been undefeated in our gaming group for as long as I can remember and he boasted CONSTANTLY...(rather annoying I must say, additionally, he threw in the fact that he had never previously lost more than a handful of Kans with all of those games) I figured I'd try again and not take the fight to him...well not at first.
We ended up wit Pitched Battle, Annihilation and both of us grinned smugly...this was the perfect game for me and well...he was confident that he would make it across the field safely. We rolled for deployment and he ended up with a 1 to my 2...a sign of things to come.
At this point a third party set up the terrain and was pretty fair about it. Most of the terrain was placed along the long board edges and went down the line in this fashion: Partial Aegis Defense Line, Tower of Some kind next to a ruined building and finally another partial Aegis. The remaining terrain consisted of two pieces of area terrain in the middle.
Deployment for him was rather straight forward...all 11 Walkers formed a wall in front of the Boyz (From Left to right it went 3 Scorcha Kans, Deff Dread, 3 Grotzooka Kans, Deff Dread, 3 Rokkit Kans). For me, I deployed my Long Fangs, attached with Guard with Power Weapon and Rune Priest. In front of that building, I deployed the Land Raider Crusader with the Grey Knights next to it so they could embark first turn. To the left of the Land Raider, the two Vindicators lined up with Bjorn being partially Obscured by the rightmost of the two. The Razorbacks deployed behind the Vindicators so that only their turrets were showing.
At this point he rolled to seize the initiative and failed...Now for the fun part!
First Turn
I embark the Grey Knights in the Land Raider Crusader and move forward 3 inches, I move the Vindicators forward 3 inches and shuffle the Lazorbacks to the left a little. Shooting sees an OBSCENE amount of Kustom Force Field Rolls. The Rune Priest opens up first with Living Lightning and the Long Fangs add on 2 Missile Launchers into the rightmost Deff Dread, the Priests passes the Psychic Test and rolls 6 shots with the Lightning. After all is said and done both Missiles hit, along with 4 Lightning shots...roll and come up with 4 Penetrating hits...subsequently ALL 4 Kustom Force Field saves pass. Land Raider Crusader crew takes in upon themselves to show up their older comrades and pour on the Assault Cannon and Multi Melta into the Deff Dread. After all is said and done, the Multi Melta gets through and causes the Deff Dread to blow up 3 inches catching 3 Boyz in the blast, they are subsequently vaporized. Bjorn tosses a Plasma Cannon shot at the right most Kan group and pops a Kan. The Vindicators both hit and did 2 Penetrating hits on the leftmost Deff Dread, 4 hits on his neighboring Killa Kans and catch 6 Boyz...they ALL make their saves. The Lascannon Razorbacks...well they were blocked by the Kustom Force field as well...
In his turn he chooses to move and run and the whole group moves up a total of 8 Inches. Some units rolled further for their runs; however, he wanted to keep everything near his Bid Meks.
Second Turn
I fall back 6 with the Vindicators and the Razorbacks shift to the left again to give them room while remaining leery of the board edges for incoming Deffkoptas. The Land Raider Breaks away from the main group and goes right 12 Inches to draw the Kans and Boyz to it.
Bjorn shuffles to the left as well to remain obscured by the Vindicators. This turn sees some lackluster shooting from most units save a few. The Lascannon Razorbacks end up shaking a Scorcha Kan while the Vindicators successfully do nothing (This is where I realize I have been rolling only a single D6 for armor Penetration...damnit). The Long Fangs and Rune Priest make me proud by punching through the Kustom Force field destroying 2 Killa Kans and taking 2 Weapons off of the Deff Dread. The Grey Knights disembark from the Land Raider Crusader and Fire their Incinerator at a Kan and catch 4 Boyz killing the Boyz and actually taking the Dreadnought Weapon off of the Kan. The Land Raider Pours on the fire with a Power of the Machine Spirit Assault Cannon spree and takes down another 3 Boyz. The Grey Knights assault the Kanz and (try to) bring the pain. Grand Master casts Hammer Hand Successfully, swings and in the end causes 1 Immobilized result and a crew stunned result...yey. The other Grey Knights...well they don't even get honorable mention.
He rolls for his Deff Koptas and they come in on my Left Flank. His turn sees everything move up again, he runs the Scorcha Kans, and Deff Dread up 8 inches, the Grotzooka Kan thats left runs forward 2", the boyz behind the wall run up a wopping 10". The boyz move up to ready their assault on the Grey Knights. In assault, the Boyz Pile in a most interesting way...17 are counted in Combat. Grand Master gets off Hammer Hand and Destroys the Kan, the Grey Knights wing away taking a VERY satisfying 6 Boyz. In return...he causes 18 Wounds...I make all but 2 saves! Power Klaw is not in Combat at this point thank fully. Orks Lose Combat by 6, end up losing 4 more Boyz.
Third Turn
I'm slightly disheartened at the loss of my Grey Knights; however, the Grand Master is doing me proud. The Land Raider Crusader goes hunting for more prey; sadly though he has nothing to shoot so he drives 12" towards the advancing wall. The Vindicators Shuffle and find some holes in the Kan Wall. Bjorn moves forward 6 inches as we wants to get his paws dirty. Lazorbacks shift to the left again and take aim at the Deffkoptas. Shooting sees nothing done to the Deffkoptas by the Lazorbacks, the left most Vindicator lands a shot in the Boyz and takes down 6 (yeah...that's right 115 points to kill 6 Boyz :-( ). The Right most Vindicator shakes the Deff Dread. The Long Fangs decide it is time to pour the fire on the Boyz as they bestow their faith in Bjorn's Combat Ability. The Long Fangs and Rune Priest take down another 8 boyz from combined Frag fire and Living Lightning. Bjorn starts running for the charge a little early and misses with his Plasma Cannons. Assault sees Bjorn charging the Skorcha Kans as they were the closest. Bjorn Epicly tears down 2 Kans and destroys the weapon on the other...no form of retaliation gets through. The Grand Master is all on his own and knows the end is near; however, he takes 6 boyz with him. In the attacks back we just did the Power Klaw as if that didn't kill him, the other 30 something attacks would, he takes 2 Power Klaw wounds and fails one. ( :-( Grey Knight Grand Masters need Eternal Warrior...BAD). They Consolidate towards the scrum.
His turn sees the Arrival of another Deffkopta group, they come on the side with the Land Raider Crusader :-), they move on 12. Moving sees everything walk up, and he decides to go straight to Assault. Deff Koptas move to the Left Most Vindicator while the Deff Dread joins in with the scrum. The Boyz leftover from the Grey Knight combat roar as they have no way of assaulting anything. The Deffkoptas Assault the Land Raider...don't know why...they couldn't hurt it. Bjorn Tears down the Last Killa Kan, and also Shakes the Deff Dread, the Deff Dread gets 2 Penetrating hits, Ward of the Primarch blocks one, the other causes and immobilized result after being rerolled from a destroyed result. The Deffkoptas destroy the Vindicator and the Killa Kan pouts from lack of stuff to punch.
Fourth Turn
This turn has the Wolves out for blood. Leftmost Lazorback pulls forward 6" and takes aim at the Deffkoptas, the Grey Hunters and Wolf Guard from the other Lazorback pile out and take aim at the Deffkoptas as well. The remaining Vindicator puts his back up against the wall and takes aim at the Boyz in front of him. Land Raider Crusader backs up 6 and Levels all weapons on the Deffkoptas. The Boyz were a tempting target; however, the Koptas could have tied up my Long Fangs in Assault and that was NOT what I wanted. Shooting sees the first round of the Long Fangs and Rune Priest doing nothing as all their shots bounce off the Force Field for the Killa Kan (poured all my fire into it so I could garner the kill point), Land Raider Crusader destroys the Deffkoptas completely, Vindicator manages to take down 4 more Boyz. Grey Hunters fire Bolt Pistols and Flamers into the Deffkoptas to no effect, the Lazorbacks are more effective and take down 1 Deffkopta. Assaults see the Grey Hunters multi charging the remaining Deffkoptas and Killa Kan. Bjorn continues his rampage taking another arm off of the Deff Dread, in return he loses his Close Combat Weapon. The Grey Hunters, being fueled by their need for revenge, are monstrous in combat. The Marked Grey hunter rolls a 6 for number of attacks, in the end he gets 2 rends that go on to penetrate resulting in a destroyed result. The rest of the unit swings into the Deffkopta and do nothing, the Deffkopta kills a single whiffs on his attacks while the Wolf Guard with Power Fist tears down the contraption in fury. The Grey Hunters Consolidate back to their vehicle.
At this point things are looking grim for the Orks as they have only a badly damaged Deff Dread left and two 3/4 Strength Boyz Squads on the table. The last group of Deffkoptas Arrives on the Land Raider side again and Turbo Boost into the building and take no casualties in doing so. Everything else goes straight into assault. The leftmost boys squad multi charges Bjorn, the Remaining Vindicator and the disembarked Grey Hunters. The other Boys Squad Assaults Bjorn as well. In the Bjorn Combat I decide to pour everything onto the Deff Dread...Bjorn rolls 3 attacks, with 3 hits and gets 3 6's...wish I had taken a picture it was so sweet. End up with an explodes result going out 4 inches taking 2 boys from the Left Most Squad and 6 boyz from the rightmost squad. When moving over to the Grey Hunters, they get the Counter Attack off and hit with 9 Regular attacks and 4 Mark of the Wulfen Attacks, taking down 4 more Boyz. The Nobz in base to base with Bjorn do nothing and roar in displeasure. The Boyz in contact with the Vindicators fail to do anything to the tank. He takes his fearless wounds and loses another 3 Boyz from the Left most unit and 3 more Boyz from the right most unit.
Fifth Turn
I see this is going to be settled by boots on ground so I disembark the Grey Hunters from the other Razorback. I go to shooting and pour all of the Long Fangs into the Deffkoptas only killing 1 after cover saves. The Land Raider Crusader crew adds on their firepower and destroys the last two Deffkoptas. At this point I begin to move towards my assault phase when my opponent concedes as he has no way of winning currently.
Result: 8 Kill Points to 3 Kill Points.
Overall it was pretty fun and in the end VERY satisfying to see all of the dead Kanz and Boyz littering the dead pile. I was very surprised by the efficiency of my list against his and I'll just chalk it up to the dice being with me in the game. Hope you all enjoyed the report!

Yeah, if your specialty is Close Combat, that list pretty much hoses you...Then again, with World Eaters, I'm sure you could have tossed some Berzerkers to feed the Kans for a bit or had Mark of Khorne Terminators deal with them. Heh...Tau heavy gaming groups...I remember when that name used to make me shudder at the thought of a possible 9 Rail Guns pointed at me.

Kan walls are cool armies, but really... I'm shocked he's so cocky. I wonder if your area boasts not too many good gamers or is he just 'that good'
His lack of mobility and real range puts him at a disadvantage to Lazorback lists. Koptas are nice, but I wonder why he didn't just deploy them on the field to harrass you.
Overall, nice report. Thanks for writing it!

To be honest, there are a few questions that this encounter and previous have left me with.
According to him, he has used similar lists in local Tournaments in South Carolina (namely Columbia as he lives about 45 minutes away) and pulled off near flawless victories so I'm not sure what to think. In terms of being good, on thing that he has massively going for him is that there are just so many bodies that he can throw down at one time. I saw a Lazorback list get chewed alive because each turn saw 50-70% of all hits being deflected by the Force Fields; additionally, with the Deffkoptas in Reserve outflanking it catches one off guard when you're concentrating all of your firepower upfront and out of nowhere you have 3 koptas with your side armor written all over them.
Hopefully I'll run into a few more noteworthy games as more often than not many of them are just washes with either people crying "Space Wolf Cheese" or throwing whatever they can proxy on the board that day...

The koptas showed up to the party late. For Kan Wall, it's very dependent on silencing big guns before they pop too many walkers.
I've also not seen much skorcha kan use, since the BS3 works wonders for 'zookas and rokkits, which would've helped a fair bit.
But overall not a bad list, seems fairly standard for Kan Wall.
TL-Plas/Las is pretty nasty against Ork armor because it forces us to take the cover saves more often... meaning more chances to fail and pop.

The biggest problem with the Kan wall list he fielded is obviously, the selection of weapons. I understand the new kits make it hard to get all one weapon type for your kans (i.e. 9 kans with 9 Grotzookas), it makes it difficult to field the army the way he should of. Those scorchas should not of been there (mostly on the Dreads). The kans could of benefitted from having all rokkit launchas or grotzookas, which could of been more compromising to your army.
It was a mistake for his koptas to have been in reserve. Aside from the landraider, everything else could of been susceptable to being popped by the kopta or tied down to kombat for a turn or two.
Otherwise, good for you in smashing his hed in. Poor orkies.

Yea I agree with WarOne here. He had really no reason to reserve them in this game. That's why I asked why he's such a hot shot.
I, too, was wondering about his skorchas, but it looks like he bought 3 kits and spread them out with like weapons (at least he put them in like groups lol...) Grotzookas and rokkits are all I'd put on them.

Yeah, in all honesty I have no idea what the thought process was when he put together the models and the list...If the list was all Rokkits I would have definitely rethought how to approach his overall attack.
He's challenged me for our next match up to pull out his foot list with around 180 Boyz...to be honest...I'm not really concerned...sure he'll probably take a similar set up with Rokkits in every group of Boyz, Power Klaw and Big Meks...
Interesting that you would both choose to keep the Deffkoptas on the field from the start. Do you all usually Infiltrate and use the Scout move to get close up or how do you use them? I may drop the hint to him and see if it helps him at all.
Appreciate the feedback on the report also, I'll try and get pictures for you folks next time.

Depends on the scenario, but in my opinion, Deffkoptas are used best to take fire away from the main force by scout + turbo-boost to a flank and make them either chance losing tanks or tying up shootysquads while orks advance unharmed--or waste a turn firing at them instead =p
They did their job in his list only because your first volleys of fire were so nulled by the KFF. That won't always happen. It is only a 4+.

I see, I'll pass it along to him.
Yeah, I personally think he depends on the Kustom Force Field way too much...I wonder if he's ever faced an Imperial Guard Army that has A Colossus or two...those would ruin his day as they would just annihilate his Boyz and probably take out his Big Meks, once that is done, the rest of the army pretty much has free reign.

Very nice report. I like both lists but I've seen the GK chapter master with retinue around. Is it just a very good unit or is it a relatively nice unit with badassery attached to it ?

Hey Nice batrep, my regular opponent has taken to throwing down a lot of walkers, which i have to say seem quite overrated. My Trygon and Hive tyrant love ripping them to shreds!! I was just wondering if you were destroying kans that got immobilised? You mentioned that you immobilised a kan but it should be destroyed using the vehicle squadron rules. Also you said some boyz ran 10", i assume that was taking inot account the movement phase? Sorry if i sound like i'm nitpicking, 'cos im not, honest! Thanks for the batrep edit: I thought you said you immobilised a kan, maybe not, oh well

@Vitruvian: We were knocking over the immobilized Kans, just figured it was a given that the immobilized Kans were destroyed. Additionally, the Boyz running 10" was 6" move+run...I was just being lazy to be honest.
@Lethargic Ulfur Grey Knight Terminators bring a whole new sense of badassery to the table when used appropriately. Strength 6 Power Weapons on a Weapon Skill 5 Model? Yes please! Also, they have awesomesauce in the form of several pieces of wargear. I.e. Unlimited Range Psychic Hoods, Force Weapons that ignore Eternal Warrior, Psychic Powers that make them Strength 8 striking at Initiative 5. In all honesty, the Terminators really are the only saving grace for the Grey Knights from the Daemonhunters Codex. And compared to our Wolf Guard you get far more back for your buck in my opinion.

I'm surprised people just haven't realized the potential of a Walking Predator that can hit anything in Close Combat on 3+, has BS of 6, can allow you to re-roll who starts the game, and even in death serve Russ by becoming an objective...never seen someone so useful when they are dead...
